It's been over four (4) years since I acquired hypertension. I really don't know what caused this ailment but it runs in my family. My mom is also hypertensive and has been such since her early 40's. She's having this for over 40 years already. There's nothing to be afraid if we already have this disease. What we will do is to control it. Take the medicines and submit for medical check up regularly. Control your food intake. Avoid stress. Stress is the number factor of any disease. Most important is we should follow the advice of our doctor.

The year was 1994. I have agreed to give blood donation. I was working in a Bank. when we give blood donation, we will be entitled to a day's leave. I went to Apollo Hospital, Chennai. I was called in. I was asked to lie down. They checked the B.P. Immediately doctor said "We cannot take blood from you; you are having high BP". I had to go to office with grudge - that I could not give blood and I was not getting leave. (I have given blood for eight/nine times earlier --I received certificates after donating five times and donated after that also.) I was not given any medicine after that. Somewhere in 2004/05 only when again BP was higher I was given medicine for BP and also cholesterol. I am taking the medicines regularly. I am ok. with medication my BP will read 90/140. In Chennai doctors take these to be not abnormal. I am given only 5 mg tablets. Whereas in USA for my son in law they are prescribed 40 mg tablets. Once you start taking it u cannot reduce. Doctors make money for the pharmaceutical companies and also for insurance companies. Exercises are required but I am not able to on account of extreme weather in USA. While in chennai I will walk a lot inside colleges and that will be a good exercise. One problem with this disease is that suddenly it can rise also and become fatal. It happened in the case of my mother in 1994.

Oh my mom also had an attack of hypertension. She's still alive but she's not in her normal self again. She always forget anything. She can't take care of herself already. She needs assistance when changing her clothes, taking a bath, etc..

With ageing these things come. if she is able to manage her requirements inside the house and doesn't depend on others it must be ok for us. take care of her. have a good day.

She's really dependent on others when it comes to her hygiene. She can't change her clothes alone, etc. All that she could do is to walk around the house, eat her meals, and little things that a small child usually do. She's a bit senile already.

Along with the diet thing, people need to remember to cut out sodium. We can see that hypertension rates have increased along with people's daily sodium intake, historically. Our diets are saturated with the stuff and it is a leading cause of hypertension and kidney problems.

Yes sodium. We have to minimize our daily intake of sodium. Specially kids, if possible, they should not be allowed to eat junk foods, specially the salty ones.

You are correct. Hypertension can be controlled by good diet, avoidance of stress and religiously taking the prescribed medicines. I have a friend who is also hypertensive. She goes haywire whenever she neglects to take her medicine. In my case, I had high blood pressure when I was pregnant. My doctor sternly advised me to stop working so that I could avoid stress. However, my work was so demanding that I could not avoid it and as a result, I was admitted in the hospital until I gave birth three days later. Take care

Those people who have crossed the age 40, it is a must to check their blood pressure. High blood pressure is the cause of heart attacks. Most people who are suffering from high blood pressure and cholestrol problem will suffer heart attack problems.

Just like you, my husband's blood pressure would sometimes be up, though he is just in his 40's. He experienced having it at the age of 28. It runs in their family too, since his father has it and has been stroked already and is on lifetime medication. His other brother has it and is on medication too. But because of his hypertension, he is picky in what he eats. He would not eat fatty foods and be always on watch of what he eats. So he was able to maintain a normal BP now. He maintains a slim figure. But i told him, that it's not all in the foods, but on stress. So i told him that he should control his temperament specially with stubborn clients at work, because that contributes to having a high BP. Don't you think so too?

Yes, I agree with you on that. Stress is the greatest factor in almost all diseases. It contribute so much in our ailment. According to my sister's doctor the number 1 fact that trigger cancer is stress. My sister is cancer victim. She has just finished her eight (8) chemo sessions. So as much as possible we have to avoid stress also.

hello pahak627:) there are many factors that can be associated with hypertension. some of these are age, lifestyle, stress, health problems and a lot more. heredity or any family history of hypertension also plays a vital role in acquiring such condition. And i would agree with you that this is something that we can control. blood pressure monitoring, controlling of food intake (esp. fatty, salty food), proper exercise and having medical check-up can really help in preventing hypertension. SELF-DISCIPLINE is the biggest key to prevent hypertension.

I agree with you that self-discipline is the biggest key to prevent hypertension but how many people have self-discipline? I for one don't have it. However, I have regular check and I see to it that I take the medicines prescribed by my doctor.

It may be true that hypertensin and high blood pressure sure ddoes run in the family... I think though that a big percentage of someone acquiring hypertension may still be due to one's lifestyle and eating habits.
