I have read several opinions about the fact that many people are not satisfied members who do not write correctly in English.
It is their right to an opinion.
I do not know of any international law requiring English
Great discoverers were Spanish and Portuguese.
Great empires in the world were Italy,Germany,France,Russia,Turkey...
Cultures were mixed in each country and different communities live in peace
Why English has become the first international language?
(I hope that nobody will beat me for this topic

Hello Cip,
I believe it has something to do with who's the most dominating and powerful country of that time. during the medieval times, Spain and Portugal were amongst more powerful nations then that latin was the most popular and most spoken language, until the spain's defeat from england which spark the popularity in english, which become more popular in the US's own english language since after the World War II. still this day, US is still the most powerful nation on the planet, despite of it's financial crisis.

I think the language somewhat relates to the power of a country. If a country becomes much more powerful and important in the world, then its language will be important, too. This is why English has a big effect on the world. Besides, compare to other languages, I think English is easier to learn.
I love China

I wish i could answer you on this one. As i am english myself, i can understand why people have trouble with it. I cannot speak or write any other language and those who are from different tongues have to do it in english. Cruel actually. TATA.

hi inday pagka poringit sa imong views. well as you meant to say that everyone is entitled to his/her opinion.its fine with me anyway. my little rejoinder is that in terms of global super powers, U.S.A is on top and as such the U.S. of A extends its vast powers toward international treaties with many countries. Nevertheless terms and conditions stipulated in the treaties are therefor stated in U.S. language...the majority language of the American espongklonkgs.

I just think that is because the English went about conquering all parts of the world and spread the language with every conquest. In India English came into use during the 200 years of English domination and despite freeing the country of the English rulers, we are still left with the legacy of the English language.
At one point the English used to say that the sun never sets on the English empire and that was the time when the internationalization was happening so that might be the reason why English became the international language of choice.
Cheers!

hi cip, why should some one beat you for your opinions. You have full freedom to write your thoughts. May be because they captured many countries all over the world in last 4 or 5 centuries.
India is a country of rich culture and civilization..

I also ask the same question. It is not that I am against any English speaking culture, or people. I was just curious, and what is the history and the effect in it? The only reason I knew it is that U.S. won the WWII, and split power balance with Russia. After that, they gain their superpower. People admire U.S. more than ever. What about now? Would our history change again. Like China has the most population, and I think more than 1/3 of Earth Population speak Chinese. Can it be the largest people speaking Language in the World?
I hope you won't beat me to say that too.

Is it because English is the easiest to learn? It is not my native language but we learned English has been our medium of instruction since we started school. I find it a very crisp and portable language. Other languages amaze me and are so intricate that I easily give up learning them.

Hi cip, no one will beat you for this, least of all me. Just as every one have their rights to an opinion, you have a right to your opinion too.
As for your question, English has become the first international language because it is most widely spoken all over the world. Simple reason.
But that does not mean that every body should speak English and that those who don't speak are not right or anything.
I have noticed that too, that some members complain about another member's use of English. I think the best way to deal with this is just ignore them. Not every one can speak perfect English, even the English don't speak perfect English always. Grammatical error, spelling mistake, etc are bound to happen. And some member who complain about poor English also make lots of mistakes.
So, if any one complains about your English or other's English, just take it in stride and smile to yourself. That's my best advice for that.

probably English is easier to deal with..
but there are other languages too.... but..the pronunciation...the efforts etc depends a lot on the native people...
the concept of an international language as you know came into being for trade,travel...
thanks for starting the discussion..
have a great day/night....

Firstly I think that the reason why English is the first International Language has been well explained.
But I must say as an English person I get very annoyed and embarrassed at the amount of English people who travel abroad and take it for granted that everyone can understand them.
Myself I only speak French and German with a sprinkling of Spanish and Italian, but any other country I go to I always learn a few basic words like please, thank you, hello, etc just so that I can show I have tried a little.
God help any foreigner visiting England who doesn't speak the language because there are so few of us who could translate for them!
I think that the non English speakers on this site do a fantastic job, I am really impressed and I know were it me writing on a French or German site my words would look shocking!!
I think also that this must be an excellent opportunity for people to practise their English and in no way should people be critisised for their attempts at the language.

Because Britain used to be the most powerful country when geographical great discovery. And they dominate America for a long time so Americans speak English. And then the U.S. become the most powerful country after independance followed Britain.
Besides, we Chinese used to have an opportunity to let Chinese become the international language. But we were so nearsighted that we gave it up.
It's cruel but real that the culture expansion must be accompanied with sword and blood in history!

Hi Cip.. Nice topic to discuss... I trust English became the international language because of the British Empire... There was time when they used to say that 'sun never sets in British Empire...' They have been all over the world... From East to West!!! I trust that is the reason why English is made international language... Just my opinion...

cip hi okay Iam from the United States and why not English? We need some language all can use and English was selected and why not? what the heck is wrong with the US okay we are a young country yet we have helped almost all the countries you have named, and we have been there in times of crises every time. Yes I will beat you ,he h e, thirty lashes with a wet noodle, do not want to leave any bruises lol. Good heavens do not suggest German as an international language, that is one of the hardest for me, it sounds like they are gargling half the time. I think maybe English was the easiest of the languages to learn, and anyway English is composed of words from all over the world. So again I s ay What the heck is Wrong with English? But for me I do not criticize anyone here who does not write a correct sentence in English as we are human beings and humans are indeed human, that is they are not perfect.

English has become the international language basically after the cold war between Russia and the States, long history, the states became a superpower and now all the world speaks in that language, anyway for me english is the most easy language to learn, i've tryed to talk with americans that have like 5 or 7 years in spanish (my mother language) annd belibe me, they just suck, and i learnt english just by going on chat rooms. In languages like spanish, italian, portuguese and french you have a word for almost everything and in english 1 word could means many things, and the sentence structure is really simple.

You forgot British and Inca empires : they had also their period of glory.
We are both speaking latin languages and their grammar is very difficult for a non latin speaker ; they have a lot of shades, and a misinterpretation is easy. I had some spare time when I was writing my thesis 25 years ago, and I took Arabic courses for beginners during a year : it is the most finely-shaded language I ever tried to learn. I think that English is easier to learn. Many of us are doing grammatical errors because it is not our native language, but we are able to understand each other better than in another one. There are other clear languages that should have been used internationally, like German or Dutch. English became a widely spoken language after the first World War, when the United States and the British Empire were powerful.
I know that some members don't appreciate our bad English, but I also know that if myLot had not a don't "post discussions, responses or comments criticizing members for bad/broken English or bad spelling. Everyone is welcome at myLot (...)" I should have probably not joined. I am grateful that myLot gave me the opportunity to meet all kind of people around the world, and to improve my English everyday.

Many years ago, I worked a year in a city at 120 kms of where I was living. I was taking a train at 6 in the morning and was at destination an hour later. One day, I fall asleep and awake at the terminus station in Paris. It was 9 o'clock... I phoned to my employer that I was very tired and wanted to take the day as an holiday . I never said what happened, but I remember I spent a good 'holiday' .

We try as we can
That reminds me of a funny thing.
I was in Germany.
I asked about a destination.
A friendly gentleman told me that I need to take bus 69 to 10m from the place where we talk.
I boarded the bus,I went 10 stations and...I was left alone in the bus.
The driver looked in the mirror, raised eyebrows and then I understood.
The bus was good...but not direction

We don't actually know why english was chosen to be the international language but i think living on one world called "earth" we do need to understand one another not just using sign language, having one international language is a great help in understanding what other people or rather countries need/s. Being able to live fully you must not only help yourself but live for others as well and to be able to understand other you must/have to communicate not just gestures but talking would be better cause gestures or sigh language could be sometimes misinterpreted.

We'll that is why there are translator who are specialized in different language.
Of course we are all free to speak of our own languages but what I only hate is that in our country, you are sometimes force to speak in English though that is not your native language.
