Why do old punk bands and indie bands sometimes get called emo?

Sometimes I see bands that are not emo get called emo. These bands aren't even in the style of music of emo and would not fit in the emo genre, but I see kids who like emo calling them "emo" bands. Why is that?

Venomazoid I don't think he cannot scream anymore maybe they wants to change their genre for BMTH latest album just to make it more acceptable for people around, and maybe it'll help 'em gain more popularity I know they are amazing and the screams were changed But...
