As some of you know my husband and I bought an SUV (a 4WD) a couple of years ago. We bought it after our old pick-up truck died. The main purpose of this SUV was for my husband. His job required him to go to different job sites, which at times required him to go up to the snow, although it was used as the family car as well. However, things have changed since then. I'm now using it (mostly to get to and from work). My job is only a few miles from home. And although it does rain here, it certainly doesn't snow (well, nothing that sticks to the ground anyway), so a 4WD isn't really necessary...although it is nice to have. I was thinking of selling it for something a little more fuel efficient. However, it's lost resale value (like all used vehicles do) so chances are I won't be able to find anything near as nice or as reliable. Not to mention I really hate going through the whole process of buying and selling a used vehicle, including having to go to the DMV! It's such a PITA! LOL I'm thinking my boss may eventually want me to use it for work related duties, so I think I'll hold onto it...for now. Plus, an SUV can always come in handy with a family of 4, right? So, what about you? What you would do if you were in my shoes? Would you sell it or keep it?

I won't be able to fit into your shoes because it's too big for me. I will throw it away and keep the SUV instead. At least it can fit more than me in it.. lol Owning a SUV is a luxury because it's suitable for all kinds of road conditions and also being spacious, u'r able to carry a lot of things in it together with your family of 4. IT's good for all purpose and it's cool to be seen driving one around

I think personally you have already made your mind up, but you just need confirmation, which is fair enough, I think you would be right to keep it, I am sure you have already weighed up the pros and cons, for keeping it and getting rid of it, as you have stated in your discussion, so the answer is right there and I am sure others will agree with you too. Personally I would keep it, if you change your mind later on then the option is still there, sell it now and you could regret it, and you can't change your mind once its sold, and all that hassle trying to sell it and selling it at a loss, no brainer LOL! Keep it says Wolfie

Yep, I'm pretty sure I've made up my mind...I think! LOL I mainly just started this discussion to see what others would do in this situation as curiosity got the better of me. LOL You make some good points about keeping it. I certainly don't want to regret selling it...or go through such a hassle. But at the same time I can't help thinking that a smaller car is the way to go, especially with gas prices the way they are...

Buying another vehicle has to be thought of carefull especially taking into account of the fuel increases lately. It has to be practical as well as frugal and possible look good as well.

That's why I've been thinking of selling my SUV. To get something that's more practical and fuel friendly. Happy mylotting!

I would probably keep it unless I really needed the money. Having a spare car "just in case" is good. I think an SUV is nice for a family of four and if you can't get out of it what you can get while your in it, I think I would just keep it too.

I agree. Having a spare car is good. Even more so with being out in the country. It's not so much a luxury, but a necessity out here... By the way, I found out the resale value is higher than I originally thought. Which makes it that much more tempting to sell it. Though at the same time I still want to hold onto it. It's been so dependable, after all!

I am sorry I can't be of much help but if I we're you I would hang onto it until you can afford to get something more fuel efficient and reliable.goodluck in what ever you decide to do.

Thanks Tina. Chances are I'll be doing just that (hanging onto it, that is). But I won't let that stop me from looking around. Happy mylotting!

That's right don't let it stop you shopping around is good it gives you an idea on what you would like when you can get something more fuel efficient.

Well, if there is no longer a need for it, then get rid of it. But if you're going to need it for work, then hold onto it. You could always trade the vehicle in and you will not have to go through all the PITA work yourself. A car dealer will do all the paper work for you. But, thats up to you. If it were me, I would get something more efficient. Like maybe a Ford Focus or something like that. Thats what I would do.

But trades at the dealers never get what they're worth. And the prices on their used cars cost too much. Oh and please, don't even mention Ford's! I've had too many problems with too many Ford's in the past. I'd rather not deal with them anymore. If I do get a more fuel efficient car I'll go with a Honda, Toyota, or Nissan instead. Happy mylotting!

They might come with a warranty, but they usually cost extra. Unfortunately, I just don't have that kind of money to spend right now...

I am sorry to hear that you would by another car other then Ford. I know that Ford has improved 10 fold from what they used to be like. But, whatever you get should be a fuel efficient vehicle. I know that dealerships used cars are pricey, but they do come with a warranty, unlike some used car lots. If the vehicle you have now is working fine and not costing you a fortune to maintain, then hold onto it.

What is your husband using now? Is there any possibility he may need it again? Can you get a second car. We would get something used and keep this one as well.

Possibly, but not probably. He's using a sedan. But I'm not allowed to use it for work. It's strictly for the family...

I think you answered your own question..haha. I would keep it though. You know it is dependable and you don't know that about another car you would buy, especially if it is a used vehicle. Stay with what you know and trust, it will be worth it in the long run.

Well I know that. LOL I was just wondering what others would do. Still, you make an excellent point. Stay with what you know. That's exactly what I'm going to do...at least until I can't afford the gas anymore. LOL Happy mylotting!

I think I would go ahead and keep it too. I think you would be better off by using it for your needs. It will come in handy for alot of things.

I would keep it...I have an SUV...of course I live where it snow so that's a no brainer here..but you are right that you probably won't get what it's worth...not nearly as much as you should...they are handy to have for hauling etc.

True. They are handy for hauling things. I just haven't had to haul anything that big in a while, although that can always change...

If you want to keep it and think it would be useful, why are you debating selling it?

If it still runs, and you can keep it running, keep it. You will save so much money. My brother, who is a mechanic, says that if people keep their car up in maintenance, they can last them a lifetime.

dont sell it. our cars are very dear to the heart and it would be really sad to see it go. I have gone through this experience and it was very sad for me. the old car will always remind us of its comfy features that we get used to. we have a maruti omni which is now really old, we want to buy a new one but always end up thinking that we dont want to sell it.

I'm sorry, but I don't share the same feelings about it. As I stated above I've had too many crappy (aka old) cars in the past. Most of them didn't have any comfy features, so there was nothing for me to get used to. However, what really ruined it for me was when I bought a car that blew up a few months after I bought it. My poor husband worked his butt off (more so than usual), just so we could buy what we thought was a nice vehicle for a change. I remember being so proud of it when we got it. After it blew up, it ended up just sitting in my yard for a couple of years. Needless to say, it always depressed me whenever I walked by it...

If I won't be using anymore, I don't see any point of keeping it. Besides, it is hard to maintain a car.

I think you should keep it. You can always use it for your family, if your family is still growing then it will come handy and convenient.

to have a SUV with 4WD is so cool, and for me, it is a bliss if I had it. however, for you and just as you have mentioned, it is not necessary to own it because you just drive it to your office where is not far away. so as far as i am concerned, it is a good choice to sell it rather than keep. For an evident fact is that your SUV with 4WD would waste lots of gas and cause much pollution, so for the sake of the environment, just to make a right decision.

But I don't work in an office. I work in a kennel. As my job deals with animals, my boss may need me to haul them around from time to time. My SUV is perfect for that.

i think, you'll keep it....even i'll keep it such SUV...remember everything happens for reason...
