Why is politics so negative?

I've always thought myself capable of making my own decision when it comes to who I will vote for in an election, and I suspect most people feel the same way.Why than do politicians spent so much time making their opponents look bad instead of telling us how they would govern? Debate is good, indeed is necessary, but debate the issues and stop this nonsense of digging up dirt about the personal life of someone on the opposite side. Also we're now hearing things said that could lead to violence by some unstable person. Politics was not always like this. What are your thoughts?

Hello Pose,
Definitely the politicians can speak about their own good deeds and can explain how they will do right things for people instead of blaming the opponents. This is the healthy and positive way of canvassing voters. Unfortunately many are adopting the negative way and they think that the public may hear about the bad things about the opponents then they can vote for this people. Honestly, I don’t like politicians, they are very selfish people and always think own benefits. There are some good people in politics but major percentage is from the bad people.

Yes politics have always been like this.
http://hammeringsparksfromtheanvil.blogspot.com/2008/01/favorite-presidential-one-liners.html
* 1800: Jefferson hired a writer named James Callender to attack President Adams. He wrote that John Adams is "a repulsive pedant," a "gross hypocrite," and "a hideous hermaphroditical character which has neither the force and firmness of a man, nor the gentleness and sensiblity of a woman."
* 1876 the opponents of Rutherford B. Hayes spread around a rumor that he had shot his own mother in a fit of rage.
* A Democratic newspaper told voters that Lincoln should not be elected president because he only changed his socks once every 10 days.
* 1912: Theodore Roosevelt is shot in the chest while preparing to give a campaign speech, then proceeds to deliver it anyway: “I don t know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot, but it takes more than that to kill a bull moose!”
* 1828: a Republican pamphlet said Democrat Andrew Jackson was "a gambler, a c*ck fighter, a slave trader and the husband of a really fat wife," an insult for which he never forgave his opponents.
* 1844: Democrats call Whig candidate Henry Clay on his "supposed baggage train of gambling, dueling, womanizing and "By the Eternal!" swearing." Clay lost.
* 1836: Congressman Davy Crockett accuses candidate Martin Van Buren of secretly wearing women’s clothing: “He is laced up in corsets!”

I need some fresh air . The last phrase was written in "The life of Martin van Buren", a 200 p. pamphlet written by (or under the name of) Crockett in 1835, and Crockett lost the election.
Half of these quotes are from the first half of the 19th c., and you should do the same observation in Europe : 19th c. politicians were more virulent ; I find them too soft today .

well, it had always been like that since long time ago and we just have to accept it... that's why i never want to get involved in politics ever because i know that it is dirty and full of tricks inside... it is always human nature that we want to win in a competition (in this case, the election) and we never like to lose... so they have to do everything that they can to make this happen even if it means that it will be unethical and immoral... that's what i thought because this is happening a lot in my home country... take care and have a nice day...

You are right to a point however, $$$$'s are the driving force behind politics. Those who control the money control the vote. In most cases it dosen't matter what political party you belong to; "MONEY" RULES! Too many times throughout history has proven that to be true. What do you think?

I think in our time now, there are only few politician's who we can trust. Politician's that concern in our future, personally I hate politics but because I'm concern with my country, I'm doing such blogging on the internet for the people to know.

Hi "rushian...",
I can understand how you can feel that way. It is becuse of the underhandiness and dishonesty that I changed my major in college to education. I could not tolerate the crookedness of the profession. Teaching was much more gratifying and I had a chance to instill in the youngsters a sense of honesty and fair play.

Politics is the art of the possible. So, when you first get initiated into politics, you would think that the meritorious candidate will be the likely pick. Oftentimes, we get this all wrong.
In a much open western economy, where the media is not muzzled, voters get a better picture on issues. The morality of the candidates would have been vetted and only those with a ' clean record' will stand a chance to win. However, in developing economies where the current government of the day controls every form of media, lies are just printed against the benign opposition and there is just no way they can fight back. nothing is on the level here.
Then there is money politics and gullible voters will just vote because of this, putting 'nasties' back into Parliament very five years or so.
So, we should be more careful with our precious votes!

Hi Optimist, Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I'm not concerned about the personal life of a politician but what he can do to help the country. If a man has a wife and a mistress, that's a private matter for his family to deal with. If a woman is having an affair, that too is a private matter. If someone claims to believe in God and goes to church, it's no business of mine, if he/she is an atheist, that's none of my business either. Blessings.

I agree with you that politics was not always like this, at least not to the extent it is today. Sure, I suppose there has always been some negativity but I don't think it used to be nearly as nasty as it's gotten the past few election cycles. There have been many candidates who literally never told of a single positive thing they intended to do but only of the bad stuff about their opponents, much of it either highly questionable at best and totally irrelevant to the job they were seeking. We're also now in such a volatile position that when someone places something that could be construed by some nutcase as a call for violence they're just asking for trouble. I don't think any politician really wants anyone to go out and do physical harm to anyone but I think they still need to stop and think about what they're saying and posting on their websites because you never know who's listening and reading their words.

Hi anniepa, Negative politics is a real turn off for me. Why would anyone want to listen to someone point out the faults of their opponent, instead of telling them what they would do about the problems facing the county? Thank you for responding. Blessings.

it is so sad that whenever politics is mentioned, it already connotes lopsided governance, personal attacks, betrayals, greed, and everything else negative rather than what it essentially stands for which are for the betterment of country, good leadership, and conscientious governance. truly, when greed for power gets the best of any politician, there's no stopping him/her in taking a potshot at everyone else to make himself/herself appear the best choice for becoming a leader. somehow the people also needs to be more discerning and open to making better judgments of their chosen leaders. at least this way there would be a better chance at choosing the right leader who can act for their real benefit. but then again, people have different ways of interpreting leadership, personalities, and governance. so there goes the continuing dilemma.
why is politics so negative? because those who have been chosen or wish to be chosen make it so. while those who choose allow it.

I just want to dump the whole thing, politicians that don't lie to us are the ones that are just to new and inexperienced to know what is what. They don't listen to what we feel is important and just keep asking for more money. We need jobs and jobs that pay well and will last, not just the scape gap ones thta they make available just before we vote again. Sorry not one of my favorette subjects.

Hi Pose: That's a nice question. I agree with you on the fact that politics are dirtier nowadays. Unfortunetly I haven't seen a campaign where politicans discuss their ideas instead of making personal attacks. At the same time the political world is dark and corrupt. Not everyone but there are a lot of bad people doing politics.

In my humble opinion I believe politics has always been like that. With the creation of the internet and instant communications the news gets to the public quicker. In my humble opinion I feel there is so much at stake financially in public service ie. government elected positions along with the power that goes with it; and it seems "GREED" is also a motivater.
If one were to look back through American history one would find America is rife with scandulous political assinations, thefts and scams. One that comes to mind is president Lincoln. Then there was "WATER GATE", not to mention the assination of president Kennedy. What do you think?

Its hard to be totally positive politician .Image and security means more to you even if you have a noble vision as it means staying in power.A politician that can't stay in power is as good as a normal person without a say in anything.
Hence if there are politicians ,there will always be negativity.

... politics doesen`t necessary have to be negative... iti depends on witch side you are on :)
In my opinion politics is like a bit*h ! ... If you are the one being cheated on, that`s the negative side indeed... but if you are spending "some quality time" with the "lady" is not so bad :))
...
P.S Now that i thik about it ... if the "lady" has some STD`s screwed :))
So maybe after all politics is negative ... :)

Yes, politics is very dirty ,and for some reason politicians always think that by putting the other person down it makes than look better. I'm interested in listening to solutions and issues affecting our country not the dirty laundry of individuals.
