Hello friends,
Last Monday, I had a case of very painful period cramps. It is a condition called "dysmenorrhea". It's not really serious, but it caused me a lot of discomfort and pain, and can limit my activities. I try to avoid taking over the counter pain relievers because I don't want to be dependent on medication. I don't experience this a lot, but there are times I get a case of really painful cramps.
What are the home remedies/treatment you can suggest to lessen period pains?
Kindly share.
Thanks!

I don't really get dysmenorrhea, but I lived with a friend for 2 years who gets really terrible cramps every time she gets her period. The first morning after she gets the cramps, if the pain isn't so unbearable, she wills herself to do a 20-minute exercise routine, mostly squats and lunges. I know it's kind of counter-intuitive but she swears it reduces the pain. I think it has to do with endorphins. I've also seen her do yoga and she says it also eases the pain.
She drinks lots of liquids, mostly the hot-mixture type like tea. I remember now, her mom bought her mint tea and she would always ask me to make her some whenever she has dysmenorrhea. She also sucks on mint candies all of the time - apparently, a doctor friend of theirs told her that it helps with the pain. I've also seen her drink ginger tea and a weird kind of veggie juice made up of parsley, carrot and cucumber. The ginger tea was great for her.
I've also read in a magazine the basil is a good natural painkiller so you can add lots of basil to your meals. Cinnamon is also known to be a natural anti-cramp herb so add lots of it to your dessert. Lastly, I think you'll benefit a lot from a warm mineral bath (one cup each of sea salt and baking powder mixed with your warm bath water) - it's tried and tested to relax tense muscles and brings instant relief.
Hope this helps :-)

Hi justdroppingby,
Wow, you have a lot of helpful tips. I never knew sucking on mint candies could ease up the pain. I'll take note on the ginger tea, basil and cinnamon. It really sounds therapeutic. I'll also try the mineral bath, to relax at the same time. Thanks for sharing!

No problem :-) Yeah I guess living with someone who has really really terrible dysmenorrhea (she wouldn't go to school for 3 days each month, it's that bad) has kind of made an indelible mark on me. Happy experimenting!

Hi ybong,
I know this is more like a girls' discussion, but I do appreciate having you here and contributing your two cents just like albert ;)
Yup, hot compress is a tried and tested remedy for period pains. I had tried it, and it really does ease up the pain. You're so lucky to be a boy!

I guess you're right. Men are more lucky if you compare the pain that each our body give us. We don't give birth, we don't have to deal with cramps and we don't bleed naturally. If we look into all of those that each of you have to go through i can't help but wonder that god must have been really angry with Eve when he caught her eating that forbidden fruit .

haha! interesting concept, but I think of it more like "an essence of being a woman" rather than a punishment.

Hiii there,
It rarely happen with me.I do take pain killer to kill pain and i keep my work aside for some time and take rest for 2-3 hours.
If its happening on regular basis check your hemoglobin and take some homeopathic remedy.Homeopathy works good on such a things.

Hi piya,
Well, you're lucky you don't experience this frequently. It's really tough. But despite the pain, I don't take any medications, because I don't want to be dependent on them. Maybe I'll try homeopathic remedy, though I'm not sure what to do specifically...

I would attest to drinking ginger tea, that's very effective for me. And I found a new one called Mila which comes from Chia seed this is also very good especially menstrual pains, irregular periods and any problems that deals with reproductive organs.

Boy can I relate to that one! I usually only have 1 or 2 bad ones a year. But those can be very tough, I've even missed work a few times over the years because of it.
I find that adding extra calcium helps me alot. I try to drink soy milk and other good sources of it every day. The week before it's due, I will add a supplement and I don't think of that as any kind of medicine.
If the cramps hit hard, I find that yoga and stretching helps alot. Follow that by a nice hot bath with my favorite bath gels and it helps alot!

Hi tallygirl,
We do have bad ones every year. It's really tough. I must try your suggestion, by adding up calcium. I'll drink some milk or probably eat some cheese. But I get too lazy to exercise whenever I had a period though. LOL. Having a warm bath could really help me too. Thanks for sharing!

Hi! I too experience really painful cramps. I even faint because of the pain. Now, I don't experience that extreme pain anymore. What I do to lessen the pain are:1) have a warm compress (boil a water and place it in a container, a bottle glass will do) and place it at the painful area. 2)lie in a prone position, with legs on you chest, pressing your belly. 3)and try to watch tv, so that you couldn't think of the pain so much and forget about the pain. I think that's all I know how.. Hope it will work with you.

Hello onlyprincess, I for one experienced dysmenorrhea during my period. I have a friend who told me that a week before our period we need to eat a piece of banana everyday til our period, it really helps. I don't depend much on medication too 'til I can tolerate the pain I don't take pill at all. During your period you could do some exercises to ease lower back pain or abdominal pain. Usually when am on bed, supine lying I keep both my legs up at least 45 degree. I try to do with hot compress too it eases the pain. I avoid cold drinks, sour foods.

I had this dysmenorrhea too and i really want to die when i have my periods every month.
When i have stomach pains, i put a hot water in bottle in my stomach, it calm the pain. For nauseas, i drink baked sodas with water or eat menthol candies. I heard that lemon juice in hot water calm he nauseas too and also eating sugar.
