Why do you give Christmas presents to your boss and not to your co-workers?

I work at two companies and noticed that the bosses always get Christmas presents from their underlings but the underlings don't give Christmas presents to one another. Or if ever, the bosses still get the better ones (like Parker pens, brand name wallets, gift cards, etc.), while the underlings would only give one another a Christmas card or a Reese's peanut butter cup or none at all. Could somebody give a logical explanation?

Hi Crimson, Lol... They do it so many times around and I never gave this a thought Ok, this section of the employees is called - PR or you can term that as Lobbying too. Need to catch your boss's attention or be in good books - do something good for him / her and get noticed. I never did gift anything to my bosses except my work and the good part was that I was paid for that and I used to spend some of this "payments" on my colleagues. It is better (in my opinion) to make the work environment cordial and friendly rather than the other way - if you start gifting the boss, colleagues would start to see you differently and more problems start flooding in than the solutions. Cheers, theSids.

Hi thesids, I have to agree with you the most as the co-workers are the ones to see us through the heavy tasks.

I can only understand it as being a suck-up. LOL. HOWEVER I guess it depends on the boss. I got my old store manager/boss a Christmas gift - like a $20 gift card to Target, but that's because we became good buddies and I really liked her and liked working with her, it wasn't because i was trying to get any brownie points with her or anything like that. That would be pretty silly, as presents do not buy promotions! LOL

i think the reason is very simple... they just want to look good in front of their boss and leave a good impression so that they can have a smoother career... but to be honest with you, i never do it with my boss in the last 6 years i am working because i just don't like this method... take care and have a nice day...

Hi CrimsonRain, I really don't know. Where I work it is the same way. We all take up a collection to get the boss a gift certificate to a restraunt that we know he loves. I personally think it's kind of dumb but I go along with it just to not cause waves. He has everything and our little 30.00 gift certificateis nothing to him, I'm sure except maybe the thought. He is an amazing boss and well worth it. He does give all of us a very nice bonus and he takes us out to dinner for xmas. I think or I would hope that it is the gesture that maybe would mean something to him.

well,my friend ,in my company ,the most important reason is the guy wanna get promoted in order to get more money and bonus at the end of year.let's analyse the reason, boss also are hunman being and they are lived in more pressure setting than employees or underlings, and also they are more hunger to earn money, maybe the boss need someone to support himself or herself to operate or manage company,at the same time for employee ,more changce and bones the guy get for return.maybe we can call it win-win.

Hi CrimsonRain, In my opinion that would be so wrong as I would think the co-workers are the one that bailed us through the year, helping and assisting with so many urgent tasks. I can only come up with what thesids says above that they are trying too look good and to me that is so wrong as the co-workers are the ones that should be shown the appreciation.

We all pitch in for a single gift to the boss for Christmas, Boss's Day, and his birthday. He gives things to us throughout the year and helps us more than anyone could expect, so we give these gifts as a thank you. Some of our employees buy each other some gifts as well, but that is their own choice. I know that I personally cannot afford to participate in gift exchanges with all of my coworkers.

well, despite the fact that i have not worked much, i can make an educated guess. i think it is just because the people who work under the boss are just trying to kiss up to them so they can maybe get promoted. the other coworkers can't do much to get each other promoted so they just forget about them. it's all about trying to help yourself in the work world (well really in the world in general). people just want to get ahead in life and sometimes that means throwing a few dollars (or whatever) out there to get to where they wanna go.

Could be, they feel like family instead of boss/associate? Or maybe they are better friends than other co-workers? Maybe the boss treats them better than the co-workers? I like the idea of feeling like "family." as the best answer.

Underlings by nature need to please their bosses, so buying their bosses good presents is just one of the ways in which they have to do.But if they give the coworkers presents not as good as bosses',they will lose harmonious relationship with coworkers, and be unalble to work smoothly.A capable underling needs establish good relationship with not only bosses but coworkers. They can give their bosses and coworkers presents that have difference in meanings but not prices.

Maybe they wanna get promoted that's why they give presents to their boss instead of their co-workers. That's the main motive I can speculate but maybe they have other motives. Who knows, maybe they just like their bosses that's why they do that and maybe they hate their co-workers.

Probably because you want your boss to increase your salary. You want your boss to be nicest with you, and you try to be nice to the person that controls how many you earn. Also you give presents to your boss because that's the person that provides you the livelihood.
