My friend is asking me if Facebook is going to charge the members. I also read about this on the Internet, but I am not sure if it's true or not. My friend and I were discussing over this topic, and think it's quite unlikely for Facebook to charge the members, as Facebook is not getting revenue from the member's fees, but from advertisers or perhaps the applications. I suppose Facebook is able to get much revenue because of the popularity of members. If Facebook is going to charge, I think it will lose many members, as there are other social networking sites that do not charge, and thus Facebook may lose its advertisers. What do you think about this? Do you think Facebook is really going to charge? Or is it just a rumour?

I don't thinj facebook will start chargibg it's users. I remember a recent interview by the facebook creators who said that they wanted to widen their market share. They wanted everyone in the world to have a facebook account. Twitter, orkut, linkedin, hi5 are all still out there and looking to capture some of the market share facebook enjoys. These are all free services. Also linkedin is still very popular among working people. And also as a lot of people have pointed out, the majority of facebook's revenue comes in from their adertisers. They are also collaborating with media sources to allow the show on facebook icon. Membership charges would result in a lot of users leaving and evebtually result in lesser revenur from these other sources. That's why i defibitely feel facebook is not going to start charging anytime soon.

Hi Nessa, It's really impossible for everyone to use facebook if they are charging, as there are many free internet service out there, people will always go for the free ones, especially for leisure. I have not heard about linkedin, I'll go and take a look. Kingsizewe, It's kinda weird that this rumor being mentioned in your local news, if it's a rumor.

I am not fan of facebook and don't use It, but I watched on my local news, that there is a possibility for facebook to charge Its members, but this sounds too silly for me. Social network will lose many users of doing that and I can't beleive this will happen in future.

Yeah, I suppose thousands of members will leave Facebook if they are going to charge. I didn't know the rumor has been around for quite some time.

I'm pretty sure that Facebook have stated they will not charge for using their service. Let's face it plenty of people will leave if they introduced a charge so it's not in their interests!

If facebook is going to start charging or have membership fees, they're gonna loose a lot of members because facebook isn't the only social networking site in the world. There are a lot out there that are free. Also they would loose their reputation..

There is a nasty rumour going around that facebook is going to start charging everyone a monthly fee. A group against charges has been set up on facebook. However, if you go to the help menu on facebook and do a search for charges, then you will find an article that says they will never start charging for membership. I don't know where the rumour started but I think it is only a rumour. They won't charge. There are too many free alternatives available. Imagine the number of people they would lose. I don't think so.

Alright here's the fact about according to your question. You asked is facebook going to charge? The answer is no! For a few years now this rumor has been spread worldwide. One group mentioned that Facebook planned to charge a monthly fee of $4.99 per month, but it turned out to be false. Here's something to also consider, there a millions and millions of free users using Facebook. Another thing to add is that more people have merged to use this site more than myspace. Because of its popularity this is doing facebook good for their promotion for their social networking site. Now say they have made the plan to start charging people to use it -- guess what? Millions of those users will stop using facebook then those who make, promote and use facebook will not only lose its popularity but close down to be in the pits. This would even fall to the same issue if even Myspace made that same attempt. So everyone take a breather, there will be no charging fee per month using facebook. So go ahead and enjoy it, play farmville, cafe world, mafia wars or whatever you find amusing doing on it. Have a nice day!

Hi there, thanks for your clarification. I didn't know the rumor has been around for years, and I am wondering why this is happening, and did Facebook actually clarify this?

Facebook can't charge it members for certainly they will most likely lose them all. I believe it should rather be the other way around. They should pay their users for they have made facebook very popular and for this Facebook has certainly yielded millions into their account.

It'll be really nice if facebook is paying, it'll benefit many users and I think the users will be more addicted to it.

I don't know really if they will charge or not. But if they will, I will be going to other free social sites then. Besides, they can charge me if ever I was using their site as a means for promoting my business. But since I am only using it as a means for communicating my friends, I don't think that it is fair to ask for a payment. Anyway, as to what other Mylotter have said, they have been earning money already on Farmville alone, so I guess the issue of charging members are already been there... like for the gamers, if you want you can pay, if you don't want, then it is still free to use.

Yeah, I do agree with you. I think there are still some users pay for playing some of the games, but it's their choice. For a social networking site, I don't think it should charge the users. I hope it's merely a rumor.

I really dont think that facebook will charge its users. They like all their users and there are about a million users probably so it would be hard to process all those payments.

I think processing the payments is not a problem, there are technologies for doing the payment processing. But I think the site will really lose many members if they are going to charge. Perhaps it's really a rumor only...
