How do you cope with really bad pain?

Awhile back, I was in an accident
where something fell on me,
nearly crushing my windpipe
so now it's hard to breath sometimes.
All this month it's been bothering me
really bad, pain wise.
Mostly cause of the cold.
The cold makes my throat swell and that
brings on the pain. It's been a nightmare.
I've tried every kind of pain medication over
the counter to relieve the pain, but somedays
I can hardly bear it.
But, today, I find myself in pain
at the hip.
I think it's just a sign of getting older.
I'm sitting too much and need to be more active.
So, now I am wondering what you do for
aches and pains.
Do you take medicine, take a hot bath,
talk to a friend, go to sleep?
I could really use some suggestions
on dealing with the increased aches and pains
that are coming my way lately.

beauty queen if you are getting arthritis it could come to severe arthritis which can only be helped by a doctor. If I did not take tramadol twice a day I would be unable to walk at all as I have severe arthritis. over the counter pills just will not do it. the cost of your visit will be worth it as over the counter pills do not reach the
pain at all. Arthritis can be helped but you must see a qualified physician first to get the help.

Thanks Hatley for that information.
With all the aches and pains recently,
I just thought it might be a sign
of getting older.
It could be arthritis though.
That thought had not really occurred to me.
I might have casually considered the
possibility.
But, it just seemed like it could be
so far off.
I will have it checked out as a possibility
by a doctor.
Thanks for your help again.

When I hurt really bad I kow its going to rain but for me I quit
hurting once it rains.I know severe arthritis can be held at bay
but you must get prescription strentgh medication and only your'doc tor can do that for you.

Even though I am only 21 I experienced a great share of unpleasantries and pain. My toe-nails were growing to the sides deep into the flesh causing swelling and strong pain with every step (lived with swelled toe for more than six months in a row before I visited surgeon), I also hurt the bottom side of one foot once. It did not heal for over half a year and hurt with each step too. Also, I got a problem with a tooth once when I spent two days in very strong pain. Well, I experienced many more painful events, many falls, hits, etc. and I have some problems with legs that cause extreme pain after a while of walking.
So far, ignoring the pain and thinking of other things helps me the most. If there is a pain, I think of things I need or want to do or people I know. Also, I write articles that I publish on the web. So, I often write an article in my mind or lead a debate with myself (that usually leads to an article) inside my mind. This takes the pain out of my mind and it works most of the time. Anyway, I do not remember ever taking a medication to relieve a pain, at least not other than usual anaesthetic before surgery or in dentists.

That is a brilliant idea!
I'm a writer too and had not thought
to write articles when pain hits me.
Thinking about it now, writing does
help get my mind off my worries and pain
is a big worry.
I am having more and more pain in my
body now that I'm in my late thirties.
It's just a sign of getting older;
the body breaks down.
But, as you mentioned, you are a young person
and have much pain too.
Pain in the feet is always the worst,
cause it makes it hard to walk and get where
you need to go.
Please post a link on your Mylot profile
to your articles so that I might read them.
I did not see a link on your profile.
It would be nice to read what others have written.
Thanks for being the first person to respond.
Your help has been very valuable to me.

Most people have told you that your first step is to see your doctor so you know what kind of pain you are dealing with. I do know that walking, etc. helps relieve arthritis pain. Some recent studies indicate calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D3 along with fish oil is helpful. Your doctor will tell you if your D is low by doing blood tests.

About the hip pain, you have pretty well nailed it. You need to move more. I do too. For your throat I would sip hot liquids all the time when it is cold. Some really nice herbal teas. Tea made with white willow bark is a pain reliever. I would be talking to the doctor if the pain is increasing, as well. Maybe a neck warmer of some kind on the outside would help as well. I used to take a lot of over the counter stuff, then I had my foot surgery and I took a prescription pain reliever for awhile. I have had some digestive problems ever since. That, and constipation. I hardly ever take any kind of a pain reliever now. I do take my vitamins and minerals. Magnesium helps relax muscles and ginger relieves pain.

Super! Some really good, new advice.
I didn't know the part about magnesium or ginger.
And, I hadn't thought about using a heated neck warmer.
That's why I was looking for someone else's point of
view on the issue.
I'm kind of with you on the pain reliever front.
I take Excedrin but don't think it's really effective.
Also, I'm worried about an overdose cause it
contains acetaminophen. At least, I'm pretty sure it does.
And, there's all kinds of reports of overdose with that,
especially for people taking multiple medications.
Acetaminophen seems to be in everything these days.
Thanks for your advice.
Very much appreciated.

Each day it's a different method for me. When it's pain that keeps me from getting up and walking, I take pain medicine. When it's really bad, but I can still get around, I'll try to contact people. I'll go see if I can help my dad with my mom, or I'll call my Grandma. Or I'll sit down and write a letter to someone who I think needs encouragement. And then on other days, I'll simply sit down and read. Every day requires a different method to deal. I hope your pain can be lessened.

I think I'd go to the emergency room if I were in that kind of pain. If not that then I'd go see my doctor. Life's too short as it is and to live with that kind of pain makes it all the more shorter. I had a lot of shoulder and hip pain at one time and saw my doctor which he prescribed flexeril and naproxen which I consider HEAVEN sent because it worked! I thought I'd never see the day I'd be without pain but now I am. Now it does come back every now and then and all I have to do is take a one of each of those meds and I'm back again. When I first got the two, I had to take it for about a week or two before it really went away and now it's on an "as needed" basis.
When I sprained my ankle, I could tell when it was going to rain for years after it healed. I can't anymore though but by golly, I could be the weather forecaster and it was so painful back then.

I am finding more aches and pains as I grow older. I think I have arthritis in my hands and it gives me tons of trouble. My hip hurts from a hiking accident too. When I started running I hurt a lot and now things don't seem to hurt as much as they used to. But sometimes when a cold front comes through I am miserable. That's when I pull out my trusty heating pad! i actually have two - since you never know what all may hurt all at the same time!

Yeah, and OTC's can have some bad effects if taken over long periods of time too! They are not as safe as we think they are!

I am sorry to hear of your accident and that you are not feeling so great as a result.
Hopefully you have seen a doctor to get a good check over.
I have problems with Chronic pain and sometimes most debilitating.
Hot baths help me tremendously. Stretching and exercise but hot baths also. Lowering stressors, relaxing and last but not least I am a faithful user of Ibprophen. Over the counter, not a prescription but prescribed, I find that if I take 400 mg's when I am in dyer pain, I am good within 1/2 hour. It is what works for me.
Occasionally, I will try an Asprin if the pain is bothersome but not major.
I think relaxation would be the best.
I am not a doctor though and would recommend that you get in to see one.
Wishing you well soon!

Personally, I try to sleep off aqny pain but if you can't, I would suggest a heat pack or hot water bottle...heat usually helps pain - will keep you warm too seeing as you are in winter. I hope this helps you.

Yoga will be a better option... If modern medicine is not working for a certain extent u have to concentrate on yoga and be silent.. Silence is the main perception of getting relived from pain.
I have been very much affected by this winter and cold and i'm very young to go for Yoga, so i take some sort of sprays to get relieved from the pain..
If u are having physical pain, it will never go if you take a hot bath or talk to a friend, the pain has occurred it has to be treated, so take medicines...

Hi there,
Doctors say taking too much of pain killer tablets or injection is bad but when you are suffering like anything what else could you do?
Whenver I have some pain problem I get a painkiller injection.
Now since I do not know the condition of your wound or injury it is better to see a competent doctor and sort out the issue.

I use a TENS machine. They are good for shoulder pain. I have tendonitis in my ankle and shoulder but not so good for the pain in my ankle.
I use glucosamine patches on my ankle which seem to dampen it down a bit but don't stay on very long and I take fish oil which I think helps a bit and is meant to reduce inflammation.
If it is rally bad then I'll take an Anadin liquid fast but I don't like taking pain killers if I can help it.

I'm sorry to hear about your accident. Really bad pain sucks big time. I have Thoracic Scoliosis and there are days when I just can't move. It hurts too much to stand, sit and even to lie down. I had to be rushed to the emergency room at some point so I can be shot with an intramuscular pain reliever.
You're right about the cold. It definitely aggravates the pain. And while a hot bath does help relieve it, I found that having a hot compress applied to the area in question gives more lang lasting relief.
If all else fails, I get a prescription of Tramadol from my doctor or even Percocet. These are really strong pain medications and can be habit forming. And you eventually become immune to them, making it useless to counter your pain sooner or later. So it's advisable to use it in moderation and only for acute bouts of pain.
