Dear MyLottters,
Lately, I am having a new hobby and for the very first time in
my life, I am baking a cake and cookies.
My first attempt was baking some Chinese New Year cookies. I got some
recipes from the my sisters and they looks pretty simple in term of
the ingredients and method of making the cookies.
So I make 3 types of cookies : peanut butter cookies, butter cookies and
prune almond cookies.
From this 3 cookies, the best I like is peanut butter cookies.
Overall, my husband commented the outcome are good and taste great.
Then my second attempt was last week, baking a banana cake since I have
few bananas left in the kitchen. But the outcome is not that good.
So the next day, I tried again and Yes...at last I success in baking a
banana cake. Feel so happy :)
And today, I make a steamed egg cake which is much more healthy.
I did little bit modifying in the ingredients(add vanilla essence and instead
of using 7-up, I am using 100plus),but the outcome is great.
It motivate me to have more baking session again in future. Will search for more
cake recipes online.
Share your first experience baking a cake/cookies or even first time do cooking.
What is your best dishes or cake you ever make?
Have a nice weekend !!

I've been making cakes for a long time but I'm not too much into cookies. I try to stay away from all mixes and make the cakes from scratch but I've got a Cake Mix Doctor and use those recipes occasionally. My biggest success has been with the buttery pound cakes. I usually bake them in the tube pan. This cake doesn't actually need an icing. Sometimes I sprinkle with powdered sugar, sometimes not, and at another time I will make a complimentary icing. Homemade cakes are so good.

The Cake Mix Doctor is a book of cake recipes authored by Anne Byrn. The recipes give instructions in how to start with a commercial boxed cake mix and add in extra ingredients to create cakes that are better than just using the cake mix. Her web site is www.cakemixdoctor.com
The pound cake has at times been called butter cake, I suppose. Some recipes call for as much as 3 cups of butter. But they are so delicious.

HI,
Thank you for the respond,I am wondering what is
Cake Mix Doctor? Is it a website with cake recipes?
The buttery pound cake that you make ,is it same with normal
butter cake?
I love to eat butter and sponge cake, it is simple, but the taste
is great.
I plan to make butter and sponge cake probably next weekend.
Both me and my son like to eat cake with icing sugar. We also like
to eat swissroll with those icing or fruit jam.
I agreed with you that homemade cake is always the best.

Dear Shia,
Congratulations! I have yet to try baking.
I need a mentor to guide me. I just dare
not try, or I would say .. how to begin?
What should be my first step?
I first time learn to cook was from my brother.
He bought some pot and pan and the company give
free cooking lesson. So both of us went and the
first dish we tried was "Sweet & Sour Prawn". It
turns out very well. I was 20 years old then...

Hi Shia3.
I think this activity is something your husband will really appreciated because he can eat delicious cookie with out buying it .
I am don't have patient to make a cookie, I prefer making a cake. I can not hold had to made it into thats cute size its need creativity to made a good shape and I am not satisfied with my result even it taste OK. I don't really matters really because my sibling and parent will consume it in matters of hours.
So I usually force myself to made in one time a year, in big celebration because my younger cousin will love it. I thing the most easier cookies is ginger bread because I can made it with big size and decorating it.

Hi,
I would say the cookies that I make taste not bad,
although it is my first try making the cookies, but I am happy
with the outcome.
Making a cookies is pretty time consuming as i have to make the shape
of the cookies one by one, then lay them on tray and get them baked.
As making a cake is just need to mix all the ingredients, beat them well
and then pour into the tray and let it bake or steam.
Yesterday, I just make banana cake and it taste great, even my son
loves eating it too.

Hi,
I am not good in baking a cake and still in learning process.
Actually baking cookies is much more simple, but it is more
time consuming as we have to mould the cookies one by one or even
shape into the certain shape for each cookies. But it is definitely
can save money if you were to bake cookies yourself for your own
consumption.

Hi,
Thank you for your response. While I saw your comment
about brownies, yesterday when I was in supermarket getting
the ingredient for steamed bun, I saw the pack of brownies mixture,
I am not sure whether it taste nice or not. Never try before.
But I am not really a fans of brownies, maybe because I am
not a chocolate lover.
I prefer those sponge or butter cake.taste nice and simple.

I love cooking and baking as well, the problem is I don't have an oven to bake cakes for my children. What I always do is to steam those mixtures just like when I steam my custard cake, egg cake and local delicacies. My mother taught me how to cook that's why I also cook and bake with my daughters so they will get familiar of the ingredients and the process of cooking dishes.

Hi,
I believe you are a good cook and good baker.
Actually I don't have my own oven at home, I am using my
mother-in-law's oven for baking cookies and cake.and that was
my first try baking some cookies for Chinese New Year.
I am so scared that I will spoilt her oven, that is why
I hardly want to use her oven for baking.
I prefer eat steamed cakes,it is not heaty and taste good also.
Yesterday, I make steamed egg cake.Taste good.
I am not good in cooking and baking and I really have to learn more
and have more practice to get better outcome.
My son is too young to involve himself in cooking and baking, so
I still prefer to get ready the ingredients by myself instead of
asking him to join me in the kitchen.

I also love baking cakes and other desserts, I found baking interesting as well as challenging, i specialized in chiffon cakes my mom taught me how to make chiffon cake when i was in high school, since then i love this kind of cakes, the best chiffon cakes which i bake was a mango chiffon cake which my kids loves so much and always present in our family gathering or reunions, but it takes lots of failure in baking this kind of cake before i came up with the best result i want it to be,(the texture and taste). Baking is like always doing some experiment, there is always failure but it feels great when you bake your cake perfect. HAPPY baking!

Hi,
Lately, I also love to bake but I have not got time
to try bake other cake except banana cake and some chinese
new year cookies.
There was once I tried to make sponge cake, but the outcome is
failed. I follow exactly the recipe, but not sure where is
the mistake and both me and my husband gueesed there is a lack
of ingredient in the recipe.
I like to eat chiffon cake, but never try to bake one for myself.
Be it a failure, but i never give up and i believe by practising more
and more, we would be able to get a perfect cake for our family.

It must be a funny thing to make cookies by your own hands, especially when it tastes good and is popular to others. Come on with your more tries in cookie baking.
It's a pity that I never make any cookies by myself. But I have a favorite cookie which is mung bean flaky pastry. I always buy some from the bakery.

New Year, I feel like trying to make something for the guests to
try,so my husband suggested, try bake some cookies and my sister
shared with me her cookies recipes.

I do believe with more practice, the outcome will even better.
Actually my favourite cookies is pineapple cookies, but it is lot works
to do in preparing the pineapple jam for the cookies.
I don't think I will try making this cookies.

Hi,
Thank you for your response. Since you love baking,so
what is the best cake you ever make?
For me, I started to like baking, but I still need to learn.
Sometimes, I don't have full confidence on making a cake,I am
so worry that I may fail and the cake does not taste nice.
But I am lucky to have my husband motivate me to try out and
when the outcome is good, we feel happy and we enjoy eating the
cake together.

Hi Sexyice,
Honey Cake? Oh..i never try this cake before and I believe
the taste must be very nice and delicious. Mind to share the recipe here
with me.
Banana cake is very simple to make, that is why I try it. Or else, when I
read those more complicated recipe, I do feel lazy to try out, furthermore,
I am not an expert in baking a cake. For the beginner, I have to try
sometimes simple and easy.Have to learn step by step.
Have a nice weekend !!

Hi! How is the baking going? I too, am a beginner baker and am always looking for new ideas. This time I have a craft cake due on the 12th for what could be 20 people so I have the feeling it'll be two tiers. I'm reasonably good with the baking and the filling part--just need the excuse to develop my artistic skills.
I was toying with the idea of using a few ideas that promote crafts such as knitting needles with yarn on them attached to a 'ball of yarn', drawing pencils, and perhaps some flowers. I don't want to overwhelm the cake with too many designs but I do want to push myself a bit. I'd also like to do some piping.
If you have some other ideas, let me know!
Thanks!

Hi. shia88. Yes, I love baking cookies. I only know how to bake the cookies that come pre made already in the cookie package. I have yet to learn how to make a great cookie by mixing up all of the ingredients on my own. I usually will bake cookies that are made from Pillsbury. They have came out yummy too. It is great that you can bake cakes and cookies while learning how to. You are doing a great job, keep up the good work!
