.com, .web, .net, .ws, are what we call domain. For example, www.mylot.com is a domain, a name for website that actually makes us easier to access the website (normally it contains digits).
The end of the domain (e.g. .ws, .net, or .com) has meaning so we can understand what kind of website it is.
.org for example, means that the website is an organization. .com is a public website or a company, etc.
Well, but I haven't known about .ws though.

The different suffixes are generally used to show different purposes for a website. A .net is usually used by network companies (particularly ISPs), and a .ws for personal websites (not too sure about this as I've not heard of .ws until now). The most common though, is the .com which previously stood for companies but is the most common suffix now.
There's actually very little difference between the three, except perhaps for vanity's sake.
