The Security Guard Was Crying

Some people are unbelievably callous. I went into the bank this morning and the young security guard was fighting back tears. I now him quite well as he had come from the village where I used to live. So I asked him what was wrong. He told me that about two hours earlier he had learnt that his mother had died.
He said that the word had spread and people kept calling him on his personal phone to find out if the news was true and also some of his siblings called him as they lived off the Island.
He took the calls whilst remaining at his post and the Manager came and told him that if he took one more call then she would have him fired. He told her that his Mother had just died and she said that did not change anything.
So I took a deep breath before going upstairs to see the manager. He would not see me without an appointment so I spoke in a very loud voice to his assistant and said that the normal procedure would be to call the security company and get a replacement as ,good Lord, his mother had just died and he was still on duty.
And what is more, I said, someone had told me that they had heard the Manager threatening him to be fired if he took another phone call.
I was sure, I continued, that if the Manager's mother had died then he would not be at work for several days. I know the Manager heard me as I can be very loud and everyone stopped working to listen to me.
And what is more, I said, if no one at the Bank was calling the security company to explain the situation then I would make it my responsibility to call as well as sending an email to the Bank's Head Office to ask them was this their policy - to be so threatening to an employee whose mother had just died?
So - did you have a rant today?

I feel so badly for that poor security officer, and that manager was a real jerk! I am glad that you stood up for him and tried to help him out, especially since it doesn't seem like anyone else there that he worked with on a regular basis was going to try to help him out or stand up for him.
Years ago I also got a call delivering unexpected and very bad news while I was at work. After I got the phone call, I was pretty much just in a state of shock. I stayed at work for a while, but I wasn't really working. It was almost like if I just went about the day normally as if nothing happened, then it would somehow magically erase the call - I know it wasn't rational but I wasn't really thinking, either. Fortunately, my coworker heard my end of the call and figured out what had happened and told my boss. They all came over and offered support and helped me "get my bearings" before they let me drive home. In fact, they even offered to drive me home if I needed it, which as about fourty-five minutes away from where we worked.

Oh Cynthie oh how I love thy rants.
I had to share this one (as I do with several of your post) with my family. Thats what pomposity does to the common man. They have some sort of strength and position and figure that everyone else they are in charge of are nobodies.
I would love to know the outcome of this. Love the rant.

Nothing like a foreign accent or a really insistent person to get those people nervy. I really hope they follow through and deal accordingly with that manager. Id certainly like to know which of those banks in Ochi have such an inconsiderate manager.

Well I phoned the head office and because of my Brit accent they thought that I was calling from overseas and I got the personal email of the CEO. I received a response today that he would be investigating the matter. My second son is visiting the family tonight so I will know more by tomorrow. I just hate arrogance and pomposity. Who do they think they are to treat someone like this? I am brave when it comes to other people but when it comes to myself I am not brave

I just hate when people are not treated with respect. Another guard could have been there in less than 15 minutes to take over from this one. I dislike arrogance so much.

Some people are incredibly cold hearted, it would have taken someone about 10 mins to call and ask for a replacement, I hope they did call for a replacement. Well done on speaking up for him, hopefully the manager saw sense!

Cold blooded. He is a young man and his mother had not been sick. I did follow up with an email to one of the Director's at the Bank's head office. Totally callous.

Not today, but very recently. My autistic son was being given the run around by one of our federal programs that is supposed to help him. I got mad. When I see injustice I get mad. The first thing I think is how can I hurt them the worst? I called the area manager and said I was writing a letter of discrimination. He was put in his place and now every time we call do to something a completely different person calls me back and has taken care of everything. You did a great job.
Does that bank really want all of it's customers leave there seeing one of their staff sobbing due to employee abuse? I'd like to know how this turned out! What happened to "one love"?

Well, if you thin that I am bad when I see injustice - then I have to tell you that I have been known to turn into a rotweiler if one of my children were attacked. I sent an email to the CEO and if I do not hear from him today then I will send another email telling him that I am going public by writing letters to the daily newspapers.
One Love sometimes is diminished by arrogant people who abuse their authority. I will post of the results of the emails.

If you mean the guard then I have asked one of my sons to go to his home tonight. I did get an email from head office saying that they would do an investigation. Arrogant people are so horrible. I know as I work for one.

I am so proud to know you cynthiann! You stood up for this poor young man who was trying so hard to hold it together at work after being given such tragic news. I have no idea how some folks can be so harsh towards others and yet sleep at night! I am so relieved that there also are people like you who will show empathy for another and stick up for what is right. Good on you cynthiann!

After reading your post, I'm really enraged at what some scums out there do. How can the manager be this cold-blooded??? Just because she is the manager doesn't mean that she can abuse her scum authority and threaten people around. You did the right thing. Maybe you should also call the head of the bank and tell them to fire off this thing. Such people shouldn't even exist in the world.

I sent an email to the CEO of the bank and look forward to receiving a response. If not - then I will go public by writing to the newspapers. I have fought for social justice all of my life and will not stop now.

Yes. Well done! These types of people should be shamed to the inside of their bones man. She doesn't have a heart at all. It's better to shame her. I've a suggestion, make a Facebook page and broadcast about her wrongdoings to the public. That way is better. And if you are going to do that, support the young man and encourage him.

I empathize with you for feeling like that to the Manager. How so unkindhearted she is and to think that she's a woman. We as women, are generally soft yet that Manager seemed to be a passive one.
I admire you for standing up for the security guard! Well done !

I just said to Dawn that I jump in the deep end for other people but do not stick up for myself with him - scared of losing job. He just called me and it is after 9 pm for an update of work. I am a coward when it comes to him.

cynthiann,
You really deserve the credit here for standing up to some chauvinistic individual who just forget that they are human as well.
I wonder if that security guard friend of yours had done what he should when he received his tragic news like inform his superior, office or even that lousy bank manager where he worked. At least, the relevant people will be looking to replace his shift to attend to his compassionate predicament.
I suppose he could be overwhelmed with shock as to what to do and those incoming calls were just collateral damage. However, I just do not understand why in the world you need an appointment to see the bank manager on duty. It is just out of this world and absolutely absurd to me. Try carrying a suitcase of money and see if you still need an appointment to speak to him.
I have to hand it to this bank but I suppose that is how some people can be - downright callous!

That was so kind of you.
How could the Manager be so Inhuman?
If everybody of us can do a little bit for the sake of simply being Human, things shall be much brighter.
Great job, dear friend. Its because of people like you the Sun still agrees to shine everyday.
I am halfway through my day at the office and blowing smoke with everything disorderly around me ranting is at the top of my to-do list!

A security guard has problems and feelings just like everyone else. A security guard is a human being after all. We see a security guard as a show of force and strength to protect us. We don't think about the trials they go through as well.

It is not as if he was an armed guard - just someone in the bank watching what was going on. He should have been relieved and sent home.

Hi sweetie.
What kind of idiots will that be then?
I mean really.
Is it only bosses and managers who have families and life's?
I surely hope they got your point.
I cannot believe you get people like that.
I'm too tired to rant today.
Maybe tomorrow, okay.
