Man on the loose, already killed, would you send your child to school?

In the UK a man recently released from prison has already killed a man, injured a woman and injured a policeman and is now threatening to hurt memebers of the public, police know his rough whereabouts but are telling parents it is safe to send children to school. I for one if I lived in this area would be locking my doors and keeping my children home until he is caught. What would you do? Huggles. Ellie :D

It would depend upon how close I was to the rough location of the man, how actively the police were looking for him, and how certain the police were in their estimation. If I was in the direct circle, I probably wouldn't, and I might just leave the area until he was caught.

Hi Anneeliz, He slipped through the net of a cordened off village yesterday and is armed and yet police are saying it is safe to send children to school as they will be protecting, he has already slipped through their net so I for one if lived in the local area would be staying indoors for now until he is caught. Think I might do the same too, in fact he broke into a house and stayed there whilst a family wasaway and they are too scared to return to it. Huggles. Ellie :D

Oh it is terrible I hope that with injured people all be well. I am kid, but my school time was ended before one month. If I be a parent and I have a kids I certainly do not let them go to school, because It is too dangerous. This man is a maniac and very dangerous I guess. I remember when in my country there was some people group who fled from prison. But, our police officers collaboration with border guards catch them. Usually prisoners fleeing to other countries, but in your situation man was released it is a bit different. But, I hope that police officers would catch him and put he in the correct place. Have a nice day!

Hi, ellie333. I would be kind of worried about my child going to school if there was a mad man on the loose. I would have to ask for protection from the law. I agree, I would have my kids at home until this man is caught! There is just no telling what he may have planned for this town. I would have to move somewhere else if this ever happened.

If I live in the rough whereabouts area, I would not send my child to school. I would probably go somewhere else and take my whole family with me. Thankfully, we live in the midlands, away from the danger area.

There is no way my child would be going to school with this sort of thing in the news. My daughter doesn't even go to the public school with far less than this sort of threat. She attends school at home online and that is where she is staying until she goes off to college.

Hi Alaskanray, As you read in Wolfies comment we get prosecuted if we do not send our children to school here in the UK, we even have to ask permission to take them on holiday out of normal school holidaqys but the safety of my child comes first so if I lived in the area I wouldn't be sending them until he is caught, he has alreaqdy killed and threatened to kill again and has seriously injured two people including one policeman. I recently asked about this too, although my emphasis was much more on his punishment. I don't know whether I would carry on as normal or go to ground as you suggest. On a wider scale, if we let terrorists scare us in this manner, our world would grind yo a halt. So I guess my answer is that I would do my best to keep my routine, but with caution. We will all die one day.

It won't happen as you and me well know, so therefore let him kill himself then at least we won't be paying for him in prison forever eh!

Hi Memnon, Sorry must have missed that discussion, police have now got him surrounded and he threatening to kill himself, will save us having to pay for him in prison I guess. Huggles. Ellie :D

I am rather hoping that he and all his accomplices will eke out their lives 20 hours a day on a chain gang to repay the horrendous cost of this operation- having had all their assets forfeit to Northumbria council authorities. The poor people of the county are likely to see huge hikes in council tax to pay for this!

Oh my!! So would I! My kids aren't old enough to take care of themselves if confronted with a criminal:( And you say this man has killed and injured 3 adults! I would definitely keep my kids home if I lived in the area....till the criminal is caught.

Hi 34momma, I can't believe the police are saying to send children to school when he is still hiding locally and now threatening to harm the public, the latest update is that they have arrested two people thought to have been helping him and they have found three of his mobile phones that he has used but they still haven't got him. I wouldn't send my child to school. I really do hope they catch him soon. Huggles. Ellie :D

No, I certainly would not. I would do the same as you. Lock my doors and not go out unless I had to and my family would all go with me so I'd know where they all were at all times. They try to play down these type of things so that we should all go on and do as normal. Who can with people like this loose? It's not normal!

I know the story with which you are referring too and the answer to your question is no I would not have sent my child to school with someone like that on the loose. I would have to keep them at home, because I would not be able to rest easy while they were at school with someone like that on the loose.

Likewise Gemini, there is no way I would have sent mine either. At least it all resolved now and we not having to pay for him in a jail butsounds like he did ask for help and never received so hardly suprising him came out and done something as horrific as this eh! Huggles. Ellie :D

I definitely will not let my children out of our house while that mad man is still at large. I'd talk to the school and tell them my concerns. In this kind of scenario wherein there is a very angry disturbed sick killer on the loose, I'm pretty sure the school would even be more thankful if every parent would decide to do the same. Until this man is put behind bars, I'd be adamant with my decision not to let my children out of the house.

As far as I know, the man in question, Raoul Moat, has made clear that his vendetta is only against members of the police force. He has not harmed any children, nor has threatened to do so. I suspect the police are trying to ensure that life progresses as normal (inasmuch as that is possible) for the local community.

Hi Joker, Welcome to myLot, no originally he said it as against the police but last night he changed his mind and told them that all the public should be alert as he was going to get them too, the police have steppedup the search but only found three mobiles phones that he has been using but not him. I don't know what I would do. If they have laws like here the child HAS to be in school and can't miss more than a couple days with out a Dr's excuse but perhaps seeing the circum stance they would better protect the students and communty as well. I hope the man is found so no harm comes to anyone further. It seems that happens fairly often that once they are released they go back to doing the things that got them sent away to prison before. I don't understand the logic in it.

hi ellie if his where abouts is unknown I would sure keep my kids home if I were in that situation. If the school objected I would have a chat with the principal that's for sure.that is just using our god given good sense. A killer is a killer and children are no match for him. What on earth were the police thinking?

Hey ellie, I would do the same thing! I would lock the doors and the windows and not leave the house until the morons that thought this azzhole was well enough to be released into the world caught him and hopefully killed him! What were they thinking? What kind of testing did they do to think that this man who was already a murderer was ok enough to be released back into the public?

Hi Opal, He has murdered since his release before he was in prison for violence but not murder, he is dangerous and seven days later the police still trying to catch, he has sent them letters, updated his facebok account, he is playing with them. The policesay they will have a presence at the school well even so I don't think that is good enough I would be keeping my children off of school until he caught and even get out of the area too. Last night, just after my son had gone on his bike into the village, a police helicopter was swooping low over our area, my first thought was 'Has Raoul Moat made it here?', I know I'm a fair way from Tyneside, but Britain is a fairly small country and it isn't inconceivable that he could have made it to Lancashire. Certainly if I lived in the area I would be VERY wary; our minds are still full of the nightmare Derek Bird caused in Cumbria, where innocent people were shot down randomly, I think I'd be keeping a VERY close eye on my child. Let's hope that he is found soon.

Hi Oldchem, It must be really frightening for people in that village, I would be moving out of the area also as well as not sending my children to school. I hope he is caught soon. He seems to being a RFambo type thing here, I just hopethat when he is caught it is before he has caused anymore harm to others. Huggles. Ellie :D
