Is it? Can you do nothing on the computer when it has no internet connection? Iv'e experienced loss of internet connection for 2 days (the phone company said there was a fault line or something). During that period I didn't even turn on my computer, since i found that there was nothing to do with it if there's no internet. Since I just go to ptc sites or blog- which requires the net. So, what do you think? Is a computer useless without internet?

Yes, the uses are really limited if the computer has no internet connection.. If you are a student, especially in college or a businessman; an internet connection is a must to make lots of things easier.

These days we seem to be so dependent on the Internet that a computer without it seems boring and useless!
Actually, it very much depends what you are using it for. Before I had the Internet, I was using the computer for word processing, spreadsheets and database work. I used to enjoy using DBase and writing programs in it (I was doing a Computer Studies course at the time and spent hours on my coursework).
When I first encountered the Internet, it was mainly bulletin boards and newsgroups which were useful to me. The Web browser had yet to be invented (I seem to recall) and you had to use Telnet software to access stuff online.
Gradually, over the years, I have become more dependent on the Internet than I would really like to be. These days I spend most of my time online and feel rather lost when, occasionally, I don't have access - even if it's just for a few minutes checking my email!

When I did my computer studies course, there was no such thing as the Internet (and that wasn't so very long ago - I graduated in 1990). How things have changed in just 15 years!

Yeah, I can't even imagine what would people invent in 15 more years...maybe personal computers and the internet may become obsolete in the future..

Hi dear,
In fact internet usage is one among the many uses. Computers have so many other important and so much of different uses. Out of which internet usage is just one requirement. Basically, those who do all the accounting and programming and computer related works are highly complex and which will not fit in our minds. Such a complex uses are there with computers.
In our life, computer is using for all works and those who are not using four such jobs, uses or accessing the internet via computer. But please don’t consider without internet computer is useless. If computer is not here, there is no internet. Please think what I mean.
Thank-s

Hi dear,
Yes, before the invention of internet also we were used computer in large uses. After the introduction of internet, things become more easier, convenient, time saving and in short, life become so easier and profitable. Just like the ‘use’ there are a lot of ‘misuse’ also happening around. But once these three facilities – mobile phone, internet and TV, life easily moved to globalised and everything accessable on the tip of the finger.
Thank-s

Hi stanley,
They say necessity is the mother of all invention. I am not really a computer genius, just your next-door neighbor running on pure desperation just to survive, and I realized I have done more than just surviving, I also learned a lot of things in the process.
Well, I could not say otherwise. Your discussion has sparked a new insight on my aging machine and I realized I have not been kind to her. I have considered upgrading its system to make it go online but what I did is to divert the funds it generated to other things, like buying a new watch and other house implements.
I should be more kind to that piece of junk, right?

Yes, you can consider it as a junk but it has served you monetarily.Upgrading her will be a wise idea but as you have said you have priorities that need to be addressed first so that can wait.Anyway, I hope she's still as reliable as before in helping you n your job.And the net, I guess is great add-on to computers for the wider range and faster results it provides.thanks again bro.

Hi stanley,
"How do you that anyway?" Re on your inquiry, maybe it refers to my money-making rackets on my offline stone-age computer, here goes.
The very first thing I did when I acquired the machine is to accept encoding jobs for students. It's not much, just typing their research draft and/or correcting them at a very nominal fee (10-15 cents per page). I still do it from time to time and in peak seasons when the term ends, when students panic and go for quick projects to have their clearances signed. My computer's daily diet, though, is to churn out page after page of document for all types of needs for all types of clients.
Then I got this contract from an NGO on Natural Resource Management survey. I was a part of the team charged with the GPS for their GIS mapping, I used my personal computer to plot all the coordinates and prepare the derived maps for printing (the subcontractor still owed me USD165 for that). And yes, that old machine can still load GlobalMapper v.11 in just three seconds flat. It calculates coordinates/scales, plot fields, generate/modify maps, measure line and areas in any shape, faster than you can say "08 degrees, 20 minutes, 16.25 seconds North, 124 degrees, 35 minutes, 30.91 seconds East."
One big break came just recently when I designed and published a souvernir program for a local church on their fund raising campaign. I used Correl x3 to lay out the designs and converted them to PDF files for printing on an Epson T10 with CISS. My computer handled that with flying colors except when the graphics became too heavy so I have to scale them down to 90-100 dpi. The Epson printer went on to semi retirement after printing 30,000 pages, 8x13 inches, grade 120 bond paper. Anyway, I got USD1500 for that contract.
I have an incoming project just like the last one and that dinosaur of an offline eMachine is still rearing to handle it.
I have considered online jobs for sometime now but I still haven't got the real chance to get some serious income from it, maybe in the future, I hope.

oh, what a job you have or shall we say part time job coz' its not regular I guess but thats a lot of dough, man.I hope I can be like you too, but the problem is I'm not a computer genius like you.I only know basics and most of the time I asked my daughters for help,So without the net you still have lots of work in which you can earn thru your computer. So mylot can wait if your still busy with part time jobs.thanks again and more earnings throughout the year.

Hello stanly,
Its not cool to say useless because it was invented long ago before internet connection begun. All offices, establishments at all kind benefited from it. Schools and students as well. I got internet connection in my office long time ago but i just used it when ever i need some information beneficial to my works and personal matters. I do all my works in my computer from writing letters, reports, finance matters, everything without having connected from the internet server. During free time i just play games and feel contented with it. But since i started into chatting and met people who are active in online jobs, they introduced me to a lot of these stuff including mylot. From then on, i cant live a day without opening my internet connection.

That's right. Computer was invented way before internet took the stage. With internet we have found a new meaning of entertainment and education. As the days went by internet become indispensable. But originally, the computer was meant to serve mathematicians and businessmen. Now everybody knows how to execute complicated programs. The main contribution of computing is making tedious tasks automated. So there is really no such field where computers can't help, with or without internet.

There are countless things to do with a computer without Internet. There are many many software applications that you can use for all sorts of things from changing details in photos to learning to type. There are heaps of word processing projects you can do. You can write stories. I spend time organising my photos but I don't do a very good job of it...there are many projects I could use to organise my photos.

As if we are being con by these technology experts if I may say, because they introduced their invention little by little, to earn more or they really don't know what comes next. Before we need it only for typing documents, listening to music, watching videos, games and others now with the net its more exciting.thansk

yeah, I guess its also business.Every year newer technologies were being introduced so if you are a trend setter you must have it to be in.Computers are not useless because first they were invented for the sole purpose of helping us to lessen our wwork loads to be completed in lesser time.and with the net its more wider in scope.thanks

My computer has gone down for weeks at a time and that is when I explored all the other programs on my computer. I did some well need correspondence and printed off the letters and sent them by regular mail. I typed up a bunch of my recipes to post when I got back online. I started getting my taxes together using another program that does not need the internet. There are games that came with the computer that I could play. All in all I got alot done with out the Internet.

computers were introduced for the sole purpose of lightening our loads of work.lots of tasks that can be done in one gadget.I guess when inventors who conceptualized this gadget had no slightest idea that it must have internet connection for it to function more fully, because at that time they are think only of its marketability.not useless but a bit boring i guess.thanks

No, I don't thinks so. If there is no internet, we can use computer to make some document work, or water video in computer, or just learn something, such as computer sofeware, office sofeware using, etc.. Computer is also use for work, and entertainment, not for internet only.

Hey buddy,
You still can do a lot of things with the computer without connecting to the internet.
May be many people just know about watching the online movies, chat, email, surfing website and other matters with online.
Once the internet line is down, they will really upset with their computer.
Without internet, you can watch movies with CD or DVD, type and prepare documents, listen to music with CD or DVD, play games and son on.
Computer is really a powerful machine.

I think it's still useful. You can play games on it, write papers, open and update spreadsheets for example. Although you would need to print your papers instead of emailing them like before. I'm sure there's other stuff I'm forgetting, but it's still useful. You can make presentations too.

I wouldn't say that a computer is useless without an internet connection, it would just be a shame if it didn't have one.
I write a lot on my wordprocessor on my computer, I store all my music and photograhs, I can edit my home videos on computer, play games if I want to and lots more without having to even open my browser.
I wouldn't like to be without that connection, but if I didn't have it, I would still be using my computer quite a lot. I had a computer I used long before the Internet came into people's homes and thought it was a great thing to own then. _Derek
