My cat won't eat anything but cat food!

Ok so we got our cat a little over a week ago and we've tried treating it with canned salmon, and pieces of chicken. He's ten years old, mind you. He just leaves the fish and chicken alone and goes right for the cat food! He will eat Temptations cat treats, though. In a way I'm kinda sad, I really want to treat him and have him eat meats and fish but perhaps he's too old and set in his ways. I imagine if he was a kitten I'd probably be able to give him fish and meat.

You know, cats are certainly of their own opinions.
Maggiepie knew a cat they called Wonder because they wondered where she came from, why she would ONLY drink water from the faucet at a certain drip speed, why she hated tuna and catnip...
I have had a few cats that won't eat the soft cat treats, only the hard ones, like Temptations.
I have to say, that I would LOVE to have a cat (or 10) that didn't want "people" food, it would mean we could eat with less nagging from the catnip gallery!

Picky cats, eh! Well, at least I know from his previous owners what Kitty likes, and what his habits are, that sort of thing. Kitty doesn't even play with any toys either, kinda strange. As for cat treats, I didn't realise there were soft cat treats, just the hard kind. Well, I suppose they have everything out there these days.

My daughter has a cat like that. She got her from the animal shelter, so she has probably only been fed cat food, which is sad. Think if you'd only ever been fed McDonald's meals and had no concept of a turkey dinner, for instance, or prime rib or lobsters, all good food.

That makes sense on a human level, I just thought since cats go on animal instinct they'd prbably just automatically go for the fish, but I guess not. I'm glad that I'm not a unique situation, in a way, that is, but still I'd rather see him eat some nutrition. Oh well, I'll ceraintly spoil my future kitten when I get him LOL.

It's good that he wants the cat food. Just be sure you are buying good cat food as there are so many out there that will not be good for him. I try to stay away from the tuna based foods as that will create problems. You might want to have a look here:

Okay, thank you for the link, I skimmed through it initially, but one article title did catch my eye and that's the one about table food. I mean I want to give him real meat and fish and I'll keep on trying to give it to him over time. Right now we use Friskies cat food, and that seems pretty good. I think Whiska's brand of treats are also okay. I can understand the reservation behind feeding our cats stuff that's not natural. Oh well I'll keep trying and I'm going to save that link for future reading, it does look pretty good. Thanks for sharing.

we cannot force the cat if he doesn't want to eat those things..cat food is alright too if that is what he wants,,it also has a lot of nutrients needed for him to be fit and healthy..or you can try not having anything but the chicken and fish..and see if he doesn't have anything to eat, no cat food..he will just eat those..

Little cats prefer mother food becuase they are too small and cannot eat those food which we give to them. It is quite natural. Anyway as a a cat lover you should take care of her with her needs. Now that is the thing what you have to do now.

Our cat we adopted is a much older cat, he's 10 years old, well the previous owners said he might be between 8 and 10 years old. So like Stowyk said above he might just be set in his ways because he never has been introduced to meat and fish before in his life. And that's a long time in cat years. If he was only a kitten I'd be able to slowly introduce them, I mean it's natural for cats to want meat and fish as opposed to artifical cat food.

Thumbs up! What a wonderful owner you are. There are people who post here who defend people who eat cats and think it's funny, refuse to buy flea medication for them and I am considering getting rid of my cat interest in my interests because I cannot stand reading the cruelty anymore, it's starting to affect my sleep.
And here YOU are trying to FEED your cat good food. I cannot believe it, finally a decent human being. You made my night.
Well, he does need the commercial food for the taurine and vitamins. But keep trying. I have some cats that like fish, others don't. Some will eat only chicken. I buy these packets of deli meat called Buddig for them as treats and none like the beef but love the other kinds. All cat's are different with different likes, keep trying you might stumble on something he likes. I give mine warm lactose free milk in the morning, they cannot digest lactose, maybe he would like that?
Or try some shelled shrimp. Mine like canned Mackerel every once in a while. When I get Chinese they also like the part inside the Won tons and I buy them a meat appetizer like meat on a stick because here it doesn't have a lot of sauce on it. Good luck.

Oh I forgot to mention that I have what I call my veggie cat. Believe it or not she absolutely loves vegetables. She even drinks the water from the canned vegetables! Corn, beans, even asparagus water. It's disgusting to watch but I let her because she loves it, ha ha. Some of the others steal broccoli and other vegetables off my plate too.

Hello Masihi. I don't understand why Your cat not wanting fish or chicken Is a problem. Years ago We fed our cat table scraps such as meat chicken or fish. I believe this led them to jumping on the counter and eating any thing left out to thaw out for supper. Later hen we got another cat we only fed her and her son cat food and they never did bother any thing left out on the counter. They never even got on the table. We gave them treas treated with hair ball treatment.

Some cats can be very finnicky eaters indeed. i have a couple of cats that even have to smell their cat food before they will eat it. yet i have a couple of other cats that will eat anything they see. It is strange what a cat will or won't eat. Cats can be just as choosy as humans in some ways.

You can try mixing the treats in with your cats favorite food to get him used to them, that sometimes works. A 10 year old cat usually has made up their mind about how they want things though! With my cats I got them young and gave them a variety of food brands and treats all along so they aren't SO finicky but they definitely have their favorites.

your cat won't eat anything but cat foood? your cat is a cat. what is the issue here? if the cat wasn't eating cat food then perhaps i could see what you were getting at but i'm pretty confused about this. the title caught my interest.

Our cats have never had cat food. They eat meat, none of that tinned stuff with the horrible jelly. They would not even eat that I don't think. The only tinned food they get is tinned tuna. We buy the stuff that is sold for humans.

I think your cat don't want to eat fish or other meat you offer because it used to be treated only with cat food.
Well, I don't have cat, but I have turtle.. :)
Why don't you try mix some meat that you cut in dice with the cat treat? Or maybe in the beginning, start introduce meat by dip the meat into melted cat treat. Melt some cat treat, then dip the meat you want to feed into the melted cat treat. I did it with my turtles when I want to introduce vegetable.

Oh, he is 10 years old already so that it is hard to change his eating habit.
I have a mother cat she doesn't like to eat cat food at all, she loves to eat meat and fish but Noo, 3 months old, she love to eat cat food so much...
Sometime i am lazy to cook and feed them all cat food, but the mother cat doesn't eat it...then i have to cook again...
