Exercise can make us feel happier according to many research. People who are depressed are advised to exercise regularly to lift up depression. It is already proven and I myself will attest to it. Many depression specialists speculate that many people thrive when knowing they are in control of their mental state by exercising.
But how come there are many obese people who exercise regularly get depressed when they are not losing any weight?

it's probably because their efforts aren't working.
it must be depressing to try really hard and yet get no results.
i think it's hard to be obese in a society that's paranoid about being skinny. so the conspiracy between society and ineffective weight loss exercise could really take its toll on people.

Couldn't agree more on societies conspiracy factor - I'm thinking that becuase of the continual input of " you have to be thin to be worth something" is a travesty for anyone attempting to simply be healthy. Obese people I'm sure get frustrated and fed up and then want to give up because they aren't where they want to be...right now. Yes, they have to learn to eat correctly, limit the intake, not starve themselves and not punish themselves by completely taking away favorite things. There is way too much pressure placed on less than the perfect size 4 or 6.
Does that exist over the age of 30 for someone of average height? Hats off to those who just want to be healthier and those folks have my full support.

But if exercise can make people happy, it should contradict the depression of the obesity??

i think it is not exercise per se that makes people happy but the results that a person derives from it.
why do people exercise? for some, it may be to stay healthy, to remain in top form or to avoid getting fat.
But for the obese, it is definitely to lose weight. we are aware that 'fat' is not at all representative of what is supposedly beautiful, and those who are obese are trying to break away from this 'ugly' image. they want to lose weight, to be healthy, to gain self-confidence, and to be considered beautiful; and that's why they exercise.
maybe we can look at it from the cause.
why are people depressed in the first place?
in the case of the overweight, it may be because they are dissatisfied about themselves - because society thinks and makes them feel that they are unattractive. so they exercise to gain the approval of the general public, but if this doesn't work, then their problem remains unsolved. hence, their depression persists.

I just know that exercise can make people happy but never heard that it can cause people depressed. There are many factors can cause weight gaining, you can't blame on exercise just because not losing any weight. Exercise helps boost a person metabolism and losing weight but eating the right food in a right pattern is also crucial. Some people eat more after exercise because of losing a lot of energy, it will cause the body absorb more. You should allow some time (around 1 to 2 hours) to rest before you take your meal. Exercise should be a long term routine and we shouldn't expect to see any fast result. Hope you get to solve your problem.

It has been sais that an idle mind is devil's workshop. That is if there is lack of exercise, our mind as well as body get idle and this results in mental depression as well as physical lose of stamina. Only exercising regularly can make all these problems within control and safe limits. Among exercises, walking in the morning as well as gardening are the best exercises!
Thanks for this nice topic and wish you active physically and mentally with good exercises!!

Exercise itself is not the only solution to depression, but I will agree it certainly helps many people. As for 'large' people being depressed I think this is because they eat the wrong types of food and do not get the correct amount of vitamins and minerals from their food. Eating fatty food will obviously prevent you from losing weight no matter how much exercise you do each day.
Sadly it is a vicious circle for some obese people, they want to lose weight but they just dont know what the coreect types and amounts of food to eat, so no matter how hard they try they dont lose any body weight. This in turn leads them to eat food to try and chher themselves up, like comfort food.
A dietician is the best person to advise on the correct food to eat.

it is right that people do sometime get done it over, taking its toll in their body. If you sped 4-6 hrs in Gym then instead of having good body you are losing your health, and result in weakening of muscles and muscles pain, i think 1 - 1 1/2 hrs is alright

I think the reason why they become depressed is that they are frustrated because they are not seeing the results that they want to see. Some overweight people think "After all these exercise, I should have lost this much by now." They become frustrated and their patience becomes thinner and thinner as the days go by. Then they get depressed and turn to food to comfort them. It has become a vicious cycle. I think for their efforts to have a long-term effect, they have to work closely with a team of professionals to help them. Like a fitness instructor, nutritionist, dietician and physician. Especially if they ar morbidly obese. It's sometimes a hassle, not to mention expensive, to work with all those people that's why some obese people just try to lose weight on their own. But it's hard to be disciplined if there's no one looking over your shoulder or telling you what you should or shouldn't do. So, it's not only exercise that will get them to lose weight and depression. It's a combination of many things so that they will ultimately feel better about themselves.

I heard about that too. I am so depressed these days because of my boyfriend but the problem is i don't have time to exercise. I mean i do have time but i just can't exercise. I'm too lazy to do that.
Anyway, we all know that exercise is good for our health but people have a hard time to do it everyday.
Maybe i should really exercise as soon as possible. I don't like what i am feeling now. Think it's the only way to combat depression.

It is one of the natural ways to fight depression and it is already proven worldwide. I have read so many things about those because I have been in a hard situation. BUT the problem with depressed people is that they don't have enough energy and will to force themselves to exercise. SO if you can manage to do it then you will be on your way to become atleast a bit happier again little by little.

Maybe that is why they are depressed..because they are exercising and not losing weight. Or maybe there are other things going on in their life causing them to be depresssed. I used to exercise regularly and while it made me feel good, I was still somewhat stressed about other things going in my life.

You've raised a very valid point that obese people do not tend to lose eight despite regular exercise.Probably the intake of food is very rich which isn't easily lost in a workout.More than losing weight those who are depressed ought to feel content that there mental health has improved.Even small reduction in weight ought to be taken as a starting point and those factors which lead to weight loss should be continued as they might help in long term weight control.

I am optimistic with you. Exercise boost our mind and body and it is very helpful to manage depression. Sometimes some fat people become very hopeless while they are unable to loose their weight after exercise. In this case, they should be patient and continue their exercise.

Maybe they have different purposes.
Some people esercise to make their bodies comfortable and they don't care about losing fat. But someone else exercise only to lose fat, maybe they don't like exercise.
Then the problems appears, the first kind of people will happy because of exercise, and the other kind of people will happy because of losing fat. And it's not the same question.

if you also exercise is good for health and depression can be fought through physical activity, the issue is finding the appropriate discipline for everyone to enjoy and be happy when we do. The issue of obesity is another problem that tends to make people become depressed when they begin to do some sport on medical advice and do not get the expected results. Some are fat from eating, others for problems in metabolism, sedentary lifestyle and others to suffer from any of these problems cost them a lot to do physical activity takes a lot of willingness, energy, you have the pain, fatigue, and many do not endure all this, get depressed and end up deserting.
