i think you better not give him any kind of junk food .i am on a diet too. whatever i earn online i just used them to buy healthy foods. though i would like to save the money i have earned online to buy gadgets and other things but i feel that health is more important to me. so i buy lots of fruits. like i buy a bottle of freshly squeezed oranges worth $7 per liter. it is quite expensive. i buy that each week at least. then i boiled squash and eat them just like that. i think that you really have to force your kid to learn how to eat them. and it takes a lot of discipline. give oat meal and other kind of healthy foods. there are some delicious and healthy foods out there that are not expensive. you just have to find ways. sometimes i really hate what i am doing but i just forced myself to enjoy healthy foods for my good. i know it will be harder for you to do or force that on your kid as kids love junk foods. maybe you don't have to take them away at once. try it gradually but give him lots of health foods while he is taking some junk foods also. try replacing th ose junk foods gradually with health food. give him lots of fruits, it is important for kids to have a good health so that when they grow up they will enjoy their teen life.

I agree too. The whole problem started when he went for a long Summer vacation with his father. He is fat and apparently dumb. He fed Diego with only junkfood and never did any exercise. The whole Summer was TV watching.
My daughter has him on a diet and with exercise and he is already better.

bLESS HIS HEART, HE IS SO young to have this problem. What were his symptons for them to find this out. It's going to be hard on him to have to do w/out all the things young people & old people like to eat. I'm fighting the battle to as u know & all i know is to watch your diet closely & i take a med everyday for it. I have been doing this for a long time but think my diet was not good for the problem. I'm afraid it will be an awful big adjustment for him. GOOD LUCK TO HIM.

U said a mouth full their lady, about men not being much worth especially at fathering. He's going to harm his child's health to look like the cool parent that let's his child do whatever he wants even if it's not good for them. What a dumb azz.
i hope your grandson gets better & i know u will do everything u can to help him do that. I'm glad u are looking for recipes for things that will not be harmful to him. It's going to be rough on him to get use to everything different. I wish him all the luck in the world to getting adjusted to all the changes in his youg life, hugs. jo

Your grandson's doctor should be looking at his normal diet very seriously. There are people who eat very healthy diets, high in fruits and vegetables, eating fish and poultry regularly, and not overdoing the red meats...and still have very high cholesterol. These people need to be on medication, or risk having strokes. Has his doctor asked his family to keep a food journal, to see exactly what he's eating? Treatment plans should look at whether his condition is genetic (how are his parents, grandparents, etc), or because of poor diet. What has his doctor recommended?
There are a number of things that can help lower cholesterol, IF the issue is diet-related. Swapping from animal fats (lard, butter, etc) to healthy oils (olive and canola) is one. Using ground turkey instead of beef, eating more fish, using more whole grains. I make turkey meatballs using oatmeal instead of breadcrumbs that my family loves.
I know that you are an excellent cook, using lots of fruits and veggies. If his problem is diet-related, have him visit you more often...lol. Between your cooking, and long walks with the dog, he'd be feeling better in no time!

I think we will do some of the things you said, catla. It seems that the boy`s long vacation with his father, a fat and rather stupid man, triggered it all. He came back overweight and he had spent all the days eating junk food, much to his pleasure, of course.

Thatçs what we are trying to do. In fact, in his home with his mother he eats a well balanced diet. But he went for a long vacation with his father who is fat, eats only junk food and his whole exercise is to change the channels at the TV.

It is really alarming to know that a child who is only ten years of age has high cholesterol level. However,I will ask you to make him follow the medications and have a balanced diet..also if he does yoga regularly then I think it will be possible for him to get rid of the problem.Regularly exercising under the guidance of a proper trainer will augment his mental health and help him to get over the cholesterol problem.

The doctor only gave him diet as it seems all this was triggered my a long vacation with his fat father. He only eats junk food and evidently gave that to the child while he was with him. His cholesterol level has gone down since he came back to my daughter`s house. Thanks for answering.

Hello marguicha, I think your grandson should really need to change his diet lifestyle, should have strict compliance.
High cholesterol is at high risk for developing heart disease and worse heart attack.
There are actually several risk factors that affect one's cholesterol level. Diet, weight, physical activity, age and gender and it runs in families too.
My sister was found out to have a high cholesterol at the age of 24. The gp (general practitioner) thought she was overweight but she's so slim. GP informed to change her diet not more on meat but more on veggies, fish and be physically active.
We also doubted that she got it from our father's side.

If he's not overweight and he eats fairly good then his problem could be genetic. Some people are just like that and as a result need to be on medication and/or a special diet for the rest of their lives. Take me, for instance. I'm 52 and for most of my life have never really eaten the best things yet my doctor says that my cholesteral levels are just fine. Go figure!
Talk with his mom about going to the doctor and talking about a treatment plan for him. I hope this helps and I wish him all the best.

Very curious to hear about a child having high cholesterol. What has the doctor said. It must be a cause! Generally high cholesterol i present in adults who have certain diseases, such as Basedow, for example, or other metabolic troubles. I must be noticed that there is a difference between bad and good cholesterol. Anyway, reducing bad cholesterol is favored by olive oil and flax seeds lignans, among many other natural remedies. But first, you have to discover what is the cause of high cholesterol in a child. May be you need to have some tests again.

My daughter is taking care of it, but it seems that it all started when he went for a long holiday with his father. He is a very fat man that only eats junk food and leads a very sedentary life. The boy spent those days watching TV and eating ****. He came back overweight. The cholesterol level has gone back to normal in a couple of weeks at my daughter`s house. But we will have to watch him.

I've heard that oatmeal is supposed to be really good for lowering cholesterol! And it probably wouldn't be very hard to get a 10 year old boy to eat it, either. I hope this helps, and that things start to improve for him soon!

I found a very good recipe for low cholesaterol oatmeal cookies at the web. They also use brown sugar instead of the white one.

He has to eat more vegetable and fruits and guard him from eating junk foods so that he could easily recover . High fiber grains can also help reduce high cholesterol.

Your news really shocked me. I dont know kids nowadays are not getting helthier everyday. He should be strictly supervised when he is eating.I think one of the great contributors could be the fast foods and junk foods.
TRy whole grain cereals, avoid fatty rich foods. or you could consult a dietician, or his doctor for that.
In his age group, it is really quite hard since when he is at school there are so many tempting unhealthy foods.Encourage your grandson to have exercise or you could join him in strolling or walking.

My daughter came for a visit yesterday and told me that the last controls were normal for the bad cholesterol, but that the good one was too low. They have changed their way of eating but all this happened while in vacation with his father. He only eats junk food and children love that too if given the chance. The boy`s father is very fat and he does not seem to care.
Still, the change of eating habits is on the way.

Cholesterol is an unwanted fat in the body which can be reduced by regular excericise. Banaced diet has a great impact in keeping a person to be fit and healthy always. your grandson should avoid rice and other carbohydrated foods, oily foods and snacks. Also should avoid junk foods that involves ghee and milk products instead ask him to drink lot of water and involve himself in any kond of physical activites.
