How many hours of sleep is enough? Is 6 hours OK?

I only sleep for 6 hours a day but I know the recommended number of hours is 8, right?(correct me if I'm wrong.) Anyway, I feel refreshed already when I sleep for that short amount of time and I never feel sleepy the rest of the day.
My question is, is this considered healthy or am I slowly killing myself for not getting the complete 8 hours of sleep required?

Good day inkyuboz,
Everyone is different and needs different amounts of sleep. If you feel good and don't feel sleepy during the day then you are getting enough, in my opinion. I am a terrible sleeper myself and rarely do I get 6 hours of solid sleep. I would be very happy if I got 6 hours of solid sleep.
I wake up every hour or more often. I have been this way all of my life. The only times I have slept more than an hour at a time is when I have been in the hospital with surgeries. I am always tired. I never get enough sleep. I feel sleepy all of the time. My doctor says the only thing I can do is take pills and I don't want to do that, they can be addictive.
So I say if you aren't sleepy during the day then you are getting enough sleep for you so don't worry about it.
Cheers and happy mylotting my friend ,
chris

Different age have different time table for sleep. Children should sleep more then 6 hours it could be at least 8 hours. But for young people 6 hours is enough.
And i think you are not child so for you 6 hours sleep is good and enough for your health. 8 hours is more for you to sleep is 6 hours is perfect and if you are more then 40 years then you can sleep only 4-5 hours and it's enough for you.
Good luck!

I think 8 hours of sleep is good for a day. For me 6 hours of sleep is not enough for a day.

If I recall correctly, the amount of sleep that people who are adults should get each night is between 6 and 8 hours. When I was in college I found that if I only slept for six hours a day I was a little bit lethargic by the end of the day. So, I finally realized that for my body, I needed to have about 7.5 hours of sleep. I think as long as you are sleeping through complete sleep cycles (a sleep cycle is typically 90 minutes) and you don't feel tired throughout the day then you are probably okay.

Different people have different sleep pattern. There are some people that can't sleep longer no matter how tired or exhausted they might be. For many, 8 hours is considered to be recommended amount of sleep. I can't really understand people that sleep longer unless if you are a baby or a toddler or you're a kid.
You know how you feel. Are 6 hours actually enough for you? Do you get tired when you're doing something? Whether it is healthy or not depends on your lifestyle too.

I also sleep for 6 hrs only and I am healthy as you are.I don't think that 8 hrs sleep alone is good. Many may sleep for 8 hrs.It also depends upon one's constitution. Some sleep for even 10 hrs and that is a different matter. I feel that if one is comfortable and with good health the number of hrs of sleep does not matter much..

If you feel refreshed, alert and not tired during the day, then you're probably fine. 8 hours is mostly a guideline. Some people will need more and some will need less. Sometimes you need less or more depending on your health. However, they say if you're not sleeping due to stress or too much caffeine, then that would take a toll on your body.

We are all different so get the sleep you need so that you can function. Sounds like you are doing fine? You need artificial stimulants like coffee or sodas or sugar to get you going and keep you going all day? if not, then you are doing fine!

It totally depends on you body and how you feel after waking up. As you have mentioned that you feel refreshed and don't feel sleepy the rest of the day, it's ok for you to sleep for 6 hours. I also used to sleep for 5-6 hrs when I was a student. But now I sleep for 8 hrs a day. I have not noticed any difference so far.

I give myself room for 8 hours of sleep. Sometimes I sleep 5. On the weekends I've slept 10 sometimes. When I was your age I could sleep 8 consistently, sometimes more. You will notice the older you get the less sleep you'll need.
Drs go for 24 hours in the ER at times. They cram for tests all night long in school. The very people who are telling us what is healthiest for us are............

It is different with each person. I was doing ok on 4-6 hours of sleep a night. Lately though I have been sleeping 7-8 hours a night and I have to admit that I feel a lot better. I do remember the days when 2-3 hours were enough but that was years ago. I am happy with my new sleep pattern.

Everyone is different. I think 6 hours is fine. That's the amount of time I would get in high school even though you're supposed to get 12 hours as an adolescent. I hate when I wake up after only 5 hours of sleep and can't get back to sleep. I sleep between 5-9 hours a night, typically at the lower end. Sometimes I take sleeping pills for insomnia because I'm a night owl. I've been pretty good about sleeping for the past week and haven't been taking any naps, which is great because school has started again and I really can't afford to nap. I used to take naps almost every day at home and really didn't like it because then it was difficult to sleep at night.

i think 6 hours is not enough... 8 hours is the ideal number of hours of sleep to keep our body healthy and in a good shape... but i am also hardly having 8 hours of sleep everyday... i try to get at least 7 hours of sleep if i can't get 8... take care and have a nice day...

I regularly take 6 hours sleep and i think its enough for you to relax your body. I think its all in our own control and we can adjust as we wish. Dont be a slave of your desires but develop your lifestyle as you want to be.

I sleep on average 6 hours a night and sometimes I sleep less. I have been this way for many years and I was worried to at one time. Then I found out that many great men and women like Winston Churchill and later Magarert Thatcher slept few just a few hours too. So I guit worrying about it and apart from when I have a medical problem, I always feel OK. I think that when the body needs it, I will sleep. _Derek

Don't worry! The necessary hours of sleep in the night depend on each person and on the age. Generally children need more hours than adults. Older people need less hours. But there are people who always needed less hours of sleep in their life to feel refreshed. The important thing about sleep is to go to bed when you feel sleepy and to wake up when the first awakening takes place. To stay in bed and sleep more than necessary is an unhealthy habit. Everybody's organism will tell the person how much to sleep in order to be refreshed. A good rule is: sleep early and wake up early. This way the day is much longer!

I don't feel quite good when i sleep less than six (6) hours a day. I have been a late sleeper ever since but I became very tiresome, helpless and stressed. So I started the year right by adjusting my sleeping habit bit by bit. I usually sleep around 12:30am to 1:00am. Now, I try to sleep as early as 10:30pm. But my body is still adjusting, when I go to bed I fall asleep between 11:30pm to 12am. I wake up around 5:30 am to 6:00 am in the morning so I have atleast 6 hours of sleep and I feel much better with it.

No you are not slowly killing yourself. Sleep varies upon different people. I am the same way I sleep 6 hours and I feel refreshed. I tried sleeping for 8 hours one day and I felt too sleeply/ drowsy. As we mature and get older some people are use to less amount of sleep. An example would be, for instance would is a college student or a worker with long hours of work. People adapt to changes. If you feel refreshed then you are fine and you don't have to worry, but if you notice that you feel weak/tired then you have to start sleeping more to be energized.
