If you are running two AV programs at once, this can cause problems because they can fight each other. It's always advisable to have only ONE active AV program (you can have more than one available to run scans but only one should be actively doing the background checking).
Something that many people don't realise is that Antivirus programs are specialised tools which prevent viruses and trojans from invading our systems and damaging them (and do it very well, on the whole) but that there are other things - adware and spyware - which are NOT viruses but can tie up a lot of system resources and processing time.
Download, install and run Spybot S&D to clear your system of these nasties. Many are not very dangerous but some can actually compromise your security and be sending information 'back to base' without your specific consent. Many toolbars come into this category. We tend to allow them to install without thinking that they take up system resources and without realising that some of them exist to gather information about how you use your PC. It's not generally 'personal' or 'sensitive' information but such programs are not really necessary and can easily slow things down enormously.
I had a very similar problem to yours quite recently. I first scanned the hard disks with Avast (currently the best free AV, in my opinion) and found and removed a number of Javascript viruses (how they got there when I am running Avast all the time is another story!) However, my PC was still slow so I ran Spybot which found some more (not dangerous but unnecessary) stuff and cured the problem for me.

You can download it from here: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html
The other two tools I mentioned above - from Piriform, not Pirisoft as I put! - can be had from here: http://www.piriform.com/
I use CCleaner about once a week (or more often if my browser starts acting slow). You shouldn't need to defragment more than about twice a year unless your PC has a smallish hard drive which you use a great deal for editing files (word processing, spreadsheets, photo editing and so on).

Well it might be a virus or it might just be your computers specifications. You might just be running programs that make your computer run slow. Please tell us more details so that we can help you figure out why your computer is running particularly slow.
What are your exact computer specifications and what type of programs do you usually run?
An upgrade might help you out on your problem. You might also try defragging just like what the others said.

Hello atleya, how long have you been using that computer? It is because if your computer may become slower and slower from time to time after it is getting "old". If your computer is rather new, then just ignore this concern.
And did you save many things in the harddisk and almost use up the memory? When the memory is almost used up, your computer will also getting slower and what you can do is to zip the files which you do not use frequently and delete some unwanted files. Do you download stuff with bit-torrent all the time? It would keep your harddisk running and inputting new data WHICH may cause damage to some parts of your harddisk. What you can do is to do a disk scan to check if there is any parts of your harddisk is having problems (Because I don't know what you meant by slow, saving something very slowly? probably the harddisk problem).
And are there any softwares which are newly installed these days? The problem of your computer can be caused by these softwares clashing with each other or with the system.
Furthermore, you can, do a virus scan of course, to see if there is any virus infection. Sometimes, maybe the anti virus software reports everything is normal and no virus has been found, but there maybe some malware or trojan programs are running in your computer which the anti-virus did not find out. At this point you may need some help from the computer experts net friends to help. What you can do is to download a software called Hijackthis. (link below)
http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/
This software helps to find out suspicious softwares or programs which are running in your computer and generates reports for further investigation. After doing the scan, you can post the reports online or save the reports. Ask some experts to read the reports and find out which programs have to be deleted (they are probably virus causing problem).
See if it helps, cheers! ^___^

I do have an idea why your PC is slow. It is because you have two antivirus software installed at the same time.
Choose the one you prefer and get rid of the other, you should not have them at same time by any means.
If this doesn't help, you can try cleaning junk files, temporary internet files, defragment the hard drive and compact your registry. There are certain applications that will do these, you can even find some for free.
I hope you manage to resolve the problem, have a nice day!

Ah I have experience the same thing my PC at home. Thank goodness that I have a brother-in-law who is a computer technician. He told me that the anti-virus we are using is no longer updated that is why there are new viruses that it can no longer detect. You try to seek assistance from a computer technician.

First of all, your PC can be slow for several reasons. Now, I have worked for Technical support for Dell & then HP before and here are the steps you need to do for speeding up your system. You have not mentioned the operating system you use. So I cannot give the detailed steps. But follow these steps:
1. Never use two antivirus softwares on your PC. They are bound to conflict and can cause several problems. No antivirus is 100% secure. I use AVG and it works fine. I have used it for years now. Uninstall all other antivirus software. Run scan with AVG or any other software you wish to use.
2. If you have Windows XP, go to run command in start menu or if you have Windows Vista or Windows 7 go to the search box just above the windows icon generally located at the bottom left hand corner of the screen and type prefetch. Press enter. A folder pops up with a lot of files and folders. Delete all of these. If one of the files does not get deleted do not worry. Close the folder.
3. Follow the same step again this time typing %temp% in the search box or run command and delete all files in this folder as well. Close the folder.
Restart your system and check if the speed has increased. If not, let me know the Operating system that you use and I shall tell you how to proceed.

Hello Amitgune, thank you very much for your care about my pc problem. Now, I am in the office. And my problem is with my pc at home. Meantime, I have removed one of antivirus software, I am now using only AVIRA. I also try it with glary, and seem rather better. However, I will try again your guidance. I use Windows XP.
Again many thanks, friend for the helps. Best wishes,

Defragmentation is a great option. It orders your scattered files and packs them leaving free space that makes your PC faster. You can use windows Defragmentation tool or download any software from the net for free.
Windows tool: Go to startprogramsaccessoriessystem toolsdisk defragmenter
Well if this doesn't work you can use any registry cleaner software that clears unwanted registries of your removed softwares. This can help a lot.
Or you can use any malware(not virus) removing software. That'll help too.
gud luck!!

There are many reasons.
here i am going to say small tips to improve your system speed.
*press Windows button with 'r' simultaniously and u get run prompt. There type "recent" and tap enter.A window will be displayed. Select everything and press delete botton.
*Goto run prompt as in above step and now type 'temp' and delete everything .
*Again go to run prompt and type '%temp%' and delete everything.
*Go to recycle bin and delete every thing.
Do these things often .you system will speed up.Because these things take buffer memory. So if u delete this unwanted data u can speedup your system.

Most of them I have given you nice suggestions, I was mostly looking for answers than giving you one, because I have the same problem, mine is the startup of windows is very slow, I have removed most of the programs from the startup done the defragmentation, scanned the pc and used the registry cleaner also, but still it takes almost 5 to 10 minutes to start which is really irritating.....
anyway it was nice letting out my frustration here and found so many answers to other problems...

Argggh. Me too.
I do try to empty out any software that I do not use anymore, though mentally hard to get myself to "just in case". ;o) But mine does that way too often, and often wayyy too much in how slow it goes or how programs might close up (mini crashes?). The best thing for me is when I have to reboot, though I hate that because it takes so long.

I would certainly recommend to begin at the beginning!
1. reboot
2. how much space is taken up on your drive "C"? If it's 60% or more you may want to consider getting rid of programs you don't use.
If it's still slow you may want to consult a trusted tech geek.

If you encounter your pc is getting slow, check all the possibility why it happens, check the memory the memory must be high, starting to 512MB to 2GB, the also check the internet connection because some internet connection is not suited for your area. That's some reason why your pc is slow, even that is a pentium4 but if there are good memory cards and good internet connection it will work. I suggest to reformat you pc and upgrade you pc. it is case to case basis.

In regular intervals clean the temp files. Go to Run type PREFETCH, RECENT, %TEMP% and TEMP. Individually clean all the above four folder occasionally it will keep your system fast. It is recommended that you use a licensed antivirus rather than a free version. Free version will always have some limitations.
