Me, i'm not..i prefer to listen; and when the teacher calls me, i freeze, my mind goes blank and i stutter.. It's because i have this problem on self esteem. I really admire those people who can freely express themselves without fear. But now I'm off to college, there's no room for shyness there- i just hope i can overcome my "fear" and believe in my ideas..

Hello lady1993!
As a student, I must say that I have always been a participative student. I have always participated in class discussions as actively as I can. Sometimes, I take the initiative to share my opinions or to answer questions. But most of the time, I am called upon by my teachers to recite.

It has been a very long time since I was a student, but when I was in school, it was much better for me to be able to participate in discussions and hands on activities than it was for me to listen to a lecture. I don't think the fact that I learned best this way had anything at all to do with the self esteem that I had. Instead, I think it is because I am left handed and that means that I am a much more visual person that other people tend to be.

Well I am okay.I am reasonably good at expressing myself and my class participation depends on a lot of factors like my interest in the subject,my mood that day,the person who is sitting next to me and my hunger level at that moment...:P....When the teacher calls me and I am not comfortable with the answer,I do try coming up with a confident response none whatsoever. However,if the question is too out of bounds for me,then I humbly accept that I don't know how to answer that and ask the teacher to excuse me.Works for me mostly!!

yes, seems my childhood days were very active with the help of my lovable parents. So I get used to it in school to share what i have in my mind with relation to every topic our teacher discussed. Being deeply appreciated by all around us makes one to reflect what they have. Its about action-reaction environment upbringing.

you need to be outspoken in college to succeed.it is also easier for you to learn through expressing your ideas and thoughts.some people are born with great self-esteem and some are just late to get it.college is the time when everybody will express themselves.

I used to be like that too, whenever my teacher asks me something i just cant say a word. Im too shy to utter just out anything. But when i got into h.s. then the whole story changed i became so active in school activities not to mention class actvitivies, winning some academic contests, even won the student council presidency as early as 3rd year high school up to 4th year h.s. I think i just woke up from the reality that if i wont do something bout my fear then i will be forever weak, but if i will try my best theres a good chance that i will be really excellent. And thats what i just did

its good that now you are ble to join sites like this to express your thoughts, gain friends, and learn.. when i was a student (even in college) i dont participate in discussions, i dont to be on the limelight.. i preffer to be on the background like be the props maker or the researcher, but not the reporter.. i was comfortable being inside my little box. im just glad that teachers get the higher percentage of grades from written exams and projects, otherwise i will not pass.. i guess i haven't overcome that fear until now (i've improved i must say).. so setsuna26 continue your plan to try your best to participate when you get to college,it will definitely boost your self-esteem and confidence..

hi,
when i was a student, i really am a participative student. i used to raising my hands whenever the teacher asks questions and i used to participate in discussions by answering on my seat..i just can't take it being just quiet.

I think most people have that fear of speaking in front of an audience. I remember in elementry school we used to have to write reports on stuff we learned in class. History reports, etc. Then we had report days we had to stand in front of the class and read them. When i was in sixth grade i was "sick" on one report day. Returning to school the next day the teacher smiled and said she had a surprize for the class. We were all excited. But it was short lived. Because so many were "sick" on report day it was cancled the previous day and today was report day. Lol!!!

hi lady , i too had so many friends who used to stutter . or would shy to speak same kind of problem. and i know that its due to lack of confidence in ourself . it happens bcoz we think wat our teacher or class mates will think about us when we tell these .... that , if i tell wrong answer something . that the main culprit . fist develop a good speaking skill , then try to be confident when you speak , talk to stranger , as its a pratice session to develop those skill, every time think and talk that doesnot mean you have think long time to speak . think as if you have to lead , act according to that ,u will suceed

Not really, I prefer to listen too, or talk with my classmates. I only answer when the teacher calls my attention.

We are so alike lady1993. I am also like you when I was still a student and I have to say this, I am still like that at present. So I advice you to 'treat' yourself as early as possible :D Do not hesitate to voice out your opinions especially if it was being asked. My problem before is that I am always afraid that my answer is wrong or my ideas are incorrect. Do not be afraid to make mistakes or be afraid what other people would say and think about you. You can't please everybody. Whatever ideas or opinions you say, they would always have something to say. Let them know who you are. Never hide your true self because if you do that, at the end of the day, it is only who would suffer. I hope that helps. Have a nice evening.

The same thing was with me whenever teacher call me to participate in any activity I feel shy and not like to join it. Still I fear about participation in any activity in my community.

It really depends on what subject. I am normally not a participative student but when the teacher talks about something interesting, then that is the time when i start listening and stop talking. Happy mylotting.
