Sometimes I see bands that are not emo get called emo. These bands aren't even in the style of music of emo and would not fit in the emo genre, but I see kids who like emo calling them "emo" bands. Why is that?

After thinking about it, I realized that most people who listen to emo are young kids who don't know much about music or the difference between different types of music. Whatever the reason, it's good to see people listening to good music. Maybe it will make listening to good music popular or something.

Unfortunately it is like that in the harcore music seen. People don't really know where to draw the line as to which genre certain bands fall. For instance during the eighties with the rise of the NWOBHM bands you had the two most popular genres which was speed- and thrash heavy metal. Metallica is a thrash band Slayer is a speed emtal band. The main difference was the speed the guys used to play at. Most poeple however didn't know this and confused the two genres.
Now with emo and punk you have the similarity that both genres wears make up and are anarchistic in their lyrics and music. This makes it easy for youngsters that don't punk is a 70's genre to confuse it with emo.
