Where Can I Find A Good Employer I Will Be Happy With

United States

I have been out of work for some time, but I have been very hesitant to return to work, because my last employer overworked me in a job where I went no where, and most of the time I had to deal with overbearing managers who knew less than me about the work. I felt unappreciated, underpaid, and like a slave. Is there anyone out there that is happy with the work they do? what field of work could i enter that i might find a rewarding experience? I do not feel I can go back to work unless I know things will be better than my last job.

I think its a common problem. If you are working for someone else then you have to bear whatever they say. Bosses are always wiser and smarter than there employes whatever is their quality and qualification. And I dont think there is any sector where you can find independence and respect if you work under some other people. Why not start your own business ;)

I disagree sarnot. Just because you work for someone doesn't mean that you have to bear whatever they say. they are NOT always wiser and smarter than their employees and believe it or not, there are actually some bosses out there who respect and value their employees. You just have to find them, which can be a real challenge.

Bad decisions in my past have lead to bad credit for me so stating my own business would be very difficult. I do make a certain amount of money at home, but it by no means replaces the money I was making at work. I make most of my money at home on writing sites, but most of these sites pay so little for each article it's hard to generate income that way.

@suebee, whatever you disagree or agree with me but I am totally agree with you. I told bosses always smarter and wiser than me it not means they are, its what they think themselves. Yes, there are some bosses who really respect their employes but they are not too many in numbers. @PhillyDreamer, "Failure is the pillar of success". So, don't be upset and do whatever you want. You failed once in your own business it not means you will never win. Just try man.

Hey PhillyDreamer. Unfortunately, in today's economy it is sometimes difficult to find a job. Don't let a bad past employer deter you from trying again. I understand that it may be discouraging, especially if you felt unappreciated but not all employers are bad employers. Personally I am happy with my work. I'm in healthcare, a PSW (Personal Support Worker) and even though the job is less than glamourous I can honestly say that I enjoy it. It has it's faults like any others but I am willing to overlook most of them. And very often managers know less about the job than the employees do but I find that, obviously they weren't hired for their ability to do the job but presumably for their managerial skills. That's not to say in any way that they are good managers as there are many managers out there who are not good at what they do. I find that all too often a manager sits behind a desk making decisions that effect the employees and how the job is done without having any real knowledge of the job itself. Not a good system to be sure. I also think that education is a key aspect to employment. Generally speaking the more knowledge/education one can manage to acquire the more job opportunities you have for employment. Education, coupled with experience is what most employers are looking for.

My last job involved sales and customer service. I was also an assistant manager which gave me some management experience. My problem isn't so much finding a job, but finding the right one. I have turned down several offers after observing how obnoxious the manager acted towards their employees.

Honestly I would love a job where i could take advantage of my writing skills. I have thought about going to school to take up some writing courses. I know i will never return to the field of work I was in before, although the skills can help me in different fields.

Again, don't let the behaviour of someone else deter you. I know it sounds like a cliche but perhaps if you worked for one of those places with obnoxious managers you could make a difference? I fully understand your frustration though as a lot of managers seem to have the same mentality, that they are somehow above the lower paid employees. Maybe it's time to look into opportunities other than sales? I know when I changed jobs it was to a totally different field. I used to be in office work. Actually I was a computer operator at a police station in a major city. Now I am in healthcare. Go figure but it is a refreshing change. Sometimes change is exactly what we need.

I know working under a terrible boss is so hard, it is not easy job to please him or her everyday, but you need money and happiness too, and now you have a twins to take care of, you need money very much, I suggest you to open a part time business, else you can search until you find the right employer that appreciate you.

I lived under the mentality that I had to deal with terrible bosses cause I needed money to survive, but I know now the most important thing is making sure I spend time with my family and enjoy life. I can't work for a boss that sees me as a machine that needs to keep going till he's made enough money.

I do feel the same way Philly. The kind of job I am dealing right is a pain in the a_s. LOL I am one-man-team, doing all these and those yet underpaid and most of the time I receive my salary so late. It's a wrong choice for getting this job.

It's not fair. It used to be a man could have a job and keep his dignity, but too many employers are on a power trip these days.

Unemployment rate in many countries is high these days. What they have in mind is that there are more eager people awaiting in the line to have our jobs. They want us to do everything or else find another employer.

Well I took my services away from my last company, and I tell them find someone else capable of doing what I do. There may be plenty of people in line for my job, but you will be hard pressed to find someone who does it as well as me.

Well, I understand your feeling when you haven't had a good employer. If you are really unhappy with it, you can leave and find another job. it is not easy to live when you are frustrated with doing work. There are many chance for you to find a good employer and good working environment with good income also. Best luck for you!!!

I used to have the same problem before so what I did was I asked several of my close friends if they recommend me to their company since we are all in the same field of job anyway. I trust their opinion on this because they have been in their company for several years now so it means that it is bearable. Luckily, one of those who helped me succeeded. I am now working at a company and with a boss that respect and value me as an employee.

Having friends you can network with is a valuable asset. Unfortunately most of my contacts work for my old company so that wouldn't work to well for me. I need to network more.

Being happy in your work is something that is vital in all of our lives, because we spend more time working than we spend doing anything else. For this reason, it can be horrible when we don't like our jobs because of the fact that they're causing us so much stress. When you get a job interview you can ask what will be expected of you in the role, and you should have a better boss than last time. You need to remember that the boss from your previous job is in the minority, and the majority of employers are actually great with regards to giving their employees what they need.

I must be cursed with bosses. I prided myself on my ability to work with any kind of supervisor, but as I grew older my tolerance for insufferable people diminished. I was always the go to person, but the go to person is usually the one who takes the most abuse.

well i wish you all the luck in your new job hunting, i know it was hard for me in almost the same way.. but i did luck out and find something i like alot and plan to keep i only work part time 4 days a week 4 hours a week and i work by myself no bosses over me i do a breakfast bar for our hotel.. and the owners are seldom there on my early morning hours.. i am really happy i found it. but on a minus side if there is one, every job will have a few things you dont like that is just lifefor me and this job, when on the rare occasion my boss does come in she will go over everything i cleaned very close and usualy find something i did wrong or did not do. any i get very irritated about that.. but it is not something i will quit my job over.. i one day hope to do it the way she wants and then she will leave me alone so i try harder knowing i need to please her.. thank God she dont come very often :) but i use her to motivate me to do better and it works again good luck..

I think bosses take that stance so we are afraid to ask for more money. The fact is they won't do the job themselves, but don't even have the decency to say thank you or good job.

Right now, I'm not totally happy but I'm doing my best to like this job. It is the source of my livelihood. I work in a hospital as a nurse - 12 hour shift for 4 to 5 days a week. I'm exposed with different kinds of people in a different situation every day, pay is just enough to cover food and other expenses. What makes work rewarding? It depends on every person. I think, you can put up your own business, start from scratch - a small one, or have someone close to you or put up a partnership together with your friends - with common views in life. In here, you are free from overbearing bosses and other stuff. I believe that in order for us to get a better job, we need to update our credentials (i.e. attending affordable lectures, free online update/trainings, enhancement crash course) in this way, you may be more than prepared to apply for that job and able to get that better job without knowing it.

I agree networking is always a good way to find a good career. I hope to some day be able to sustain my lifestyle by working from home. Having no boss is the best kind of boss.
