only to find out that it was a girl.I was sold a bird from a pet shop to go into our avary and i told them it had to be male, well a year later it started to lay eggs funny male cockateal.I have now two female ones and today a lady sold me her male one so thankfully this should solve the problem with one of the female birds.I wanted to try to breed them.

This didn't happened to me but to my housemate. He and his girlfriend bought a pair of rabbits. The guy in the shop told them one is boy and the other is girl. But they only realize it was both boys after a few months.

My very first pet was a little black and white dog and for some weird unknown reason I insisted on called him(?) Roy. No one ever said that was a boy's name my dog was a girl dog. Then a few months later my Granny who was very outspoken finally explained that girl dogs peed crouched down and boys lifted their leg. You've got to understand I was only 5 years old and very stubborn. However she must have convinced me because I had a big ceremony renaming her Royetta.
Now I have a girl dog who also lifts her leg while crouching!!! Weird!

I really don't remember if this has ever happened to me or not. I might have been given a pet as a child and been told that it was the opposite gender to what I found out later. I bet this was embarrassing to you. I hope you have good luck breeding your birds. I bet they are beautiful!

A rat that a friend gave us when I was a kid. We had all males, she gave us a female that she thought was a male. Pretty soon we were hip deep in them. We ended up separating them all by gender and selling the females to a pet shop.

Ive never had that happen to me but when my cat had kitten i gave a male to some friends. They came back and said it was a female. I thought they were nuts because i can tell the difference. A few months later they came back and said the took the cat to get spayed and the vet told them they couldnt that it would have to be nutered because it was a male.

I've never seen the situation where someone had a pet that they thought was a male and it turned out that it was a female. However, last month I had my cat neutered and when I went to pick him up from the clinic there was another gentleman there to pick up his cat as well. He learned upon going to pick up his cat that she wasn't a female at all, she was actually a male. They went ahead and neutered him and let him know about the situation when he picked up his pet.

This happened to us with a kitten, I went to the local shelter and told them I needed a male kitten for my daughter, they showed me 3 males, and I picked out a black and white one for my daughter, well it had kittens 6 months later, so I can tell you it wasn't any male cat that I have ever seen the likes of before. It just so ticked me off. I hate it when they tell you at the shelters its a male when you know, they know its a female.

I bought pets only one time in my life. and it was female. It was female bird. I never though to buy any male bird for her.
But i gave her name what was female name. Actually my bird was kids so need to partner on that time.

That happens all the time. My friend got two bunnies that were supposed to be girls and they wound up having two litters of babies. I bought a rabbit at a pet store and for years I had no idea that it was a boy until it got sick and had to go to the vet and she told me it was male. Her/his name was abby & that didnt suit her/him after that. I always felt kind of stupid that I couldnt tell that it was a boy. It just didnt have any external signs of being a male. With birds when they are very little its hard to tell if they are male or female. I had a parakeet that it took at least a year to find out if it was a male or female because I had to see if his nose turned blue when it did i knew it was male. I miss that bird it talked.

Unfortunately that sort of thing is quite common. Birds are one type of animal where male/female gender is hard to distinguish. Cockatiels are difficult because the males and females look almost exactly alike. I think cheek patches are supposed to be slightly brighter on males, but that's not guaranteed as I've seen girls with very bright patches.
You have to be so careful when purchasing pets of a specific gender. You either have to take what you get or get a written return policy or guarantee before you leave.

That would be strange, to think you have a male bird, and later it starts laying eggs..lol. I would't know what to do, at least you did finally get your male bird.

Mine was not a bird but we had got a cat and we were certain that it was a girl! I know it is hard to tell by features if a cat is male or female but we were still almost certain it was a girl. Well - when the whole spraying around the house started we found out. Then it was off to the vet to get him neutered! Oh well it is still a very nice cat rather it be girl or boy! Happy Mylotting!

gender f birds can usually be ssen after months/ some show their gender distinction when it was already adult. maybe its better to have a trusted store the next time you buy a pet or even just purchase an accessory or food for it. It's nice to know tat you you already solved that matter.. :-)

We bought a cat once, and named her Princess because we thought she was a girl. It was months later when we saw that she actually was a boy! However, we already had a female cat, and because we thought Princess, (we named her Salem when we found out she was a girl) was a girl, we did not Spay her. So we ended up having a litter of kittens later on, which we actually were not expecting.
