Question for those of you with a sewing machine!

I invested in a sewing machine a few months ago and am finally getting around to learning how to use it. I must first purchase a table of some sort to keep my machine on. I don't want to spend too much. I've seen some sewing tables go for hundreds of dollars! I can't afford to invest that much into one right now. So my question is, what do you store your sewing machine on? I'd like to both store and sew on the table/stand I decide to purchase.

I'm lucky enough to own a sewing machine cabinet which we found at an auction. You can store your sewing machine almost anywhere, but you need a surface that's low enough to be comfortable, lower than a kitchen table, if you're going to use it for more than a few minutes at a time. You might look at a sewing machine store to see if they have something inexpensive there.

I've heard height is important. Thanks!

because sewing machines should be a bit lower than a desk or kitchen table, I have mine on a board set over a couple of file cabinets. I have used it on a small table that folds up (but not like a card table). I have used it on the kitchen table in the past before I got anything set up. It really depends on if you really want a sewing table you can drop it into, and you could probably find one used someplace if you looked.

Wish I could help you Jenn but I don't own a sewing machine, never have and probably never will! lol You might want to try to go to Goodwill and see if they have any used ones for sale. Keep your eyes open on Craigslist too. I know you like that site... and the movie! ;) Good luck in your search!

I know some people just use a little coffee table or end table. I have a sewing machine but it's up in the attic since I don't like to sew.

My Mom has her sewing machine setting on her book shelf, and she takes it down when she needs it. When we move into our own house, I will probably use a card table for my sewing machine. They cost about $40.00 sometimes less when on sale and they are wide enough to hold other materials as well. It can also be used for a picture scrap booking table, so double duty! The upside is that they also come with four chairs when you buy them as a set.

I have a card table I use for crafting other things. I wasn't sure if it would be sturdy enough. I guess the only way to try it out is to get my sewing machine out of the box and try it out! lol

I have limited space, and so I just put my sewing machine on the coffee table when I want to use it. When I'm not using it, I put its cover over it, and then store it away in the box it came in. When we have our house a little more organized, I'd like to have a little table in the study where I can do my sewing on. I wouldnt really recommend that you spend loads of money on a sewing table. They're not that necessary. Maybe in the future, when you're getting really proficient, you could sell a few of the things you have made, and then put the money towards a professional table?

go to a thrift store and see if you can get a good used desk, that should work.

I store mine on a shelf and take it down when I want to use it...I have a small folding table I got at Walmart when it was on sale so I can store that too when it's not in use..it's stable too so you don't have to worry about it bouncing around when you sew.

Right now mine is in the basement. I used to keep it on a desk when I had room upstairs. So now all I do is keep it down stairs and when I need it I set it up on the kitchen table and sew on the my girls patches then put it back downstairs. I don't care for this method but I don't have anywhere to set up a station at. But that's what I'd recommend if you want a stand and have some where to put it to look into a desk or a computer desk. Now if you were going to do this for a living or had the money to spend then get one of those fancy ones you see at the sewing shops or as sponsors of sewing shows.

To just learn how to use a sewing machine, you really don't need to have a dedicated table for sitting the sewing machine on and you can store it out of your way. When I was growing up my mother did some sewing and she never had a sewing table, she would always just use it at the dining room table because she really didn't sew on a regular basis. That would be what I would do while I was just learning to sew.

It will depend on your age and height. I have a regular simple stand that I got with my first machine in the 70's. the machine sets on a table about 18 inches from the floor and another hinged shelf fits around my free arm. I have an embroidery machine setting on a desk and I do not like to use it because of the height.
