Were you able to achieve your childhood dream?

Children are natural dreamers. As I've seen in television, in pageants and contests for little boys and girls, they would always be asked "What do you want to become when you grow up?" I have to say majority of them would answer "I want to be a doctor" or "I want to be an engineer". Their answers sound tailored, but maybe not too. It's possible that at their age, they already have an idea of what to aim for in the future. I used to dream of becoming an astronaut. After a while, I said I wanted to become a nurse because I wanted to be like my mom. After that, I dreamed of becoming a truck driver. Yes, a truck driver. I have already forgotten why. By early high school, I wanted to become a professional pianist. 13 years later, I now have an MD attached to my name. How about you? Did you turn out to be what you dreamed of as a kid? Or did life take a different turn and brought you elsewhere?

I remember that my first dream was to be a princess. Then a painter, then fashion designer, then doctor, then police officer but I ended up studying to be an English teacher and working as a waitress. Now I have a slightly better job in the entertainment industry and my dream is to start my own business someday. But I'd like to teach for a while first.

Hello KaycharmedMD,
when we are kids, there is so much for the life we don't know. This is why we have impulsive decisions and wishes, we don't think so much, because we don't know so much. When we grow up, we understand how colored is the world and how each of us can choose one direction and that's when we get confused of all that diversity.
I don't remember my childhood dreams, because i changed them too much. Everything new was interesting for a while, before the next new thing comes. That's normal and it's the way we grow up. But i really think that our wishes are very important for us because they motivate us to discover the world step by step.

It's true, kids are dreamers. I wanted to be an astronaut aged 13. Next thing I can remember wanting to be is an actor, in my teens. I went to acting school in my early '20s, but as might be expected it's a hard life, as it's so competitive, and you need to exude confidence. I was very talented, with a natural onstage ability, and many gifts, including good looks; a fine voice and great presence. I was also had a natural ability to get on with people. I looked quite close to success from the get-go; but I decided to set off on a second career, which would take many years of study including a degree. I spent four years on a degree; and embarked on a fifth year of study, before becoming restless and returning to acting, show biz, entertainment, music. A bad, stupid move, because it sabotaged my second career, and I was older. I did well in acting for a while, but I wasn't making money. So then I did some teaching for a while, which I loved so much; and acting was put on the back burner. But I returned yet again; and did OK; got some praise. I'm still officially an actor. But my dream was never really achieved sadly. It's too late now. Not to act. But I don't have the same enthusiasm for life; I'm reclusive. I like peace and quiet. But reasonably content most of the time; and I have my Christian faith which is more important than any success to me. But it hurts terribly sometimes to know I had so much...but didn't make the best of it. If you have a dream...for goodness sake...don't neglect it! Follow that dream!

As a little girl, I always wanted to be a Mom. I also wanted to be a nurse. I became a Mom x6, but decided nursing was not something that I wanted to do. I became a teacher instead. I have also always wanted to be a good wife to some good man, so I am still working on that one.

Not yet. But i'm on my way. i have pursued the course of my choice, still a long way to go.
I have to practice and get better in my field. Then only i'll be able to achieve my childhood dream. There are times when i think my dream isn't true, its stupid or things aren't going to be that way.
Bad times sometimes make me feel like my dream aim isn't good enough for me anymore, just cous i'm slow getting there. But i wish someday i'll get there.
I just have to believe.

I actually do think that I got exactly what I dreamed for even if it wasn't what I imagined it would be. I remember as a kid that I always always wanted to be independent of my parents. I dreamed of a life of living on my own and not having to answer to anyone and to be able to do what I wanted when I wanted to. Of course, I also wanted a husband and kids. Well, I got the kids but the marriage didn't work out so well. I do date but I'm so dam independent that most men get scared off by it or maybe I just scare them off because I really can't deal with the ones that want to "help me" or "take care of me". Either way, I guess I got what I set out for. I'm happy so it's all good.

I had different dreams when I was a child. For many years I wanted to become a teacher. I thought that it would be very interesting to teach Danish, because I have always been very interested in literature. I also thought that it would be interesting to teach others to write Danish. After a while I changed my mind, I loved books and I spent a lot of time at the library, so I decided that I wanted to become a librarian. A few years later I changed my mind again abd decided that I would like to become a journalist, because I loved writing.
Today I am an adult and I am not a teacher, a librarian or a journalist, but I still love reading and I write poems and short stories....

Hi, Kay.:)
I guess, it'd be the latter. As a child I did not dream of big things. I did not even dream of becoming anything. Sadly, but though being professional runs in my family's blood but I was confused of what I wanted to be. I was just lucky that at least I am smart enough to get into a good university to study college but then again, I wasn't smart enough because I ended up taking a course that I realized I do not like.
Now that I am older, I still don't know what I want in my life.
I believe that proper exposure to things will help a child decide what he/she wants for herself in the future. It'll easier for parents, too, to influence their children when the latter are well exposed to a certain profession or life. Good parenting and environment are factors that will soon define a child's future.:)
You seem so young and yet you already are a doctor. Kudos to you, dear.

Dreamed of becoming for every child may not be possible because of future situations. It is very rare for children to become what they dream.

The very first dream that I remember having as a child was to become a mother and I can honestly say that I have accomplished that dream. I'm the mother to two beautiful little girls and currently pregnant with my last child. This seems to be a normal dream for many girls as they are growing up, along with becoming a wife to complete her family status. I'm currently working on this dream and plan to marry my fiancée in March.
My occupational dream was to become a Social Worker because I always wanted to find a solution that fits everyone. As I grew older, the dream become more specific and I wanted to specialize in adoption/foster care cases. When I become a mother, I had to get a job to support my family which brought me into the direct care field. After two children, I've finally started my classes to work towards my degree in Psychology and I plan to continue on to get my Social Work degree!
So, the answer to your question: I've had a few detours throughout my life but I am finally on the path to my dream goal!

Since i was a kid i really dreamed to become a teacher someday. I really admire my teacher before in elementary because she is s o good and very gentle to us.I Really promised to myself that I want to become like her. Until such time that my teacher in elementary let us wrote something our dreams in life.I always believe that i will be a teacher.
Fortunately i really turned out to be what i am now,an elementary teacher for almost 4 years.I never regret being one because this is my craft teaching kids and molding them in my own little way.
