I'm having to get another anti-virus installed very very soon and I need a firewall program to use as well as McAfee will be charging like $90. for one year of theirs and I just don't have that kind of funds right now to spend anymore on it. Can some of you suggest a free firewall program and a free anti-virus to use and how long have you been using it? Does it all work great?

i dont use any firewall program and i dont think you need one with avast, avast have many real time shields, file system shield, mail shield, web shield, p2p shield, instant messaging shield, network shield, script shield, script shield, and behavior shield. those shield work before a virus infect your computer and inform you where the virus come from. check their website for details.

Either use Avira or AVG free version. By the way, AVG virus is much cheaper than McCaffe. It's somewhere near $56. Just check out AVG's site. I think there's also a free one month trial on their site. Good luck, Nailtech! Stay away from those nasty viruses.

Try Microsoft Security Essentials [MSE]. It is free and it is Microsoft, so very reliable. I had a lot of problems with viruses, but since I started using MSE, I have not had any problems at all.
It takes time to install and do the first update. Then the first full scan to remove viruses takes hours. But then your pc will be almost as good as new. And it will only require to be checked regularly, and MSE has settings so that it will automatically do a 'quick scan' at the time you set. You have to update it weekly, but that only takes about 5-10 minutes.
And you don't need Firewall software, Windows has its own. Just make sure it is switched on.

You're welcome. I have using Microsoft Security Essentials for the past one year, and have not had any problems since. I hope you find the kind of software you need soon.

Avast has antivirus and webwall all in one program along with a bunch of other monitoring capabilities. My computer got infected with trojans/virus' the first of this year when I had AVG. A techie friend cleaned it up and put the Avast on and I've not had any problems. I'm extremely pleased with the Avast. You need to take a look.

I had McAfee for a while years ago when I had AOL. Then I got a very bad virus on my computer that twisted itself around files and really was being hard to get rid of. I was advised by a tech at McAfee to get Norton. I did that and payed through the nose for it for about three years. Then i happened across a discussion on here about 'free anti-virus'. I now use Ccleaner, AVG and some mall wear anti-virus. Have been using these about a year with no problems. If you go to www.downloads.com and search for free anti-virus' you can see what one is best for you.

Norton is the A #1 anti-virus out there and McAfee is a freeby used by Dell and some others. I had Norton for a few years and now use AVG which I feel is just as good. Live and learn.

A tech at McAfee told you to get Norton, how ironic is that. I guess he really didn't believe in his own company. That's pretty bad when that happens. I have heard others say they don't care for McAfee, either. Thanks for the hint about the web site too to download them. I had Norton many years ago and I didn't care for it at all.

Yep, you have to live and learn sometimes, that is how we get by. I will either use AVG or Avast I think after hearing all of these suggestions. Its just hard to switch after using one thing for so many years. And no MacAFee has not always been perfect.

I really don't love to spent money fro antivirus or for other software. I think it is just mealy a waste of money, with that money which I spent for buying the antivirus or others I could use it for other things in my life.
I have Avast free antivirus me. I feel it provides me a good security and along with it it is too fast and I think you can make use of the free version of avast. It is much enough for you.

Have you tried Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware? They're not exactly free, but their anti-virus system is very high-quality. They update (at least) twice a day.. which may sound a bit irritating, but it doesn't notify. Spybot S&D (Spybot : Search and Destroy) is a great freeware device. It contains a real-time anti-virus protection program as well as keeping your registries intact. Updates are completely free (like Malwarebytes') and is a great scanner when you realize you actually do have a virus.
I've been using both of these programs for nearly 5 years and after nearly having to buy a new piece of hardware, I'd like to say it's a pretty awesome pair to complement each other. If however, you feel that neither of the programs would be helpful, I suggest watching this video : www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuwiFou_FWw
P.S. Turns out Avast is very popular as well. Guess you could try that out. :)

On my computer I have a combination of several anti-virus utilities, which I use together for best possible results. All of them are free, or have free editions. For real time scanning I use Microsoft Security Essentials, which will scan your computer in real time for viruses. Malwarebytes is one of the best antivirus software out there, and they have a free and paid version. The free version is basically the paid version without the realtime scanning, and you can use the free version for as long as you want. Superantispyware is a great antimalware utility to use with malwarebytes, as they both work really good together. Superantispyware also has a portable edition, which comes in handy on a usb flash drive. Also, if you can spend a little bit of money for a superb product, get malwarebytes pro edition. It is very cheap ($25) and has firewall, realtime scanner, and website blocker. I have the pro edition, and it works great on my machine. No viruses whatsoever for 1 year, and I am very active on the internet constantly checking out new websites.
