My dog is sick :(

I got home this afternoon and Max won't budge from where he is lying. I had to drag him just to make him stand and he doesn't want to eat. According to my mother, Max got his shots this morning and he that's when he started to act weird. He was shivering and I thought it was just from lying down too long. But after a long while, his legs and hind muscles were still shivering. I'm really worried for Max and I'm hating my mother for taking Max to get a shot and then putting him into chains while he was feeling sick. I removed him from his chains and took him inside our house, covered him with a blanket and fed him in my hand. My poor, poor Max. I hope he doesn't die because of the shot.

You need to contact the vet NOW!!! The dog has had a adverse reaction to the shot and you need to know what to do to deal with it!!! You did right by bringing him back into the house and making him comfortable. Make sure that Max is eating (even if you have to feed him by hand) and make sure he is getting fluids if he can't drink from a bowl then slip ice into his mouth. Don't hate your Mom for what she did. Our dogs and cats have certain shots that they have to have to keep them healthy. Unfortunately, like humans, animals can have reactions to shots. When this happens we need to take extra care of them and make sure that they are warm and comfortable. Your Mom didn't think that the reaction was severe enough to keep him in and take extra care of him. But it was ignorance not meanness that prompted her actions. Forgive her, she isn't mean and didn't do it to be mean. Maybe the Max needed to go to the bathroom. Sometimes the shots will cause the animals to have diarrhea. Right now, the responsible thing to do is to call the vet and find out about the reactions and tell him what is happening with Max. I am praying for you and Max

Thank you very much for your prayers. I still have not taken Max to the vet but when I woke up this morning, he was doing better. I'm still at the office and if I return home and Max is doing bad again, I will take him to the vet. Thank you very much for your kind words regarding my mom.

I would still contact the vet. It is necessary for you to know if Max did have a serious reaction to the shot, and to find out what shot could have made the reaction and to remind the vet the next time Max needs the shot. Our furry companions are like humans to us, and if it was your child (which Max is) you would want to know all the allergies and reactions your child would have. The vet should be happy to give you the information you need about the shots and reactions. You paid for the treatment and since you paid for the vet's services you should be able to contact him and find out the "WHY" your dog reacted in the way he did.

I do have to tell you about a neighbor whose dog ate a three month supply of heart worm medication. They were in town and when they discovered what the dog had done they went straight to the vet. The vet tried to get the dog to vomit, which the dog had no intention of doing even with the medication that was supposed to make him throw up. So, after a couple of hours at the vets, they decided to take the dog home. The vets final instructions to the couple was "If he starts acting strange..." I can tell you from experience that the dog was strange to start with. Anyhow the couple looked at the vet with a quizzical look on their faces and the husband said "HE'S ALWAYS STRANGE, how are we going to be able to tell?" The vet had to admit "any stranger than usual". The dog suffered no harm by the way, and the dog live a long, happy, strange life. I am very glad that your Max is so much better, but like I said before, call the vet and tell him about the reaction.

Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry to hear this. :( I hope Max is feeling better soon! I know that my pets are like my babies and I just can't stand it when they are sick or in pain. Max is lucky that he has such a caring "parent", though. If he seems to be getting worse or doesn't improve within a few hours I would suggest calling the veterinarian who gave him the shots, just to see if this sort of reaction is normal and if you can do something about it at home or if you need to take him back in to the vet. If it doesn't hurt him, give him a pet/hug/snuggle from me.

I wish I can take him to a vet at this time but it's already late at night and I don't think the vet's clinic is still open at this hour. Thanks for the advice and the concern though. I just wish he gets better tomorrow.

These things always seem to happen at the most inconvenient times, don't they? *hugs* I'm so sorry. I'm not an expert by any means, but I'd suggest just keeping an eye on him and keeping him as comfortable as possible until the vet's clinic opens again. I'm sure that he feels much better knowing that you care. Just having his owner love and care for him while he feels ill must help some. Best of luck to you and Max!

I woke up this morning and I think he was feeling better. He was able to stand up by himself and he was doing some stretching. I'm just really glad he's doing better today than yesterday. Thanks so much for the concern.

I'm so sorry secretbear. I remember when I got my dog spayed and she was acting weird and all I could think of was that I didn't want anything to happen to her. I had to take her to the vet in the middle of the night because she just kept moving around and I wanted to make sure she was okay. I hope he gets better and if not maybe you should take him to the vets to see if the vets can do something. But other than what you're doing by covering him is good, and make sure to give him lots of love. Good luck!

Nah, he won't die because of that shot. IT's normal for them to act like that due to the effect of it. ONce the effect is gone in 1-2 days time, they will be back like normal. Much as dogs have natural healing capabilities, but they do need medical care as well. Short term shivering and cold, beats long term suffering of something right, secret? I know u care about Max, but he will be fine and now he should be stronger than before

Oh my...I hope Max is ok. It sounds like he is having a reaction to the shot..if he is not better soon, I would call the vet. Maybe they can give him something to counteract the shot. My little dog had a shot in her leg once and got a knot on it. She refused to use her leg and ran around on three legs for over a year. She lost muscle in it too. After a while I started working with her a little everyday and she uses all her legs now and the muscles are built back up. I have been afraid to give another one of those shots again because of it but they really do need their shots. They can get a lot sicker without them. Take care and I hope he is feeling better now.

Thanks a lot, Jen. Max is back to himself now. Thank God. It's scary how these things can go wrong when in fact they are done to get things better.

I would agree, that Max has had an adverse reaction to the vaccination. I know you said he seems to be doing better today, but I would definitely encourage you to call them and let them know Max's reaction. Its important for them to chart it, so that if any future medications are given, they know what signs to look for and how best to take care of him.

Sick Doggie - It is possible he is having a reaction.
If you have the resources take Max to the doctor with a list of what shots he's had recently. It is possible he is having a reaction. That isn't your mother's fault as every once in a while something can go wrong with vaccines.

Thanks for the advice. I'm not sure but I think Max's last rabies shot was last year. It was my brother who took him to the clinic. The second shot was yesterday.

Poor little Max. Why did your mother do that? Did she have to rush off to work? Doesn't Max have a little fenced in area? I hope your love will make him well.

No, my mother is retired so she stays at home all day. She just doesn't like Max running around so she had him chained. .

Oh....I hope your baby will be okay. I just prayed for him. I hate it with someones pet is sick. It is so hard to take. Let me know if he's okay. Probably, one of the shots didn't set with him right. Call the vet and tell them how he's behaving. Maybe they can tell you something to do.

Sometimes animals have a reaction to the vaccinations they get. If he seems to be doing better, than I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just calling the vet and asking them if the reaction was normal will ease your mind. If the vet doesn't think you should ignore it, they'll tell you on the phone to bring him in.

So how is Max now? I hope he is okay and feeling a lot better. My pug was the same way whenever he had his shots. Come to think of it, so is my daughter. But if their energy doesn't seem to go away after a day, then it's one definite sign that something is not right. Sending prayers over to your Max now.

He was doing better this morning when I checked up on him. He can now stand on his own and he was doing some stretching. I just realized last night how much I love Max. I was crying last night when I thought of him dying. But my worries are gone now. He's doing better and that means a lot to me.

Oh my God! I hope that Max will be better. Get in touch with the vet as soon as you can. It's the only way you'd know what could be wrong with your dog. I really wish Max better health.

You may hate what your mother did, but actually hate your mother? That's ridiculous. Call the vet and let him know Max's reaction to the shots. He may be allergic.

Hi Secretbear! How old is max? When my dog had her anti rabies shot, she was also not feeling good for about a week. She has a fever and she don't want to eat. Maybe it is beacause of the shot. Hopefully Max will get better, let us pray for your dog.
