Working at Night..is it good or bad?

I was a call center agent before for 3 years. So far I haven't had any bad feelings or got sick from working graveyard shift (working at night). But I'm quit alarmed since I got a lot of news and messages from people and friends that its not good to work at night. My friends are still working at night. Is this god for the health or bad?

Hey there..I work UK timings, auditing client portfolios for a Chicago-based bank but we audit UK clients. So I have to co- ordinate with the UK partners. My timings are 1.30pm - 10.30pm. Though these timings aren't so bad, in the long run it messes up your system. I would know. When I was in college, I used to eat so much but still didn't put on weight. After I started working, I have gained weight and can't seem to lose it. Your cycle changes, as you sleep at the wrong time, eat at the wrong time which makes you gain weight, some may have sleep deprivation. Its not good to do these sorta jobs for a long time. It definitely affects your health. I'm on the look out for a 9am-5pm job. That will help you stay fit and have a proper work-life balance.

Hi Tangeryne! Good for you that you work during those times. Before I worked at 1am-10am. Really really not good for the health. We need to get back to our normal and healthy weight.

Good things you still use stairs at work, its a good exercise though. Waling on weekends is also alot better. Good for you. Before I cant even go to the gym nor do my chores. But now Im glad I can go out and play like badminton and jog with my friends.

True. Once the global-operating model is in place, we will be able to do the same job but on a 9am-5pm shift. but that will take at least 2yrs to go live. These timings suck, I'm only gaining weight and though I feel the need to exercise but I just can't wake up in the morning. Earlier I used to go to the gym at 8am but I couldn't get up at 8am everyday so after 3months had to give up that. The only exercise I try to give myself is taking the stairs at work and walking on weekends 1

I think it really depends more on whether you take care of yourself or not. Working a set night shift isn't a bad thing as long as you balance your schedule so that you have time to spend with friends and family too. When I worked 12 til 8 am, I had several friends that did the same so we supported each other. And I'm a nite owl by nature so it worked well for me. Sometimes, it was difficult to balance out things that could only happen during the day like banking or going to a dentist appt and then I'd get my sleep all messed up and feel run down. But it's back to the balance thing. If you have been working for over 3 years at your job, you've already adapted to the schedule and I'd not worry too much about what others say. I've never read any medical study information that says it's harmful so do what is best for you. Maybe the folks that tell you otherwise miss you and want you to match their schedule so they can see you more. Take care!

As a musician, I used to work from about 9 p.m. through to about 3 a.m. the following morning. When I first started in this business I used to drink as well after work, but it was this that was spoiling my health more than the night-working. I quit drinking and I was fine. I did it for about 12 years before going into another business and I don't feel I have any problems now. _Derek

Hi derek_a, Glad that you quit drinking. Im not really a hard drinker. I just drink when in a party or in a celebration. Very occassional. But i can still see the effects of drinking. So i stop as well. Im glad im still fine as well. Thanks for sharing your ideas.

actually its not bad for your health. there's what we called as circadian rhythm or popularly known in layman's term as biological clock, in which the body really adjusts to your sleep-wake hours. so if your routine is your awake in the evening and sleeps during its just like the other way around, just make sure that you sleep enough about 8-10 hours a day.

Working at night is very much dangerous and unnatural. Working at night means opposing nature. I too had gone through that shift and I was lucky that it did not left bad effects on me, but that won't be the case with everyone. Working at night suddenly ages your face and you start looking older if you are continuously in it. That's why many companies offer night allowance for night workers. But that is not good. You disturb your biological clock which is set by nature to work with Sun's presence and not with Sun's absence. Try to avoid night shifts if possible. Also the greatest threat is that you lose to spend quality time with your family.

I agree. My mom told me once, that Im like a boarder in our own house as I go to work at night and then when I got home im sleeping the whole day and they woke up, eat and then work. That's my daily routine. I don't even have time to go out with some friends on a Saturday. I'm not at home when a special occasions usually happens at night, like a birthday party or something. grrr....

peoples bodies are programmed to sleep at night. examples of this involve the hormone melatonin that rises in the body when exposed to darkness as people sleep. melatonin causes the body to relax more. people can't get as much melatonin when they sleep during the day. However, something like this can affect certain people more than others. I say people who want to work at night naturally are not affected by not sleeping at night as much as someone who is naturally an early bird. Personally I still think its good and more healthy to get at least some sleep during the night even though it may not be a full nights sleep no matter who you are.

Hmmm... Interesting elmiko. This means that we really need to sleep at night and rest than work.

I am not an authority on this because I have never worked nights but my ex partner used to and he found it difficult because his work situation consisted of rotating shifts. I guess that if one sticks to the same shift and adjusts the routine accordingly it may be okay. I would imagine the most important thing would be to get enough sleep and it is not always easy to sleep during the day which may explain the bags under the eyes!

Good point! I also feel the same way in the morning. And also its too crowded in the morning, like if your waiting for a bus or a cab, people are always in a hurry. And also I hate going out when its too hot outside. Hahaha...

Mother nature has created night to sleep and day to work so that is against law of nature. I worked for few months in night shift and it was not a good experience for me. There are many people working in night shift and still helathy, I think its all about being comfortable or habitual but it does affect our body. We should try not to work in night shift but sometime we have to go for it without any choice as I had to work initially without choice.

I have seen lot of people (Boys and Girls) working during night in call Centers. I have watched their life style, and I see it is just not normal. Working long for extended periods during nights not only disturbs the body clock; but it also interferes with other bodily functions as well. I see they do not have their meals at a fixed time. This spoils their digestive system. Shifts duties should be such that it may offer them minimum eight hours sleep; and they should be able to eat regularly in time.

Hi achille, Yeah, I do work in a call center up until now. But luckily i got promoted and back to a regular shift. I agree with what you said. Its from my own personal experience. Eating in a different time is really really hard. Sleeping in the morning and working at night. Argh!

you are lucky...i've had the health complication after stopping for 2 years and then going back to the call center industry.it wasn't an easy decision....now i'm much better..i had to opt to think about more important things aside from work and satisfying the company or customer's needs....if you really want it then it can be good for you..if you just wanted to be in it for a need i suggest you think about it again because it can be hard to go bavck to being "normal" again..;)

I know that working in the graveyard shift earns a lot of money. But as to health concerns, it is bad for the health. A doctor of both western and oriental medicine told us that our kidneys should be resting by 11pm. Afterwards, this would overload its usage. So you may think you look like how old you are right now, but the body inside you is already older that your original state. In addition to that, working in graveyard shift makes your day to night and vise versa, how can that be a good thing? especially to the health of a person. its really a bad thing.

That is so true sweechi, I was hospitalized when I was still working in a graveyard shift due to kidney problems. Glad I was able to get back on my knees. And im glad its not that serious at all.

Well it should be bad since we are supposed to be sleeping at night. But I have some friends that also work as a call center agent with the same shift as yours but they are still perfectly fine. Except of course they now have noticeable eye bags. I think it will depend on how well your body can adjust to that kind of work. Just be sure to eat and drink healthy beverages and foods and lots of vitamins to keep your body in working condition.

I think, that's the reason why I become bigger and bigger everyday. Hahaha... After work I go straight home, eat my breakfast and then sleep. Then woke up at night and start working. No exercise. Seat for 9 hours or more. hmm.. not really good. I'm glad I got back to my regular schedule. But still worries about my friends situation. Hehe

i think i agree with your friends that working at night is bad for health... it is just not good for your body because night time is the time when your body is supposed to rest... and you are turning the routines around if you are working at night... also, the night weather is not good for the health... this is what i think... take care and have a nice day...

I don't care of the night shift exactly. BUT a job is a job now days no matter the hours. Though my hubby's job rotates from nights to days every few months. But not only does he do that every few months but he also adjusts every week from being up all night + sleeping all day half the week to being awake during the day. I don't know how he manages, but I am thankful he does when he is off so he can spend time with his family. But I think a night shift is better for someone who is single IMO.

hi screwdriver, I am a bit unsure about the effects on health of working nights shift but I have a handful of friends who hates working at night. My former colleague who used to work in a call center company got hospitalized after taking sleeping pills due for having some abnormalities in sleeping. Actually, I work night shift for almost 2 years and I gained weight and have some difficulty in sleeping. It does affect my health in a lot of aspect but I got used to it as time goes by and night shift works fine with me and in most cases I prefer working at night.

Awake in the night is just opposite to the biological clock. So its not good for health as some one says. But when you stick it with this working at night and sleepin in the day nothing serious problem causes you. But you may miss all the beautiful things in the day.
