Is it weird for a 49 year old to go back to school?

While homeschooling my son I realized just how much I had forgotten from my high school days so, I decided to take an online high school course. My problem is when I tell people this they look at me funny and then they start to treat me different. I'm not illiterate or anything I just wanted a refresher of what I learned in school. Is that so bad?

Absolutely not!!!! We should be learning all the time. I think you're doing a great thing, and if more of us did the same, the world would be a better place. The brain is like any other muscle, use it or lose it. Good for you!

I thought it was quite common these days for senior people to return to school, I think it is wonderful, keep the mind active as I was told when I was looking after my mother with alzheimers, the brain is a muscle so exercise is great, so use it lose it is what we were told..

I never went to college so I started taking classes last year when I was 48, so no it isn't weird because no one is too old to learn and in fact, when we learn, it keeps us young..

One is never to old to learn and since I started, I have been on the Dean's List every quarter, not counting the summer quarter when I thought I could take this really hard math class.. Well, hard for me, even if I were 20 years old..I ended up withdrawing from that class..

I think that it is great that you are doing this for your son as well as yourself. If you want to go to school, that is your right. I am 30 and just recently finished taking a course online myself. There is NOTHING wrong with wanting to better yourself and if someone says that there is, there is something wrong with THEM not you. I think that the people who are treating you different should be ashamed of themselves. Friends are supposed to support you in the things that you choose to do, and if they aren't, they are not your friends. When I told my family that I was going back to school, I got nothing but support, no one said anything bad to me and they certainly didn't treat me differently. I hope that you do not let a few bad apples change you, your a smart person and you are doing a very good thing. Good luck and happy mylotting.

That's too funny! I mean really! Community Education offers parents brush up courses in algebra, you name it to help their children excel in school. You have two choices; 1 stop telling people, or 2 realize you are hanging around some very ignorant people! Rock on Wolf!

Hi, LLWolf, you had a very smart idea! The best thing for everyone of us is to learn more and more new things or refresh the old stuff. I still remember the problems I had, years ago, when I wanted to help my daughter. Most of my high school knowledge was out!
If somebody wants to laugh at you, you could ask him to answer a question from some of the tough disciplines like physics :D And then it will be your turn to laugh.

Yeah to forget sometime is must of the time easier than learning it. But not always from some of my subject i had a great teacher and i still know almost everything he did. He made much jokes about the curriculum and that is why i still know it now a days.

I don't think that it's weird at all. My mom went back to school when she was in her early 40s, and managed to get her B.A. and M.A. My best friend's mom just went back to school to get her M.A. and she's in her 50s. There were a few people in my university classes, who were easily in their 40s. So, no I definitely don't think that it's weird at all.

It's never weird for anyone to learn or re-learn things, formal or informally. It's great that you have the time to do so. I sometimes have problems helping my child with schoolwork since I've forgotten some of the things I've learned when I was at his grade level. Your situation actually is ideal to take an online course since you're homeschooling your child. Homeschooling isn't just tutoring or helping your child with his homework. You're actually acting as the teacher to him. You that means you have to know the subject matters quite well. So re-learning stuff by going back to school, online-wise or not, can be very beneficial for bot yourself and your child.

I don't know about others but me, who loves to learn, relearn and learn more, you're decision to return to learning is something admirable. I don't think trying to remember what was once forgotten is a strange thing...maybe because I see your situation the same as those who had experienced Amnesia and want to learn/remember their past. And remembering those lessons in an atmosphere that may have been felt a long time ago (online schooling, in your case) is not bad...if you know what I mean...

I admire you for your hunger for learning. Those people who treat you differently is just one of the narrow minded that they are too conventional, and they think that your act is not the norm, so they find it funny. Ignoring them is the best way. I hope you can continue your love of learning.

I think it is jsut good, more people must do this I think. But you only msut do this if you really want to do it. And the people that laugh about it I also can understand a bit, because they are also thinking back to their young ages.
But how long does that online course take and how does it work exactly?
I wish you much succes learning the subjects!

It is great that you want to take a refresher course so you can help your children with their studies. It is not strange but rather a wonderful way to keep your mind alert and retain information that you know you have forgotten.
There are some adults out there that have never worked a day in their lives. They are full time/ life time students.
You are never too old to learn. Those who look at you funny might need a course of their own.
Others, like myself take continuing education classes every year. Knowledge is a powerful tool and anyone who thinks it is odd isn't getting all they can in life.
Be proud and do well!

No it is not. Don't mind them and prove them that you can. My mom is 55 years old now and she continue her college education. We support her very much. We actually paid her tuition fees and help her finish her projects. As long as you have the perseverance to do the right thing for you to achieve your goal, I know you can make it with flying colors. Good luck!

That is just being narrow minded, learning is life and life is learning. There is nothing wrong in going back to school. In my country, schools accept senior citizens in elementary and high school more so in college. Just don't mind them, soon they will get used to having you in their class and gradually instill in their minds that there is no wrong in going to school even if one is older than the usual students. Lucky you because you still have time to attend classes. Good luck!

It is actually rather more common for people to go back to school at an older and older age for many reasons. There are just a lot of people who go back to school for various reasons at older ages and much older than 49 or so years old. I was shocked to see some of the older people in my class online and it just was rather astonishing that they would do the course load meant for people much younger.
But no it is not stranger at all. It is rather getting to be more common. The world has changed and it does seem like returning to school is rather the best concept to say the very least. There are just going to be many people who are going to be returning to school. So really not is not strange at all, it is getting to be rather common place.

More Power to you LLWolf. I salute you. The people who are laughing or looking at you funny should really look at themselves. I wish we have the Community Schools here so I could refresh my memory of what I've learnt in school. My daughters are just growing up and I will need all the help I can get. I know how easy it is to forget. When I passed out from College, I briefly went to teaching. I realised that time that I could not remember some basic stuff. Luckily it was only younger kids and easy to get the information. I am sure I have forgotten everything from High School - not to mention the fact that they are now learning completely different way/things.

Hi LL!
It's not wrong at all. In fact we are strongly encouraged to do so. It's for everyone good. Ignore those who said it's funny. It isn't bad idea but the good one. Your good effort will show to do them that you are better than them. Don't worry. Go ahead with it.(^^)
