My Dog Caught Ticks From Pet Salon!

Today I brought my little Ginger to the pet care grooming services to the mall nearest me. To my dismay tonight while my next door neighbor was playing with her he found out there was a tick just below her neck. We checked every part of her body but there was no other except for the one in the neck. So I pulled it out with a tweezer and dabbed alcohol over the part where I plucked the tick.
I plan to call the pet care services tomorrow since it's night time round here. I want them to give her a free flea and tick bath since my dog got it from there. I suspect that it came from the shihtzu who was first inside the cage where they placed ginger next.
So, do you think it is just and reasonable for me to ask them to give her a free tick and flea bath? What would you in this case?

I don't know if the groomer has a policy like this. Even if he has, it would be difficult to prove that the tick you found came from his saloon.
Ticks usually live in the grass and when they sense a dog approaching, they attache themselves on the coat and start searching for a proper place to feed. They don't just climb up and immediately bite. They usually look for the thin skin from the face, the ears, the belly, the underarms and the front of the neck and chest. Considering the fact that ticks don't jump but walk slowly, it takes some time for a tick to bite.
From my experience, when I go to the woods with my dog, ticks attache themselves to her coat but they don't bite her immediately. When I check her coat at home (after one or two hours), I don't find any tick that has already bitten. But I do find some ticks, walking through the coat, in search for the proper place to bite. How much time was between the moment you left her at the groomers' and you discovered the tick?
It's less possible that a tick, once attached to a dog, to leave it. Their only goal in life is to feed and to breed. Once attached to a dog, they won't leave it until they are full. Why would the hungry tick leave the Shih Tzu?
This could be possible if the two dogs were caged together for a while in the same small crate and they stood close to each other so that the tick just walked from one's coat to another's.
It is also possible that the tick came from the comb or from the brush used for the dog groomed before Ginger. Ticks don't leave by themselves until they are full but, before they bite, they can be accidentaly detached by brushing the dog's coat.
I told you all this because you must be prepared for what the groomer might say in his defence. As I said, you must have strong arguments to convince him that the tick you found on Ginger came from his saloon.
Please come back to tell us what was the result of your complain.

thanks for commenting back :). The drive from the pet salon to my house is just around 5 mins. we discovered it about 10 mins after we got home. We do not have grasses where I live because I live in an apartment complex where there are no flowers and no grasses just concrete floors...
It's settled now the groomers did give her a flea and tick bath for free. They said it could not be helped that there are times when an infested dog comes in and other dogs catch it. I bought Fipronil spray as a monthly maintenance just to be on the safe side to prevent something like this from happening again.

Great! This means that the groomer is a serious person. He surelly want his clients to be back. If he denied that the tick came from his saloon, you would probably change him for another groomer.
Does Ginger accept the spray? My previous dog didn't like me to spray anything on her coat.
Instead of the chemicals (Fipronil) you can use a lavender oil solution for the time you take Ginger to the groomer. I've noticed that there are less ticks (if any!) on my dog's coat if I spray her coat with Lavender solution before leaving to the woods. It seems that ticks (as well as moths and probably all insects) don't like the scent of lavender and they stay away of the dog that smells like lavender.

This is not good news. In my country, ticks carry a lethal virus called Babesiosis. If not treated in time, a dog that had been bitten by a tick carrying this disease can die. A friend of mine just lost her 14 years old Shih Tzu last week because Babesiosis.
Are you sure your Ginger got the tick from the groomer?
How big was the tick when you found it?

Yes my dog got it from the groomer's and I am positive about it. I took Ginger to the groomer's then left her there while we went to attend sunday services. We later picked her up from there and found out she was placed ed in another cage where a shihtzu was previously caged in, instead in her own carrier where we left her.
From the groomer's we head home and then the neighbor played with her and found out about the tick. We found only one tick just below her neck and it was a big one but not bloating with blood.

Keeping a pet is an expensive and extensive affair nowadays. Whoever says it's a dog's life never really understood the meaning of it. I know of friends who care for their pets more intimately and passionately than their own family.
You can go ahead to request them to compensate in this case. Only thing is that what is the evidence that is sure proof.

The only evidence left is the tick bite but I threw the tick away....My dog is part of our family and I have taken care of her since she was just 2 months old. However, I love my hubby and takes care of him more intimately than my dog :)

I would call and tell them. They got in from somewhere. Maybe another dog or from the salon it self. But they need to know.

There was no other place we took her other than the salon. We took her home right after we fetched her there. I called them and they gladly gave her a flea and tick for free.

I agree with yoyo, I don't know if you can prove where the tick came from. In face, I wonder if it is possible for ticks to go from one dog to another, why would a tick do this? Plus the dogs would have to be in the same cage, does this salon keep the dogs in different cages? My daughter works for a groomer and the dogs are not put into a cage with another one, with the exception of my dogs, but that is they are sisters and wouldn't be able to stand to be away from one another..

Well remember, ticks are what caused the black plague. So, it's very easy for them to jump from one dog to another, even if they are in different cages.

Thanks yoyo, I was confused there for a moment,.The only reason ticks suck blood is so they can reproduce, once engorged, they fall off the host. Here is a site that explains the life cycle of a tick. http://animals.howstuffworks.com/arachnids/tick2.htm
I can't see if a tick is already on one host, why it'd jump to another..

I have a little special Yorkie and he goes to the groomers at least every six weeks. If he had caught a tick while there then I would by all means take him back and tell them to give a flea bath for no cost to me. I believe that they are suspose to keep the cages cleaned at all times to prevent this from happening. You go girl. Let us know how it turns out.

hi rose,
I called them today and they gladly gave her a flea and tick bath for free when I explained that we went no other place from the pet salon. I told them that they should check the cages after an animal has got in for parasites. For sure when they groom the animal they could see ticks then they should clean the cage before they let another animal in.

True, but it isn't their fault if someone came in with a dog that had fleas, but they should disinfect their place daily.

I am very sorry to hear that your dog called Ginger caught a tick from the pet grooming parlor. It is hard to remove a tick I have heard and a tick can give a dog an infection. I think that the grooming parlor should offer Ginger a free flea and tick bath. That is what I would do if I was in your situation.
I have got two miniature poodles. I bought my dog called Secret in 2004 and he is white with black patches. I used to get him groomed at a pet grooming parlor. Luckily he didn't catch any flees of ticks there. Then in 2006 I go my black dog called Magic. Nowadays I get my dogs groomed by a mobile dog groomer that comes to my home. I believe it is less stressful for my dogs. Their fur is non-moulting and grows fast. So they have the pet groomer every eight weeks.

hi maxi,
I wish there is a mobile pet groomer where I am that would definitely not be so expensive. Mobile pet groomers round here are twice as expensive as those that have at their own store. The last time I attempted to cut Ginger's hair in the butt was so funny and the poor dog looked like someone having a very bad hair day :). So from then on I never attempted to cut it on my own again but instead brought her to the pet grooming salon. but I guess that is one risk that a pet owner like me has to face when we take our dogs to grooming centers.
I love your fur babies names...so cute:)

Yes I believe you are quite right to call and demand they give your dog a free tick and flea bath. Their policy should state that dogs with ticks should be put into another cage if nothing else! Well I suppose you've already called seeing as it's been two months and so I do hope that they gave you your request.

I doubt that you will get a free bath out of this situation. The groomer's can say that you cannot prove that the tick came from their place and your dog could have picked it up from just about any place. Fleas and ticks can be brought into homes and other areas where the dog had been just through hitching a ride on shoes or clothing.

When you bring your pet to a salon, you can expect a fast food type of care.
It is reasonable to expect a free tick bath ,don't keep your hopes up. You have to bring the pet in right away with the tick to expect to get anything done.
Next time bring it to your Vet or another Vets office. It might be a lil more , they are trained to look for these things when leaving.

It's not their fault that people bring in flea and tick-infested animals to be groomed. You should just do what you can on your own to rid your dog of ticks.
