Some of yesterdays a blur remembered only through snatches of words, come, diabetic seizure, why you slee so much?:I wokd up as the para medics came backand took me to something they called the West Tower. I asked various people coming in and starting an I V and asking ,me :Dont go to sleeo yt." well folks expecting not to go back to my room here I was scared wide awake. I had had several shot. seems they were both insulin an finallu about 11pm the medicien doctor introduced himself and told me I was in because of extreme high blood sugar and dehydration.oh so that why I could hardly talk and was so thirsty ,horribly thristy. So I had a lot of fluids IV and meds by mouth see,s O was actomg reallly and my tablemate Sandra left the table to get Christine and Tia to tell them I was really ill I owe so much to her as my blood sugar was so high I was in a light coma.hankfully they got it turned around and stabilized it but the doctor whom I saw today wants me to take twice as much metformin as I have taken, and cut way back on carbs. Also he said I almost died yesterday sO I am not to be so careless. All this happened because server put about a cup full of pancake suryup on my french toast and like a fool who loves syrup on pancakes I went ahead and ate it .I wentup to my room and tried to mylot and could barely see I was so groggy. Then I went downstairs hopping the walk would help wear off the high, the rest as they say is history inhthis cas herstory.lol the Moral to this is all mylot diabets don't eat that sugary treat you know you shuld, the life you save will be your own. because the syrup is alreadtoo much glucose added ot the french toast will be too many carbs for you to handle. Yoj will handle. Its just not worthe the risk. I have handled it a bit before but she had only put on a tablepsoonful.. I went to 188 and that was even high for me but I drank a lot of water. This was a wake up call to me to cut back on my carbs.I might even lose ssome pounds

Hatley! You have to take care of yourself! And here I was thinking of a Children's story for you to star in! Mind you, I don't know if you were actually a children's librarian, but that's what you would be in my little story! I'd better actually work on it so you can read it!

hi elicBxn thats funny peculiar I mean. I was the childrens librarian's assistant for several years. I had to sit in on Gail's story hour and hear hear her enthrall the kids with her puppet Bobby Bunney . she was just great, and sadly she could have no children of her own. She would have made a great Mom. She raised these huge rottweilers and they slept on the bed with them. well to each his own.lol.The kids were typical of all kids that young and when she gave out treats of candy and cookies so you could hear them all over the library. They were on sugar highs and oh the noise and confusion. the older people were all kibitzing to the front desk fuming that the children were noisy. but now days it is not a cardinal sin to talk in a library and

Oh, my....that was just too high!! I do hope you are okay now. Your typing is kind of raggedy here. Are you sure you are alright? The person that added all that much syrup surely needs to be re-educated about those under her care.

hi yoyou yes it was way too high. that docto in Fountain Valley Regional was kind but really firm. He said" you came close to dying so you must cut the carbs, next time might be too late." Also He said," I am prescribing 1000 mg of metformin twice a day instead of five hundred twice a day to help you get back in control." Yes Yoyo WorkingGurl is an angel. And oh my reading over the discussion I posted last night yep it was raggedy I saw the errors this morning that I did not even notice last night. While they said they had got my blood glucose regualted I was still high at bedtime 224 but at least not 526.This morning the same worker handed me a plate ful of french toast butter and you guessd it tons of syrup. I looked at her and said," I am sorry but I am not to eat suyrup that is no sugar free," So she gave my plate to Steve who really did seem to relish it,he who always turns doen the syrup which i have started doing again. So I was still a little raggedy last night lol. Much better this morning. At least I d o know how to keep my blood sugar done. its a balancing act but when I am in balance I feel great and my blood sugar reading show that.

hi Fwidman yes and I turned it down this morning. She had not even asked me if Iwant syrup on my french toast so she was handing me a plate swimminin syrup on my french toast. she frowned and handed it to Steve who never want syrup on his french toast. poor guy but he is at least not a diabetic.I had been turning it down except when Tiara asked me as she would just pour a teaspoon or so so I had the flavor without the sugar.I am so lucky I survived all this.one good thing the doctor u pped my diabetic med, Metformin to 1000 mgs. twice a day instead of 500 twice a day. I feel much better under this new change. The doctor said that I still must watch what I eat though and believe me from now on I will.

hi my fellow mylotters, I did not sleep well last night as I was still thinking how you get careless when you have a chronic disease like diabetesd and get by eating something you have not touched for months knowing its too heavily laden with corn syrup I believe. I cannot really blame the server as she just got in a rut, still there are some diabetics here who don't have the same mental stability as I have and would not remember that pancake syrup here is very very sweet. So they would go ahead and eat it. So maybe in a way this server is too careless as she is supposed to ask us if we want that syrup. The one who usually serves us knows I am a brittle diabetic meaning I can go low or high easier than some diabetics. AS Long as I have not gone too low I prefer staying from 100 to 140 at all times but lately I have let the numbers slide up but no more. I love being alive too much to be so careless again. Now I have to get a hold of my son and let him know too.

You are so welcome and glad I can call, all in the name of our dear friend. She worried me as soon as I saw the discussion. I think whomever served her the too much syrup also has to be careful with Mrs. Hatley and the many others too, because they may not be as blessed as Mrs. Hatley and get really sick and or suddenly pass because of it. We will all keep praying and seeing Mrs. Hatley through to be well very soon.

Wow, Hately, that sounds so scary! Glad to hear you're ok though. I'm not diabetic YET but when I had blood drawn in November my blood sugar was higher than normal. My sister is a diabetic and she explained a lot about carb cutting. But after reading your experience, I'm going to apply it to MY life. I hope that server gets fired--do they know they nearly killed you?

7 May 11
Yes, I'm a proud Scorpio (November 2nd). I'm just now learning about carbs (hanging head in shame), so I'm still at the beginning. I've really got to sit down and do some reading, then analyze what diet really is. I'll look into the glucose meter--I guess that's to check my blood level?

I am following some of my sister's suggestions--she was diagnosed at 32 or 33 with Type 2, which I understand is quite young. She only had to take insulin when she was pregnant, but controls it through diet. I'm trying to watch carbs (hard) and sugar intake (easier). When I go back to the doctor, I'll get my blood tested again.

gestational diabetes sometimes is a prelude to later full blown diabetes but not always,. I find it easier now to resist their too sweet cakes, pies and cookies remembering what that doctor told me. I do not ever want to be in that situation again.I am doing pretty good and I try to c ut w ay back on carbs.

People need to read things like this so they know not to do what they know they shouldn't in the first place. Thank you for that. But please do what out and don't do this again. Your blood sugar was 526???? Oh wow Hatley, that is way too high, of course you probably already know that, but wow... At least it is lower, but you are right, 188 is still too high, but not as high as over 500.. I am glad you got treated before it was too late. I remember my sister wouldn't feel it coming and she would start to go into a diabetic coma, but fortunately her family was there to keep an eye on her and make sure she has her insulin.. That is too close, I hope you can get your sugar down and keep it down...

Hatley, my sister was a type two diabetic until she got mad and quit taking her meds and ate all kind of bad food. It not only put her in the hospital, but she had to start using insulin and not that this would happen to you, but she became what is called a brittle diabetic. That means that no matter what she did, her blood sugar went up and down for not apparent reason. I know, as one with a horrible sweet tooth, how hard it is too eat right, but it worth it to keep you sticking around, so now you are going to have me on your case if I hear you have eaten the wrong foods..

hi carm thanks so much for caring. I am really going to say no a lot and if the servers are upset tough nuggies as my son used to say, He was by to visit me and to read me what the internet said about diabetics who do not stick to the right foods. He said he was glad I did not go into a full blown coma. also he scolded me and said when your blood sugar is too high it actually kills off brain cells. I think he also wanted to scare me into common sense.

hi carm me too and I believe I will as that nice doctor who read me the stern riot act also said he was changing my metformin for diabetes to 1000 mgs instead of 500 twice a d ay. This whole morning I have felt so much better than I have for weeks. Now i must get myself to the Quest labs to have some bloodwork done so I c an go tell my primary doctor that i got my wish afterall as he kept refusing to raise my metformin. the other doctor said it would help me much more to control my blood glucose but still I must not eat stuff I know will raise my blood sugar. That semi -coma scared the living daylights out of me as they kept asking me questions and I kept falling asleep. One man said," why you sleep like that? why you not awake so we can help you?" I wanted to say I wish I knew the hell why I am falling asleep but I guess I really knew the answer. But it was the first time this had happened to me and its going to be the last time too;.I am not on insulin as I am type two but stillif I do not eat properly Icould be put on insulin. I do know how to control my blood sugar so its just a matter of choosing wisely what I can eat here and what I cannot eat here.

celticeagle I sure am not going to poop out on you as I like being alive and having fun here; I just cut my portion of rice in two and asked for a second serving of fish but they had run out. rice is on thing that some diabetics can eat and some like me just eat a few spoonfuls and our blood sugar shoots up.Sharon refused to go for any walks . as for me I can only walk a short ehile and my injured knee starts stabb ing me with pain. this is a long p rocess why if I had just broken it it would have healed by now. I am going out on my maiden voyage with my walken after dinner tonight with my friend Nelda. I am very nervous about it but I will be fine.

I don´t know how careless they could be I don´t like syrup anyway and I found out that they put this in most of the Biscuits here as well so I have cut back on them as I have never like syrup tasting things in my life. It is hard a bit as I had got to liking those biscuits as well. No wonder People are having problems with their Health too they don´t realize what goes into the Food half the time. hi lovinangels instead21 Yes I guess I am really. I know that stuff must have corn syrup in it. The new doctor I had in Fountain Valley Regional Hopsital upped my 500 mgs of Metformin to 1000 twice a day. for the first time in ages I feel so much better after Breakfast. You know I owe Sandra one of my table mates a heck of a lot as she went to the medical b person Christine and told her I was really ill. then Christine got on the ball and took my blood sugar.526 way way too high so I was sent to ER and thus to the hospital over night I am fine now as long as I eat like I am supposed to and I will really I will. rest and mylot and being happy again all will help me to get well. I know what I have to do now and it will be easy as I never ever want to feel like that again..

Wow Hatley, it sounds like you had a really close call. I know what you mean though, it is really hard sometimes to resist the things we know we shouldn't indulge in. I have the problem of putting on weight really easily and I have to watch what I eat. I can't always indulge in the sweets, especially my favorite - ice cream, as often as I want to. If I put on a few too many pounds I go use the Atkins approach to cut back on the carbs. It's the only thing that works for me to lose weight. I'm one of those people that has to "manage" my weight. I'm so envious of those people that seem to eat anything they want and never gain a pound. It sounds like you need to manage what you eat even more closely than me. There are a whole lot of people here on MyLot and I'm sure in your personal life that hope you do and are really glad you are ok.

hi millertime yes I am also one who can gain weight it seems just by sniffing a donut let alone eating one. I need to lose about fifty pounds and since I hurt my knee and was in CareHouse for 20 days I lose the first 25 pounds there as they fed me a really thought out diet for diabetice consisting of fruits and veggies and some very lean chicken, beef and soy foods. I wad down from 220 to 198 and now here the last time i was up tpp 203 so have more to lose yet. If I can lose fifteen pounds even according to my p.care doctor it will be much easier to control my blood sugar too.yes I seem to have a lot of lovely friends here on my lot.and also I found here in Gold crest. Oh aren't those people who can eat like a pig an not gain an ounce provoking when I have to really work to lose weight, and can put it on by just smelling the goodies I m not to eat.I really hate to look in the mirror and see my big butt and would love to look slim and svelte like other women even my age. My roomie is a tiny little woman shes about five two same as me but oh my G she weighed 117 the other eve when I weiht 203 and boy dis I envy her. She can wear anything and look just great in it. she is 83 and must have been pretty as a young woman as now she has no teeth so thats sunken in her face.I told my best friend Nelda about her complaining how fat she had got and we were both laughing thinking how we wish we had that complaint too. lol.

Wow... All they want you to do is up the Metformin? Personally high blood sugars like this, with you having this type of reaction is not normal, and should be looked into more to see if there is something else there causing it. Are you having a lot of higher readings? I have learned over time that carbs can be a cause of the higher readings, but not always. And certain ones react with me differently than others. Do hope they are right in how to treat you, and wishing you the Best.

Wow Patsie! Omg.... the idea of losing such a dear friend really scares me sweetie! I mean, I know it can happen but still, it doesn't sit so well with me. I've lost too darned many friends as it is and don't want to lose you! But there again, I can understand how it can happen, blood sugar can go up on it's own or even go down on it's own which is what happened with my dad a year ago. He had gotten up and was doing his thing in the morning. Mom heard a thump which didn't sound right and she got up and found dad in the chair all sprawled out with his tongue hanging out! It scared her big time! She called for the neighbor who is a paramedic and he came and helped get dad back to his senses before he left this world. She called us right after she called the neighbor, which we got up and threw some clothes on and flew out the door! When we got there, dad looked like he'd been ran over by a mac truck he was so pale. So now mom watches dad more closely and vise versa, which is a good thing in one sense and bad in another meaning, they get under each other's feet more often than they need to be. Bless your heart sweetie! Please do be more careful! Some of us LOVE YOU! and want you to be around a while longer!! Ok?

I think hat eating slowly and in particular, taking the time to thoroughly chew each piece of food is vitally important to good health as it allows the digestive system to work more effectively. That is why some cultures seem to have less health issues even though they do not appear to eat lots more healthy foods than say the USA does. It is because their meal times are a social occasion in which they take their time and savor every mouthful.

This discussion is a couple of days old, so I hope that by the time you're reading this, you'd already be feeling a little better. I'm glad that someone was able to help you. And just in time. Hope you stay away from that syrup. I know I can't stay away (specially with hotcakes), but I hope your resolve is stronger than mine.
