Lipsticks that actually dry your lips out

I try to remember to put something on my lips all the time because I was believing I was protecting them from chapping but recently I heard on TV (The Doctors) that there are lipsticks that actually dry out your lips?? I was noticing recently my lips were chapped in the summer - which is really odd. So I stopped putting lipstick on and instead I put this colored balm on and they're no longer chapped?
Go figure. I was using Revlon Colorstay cuz otherwise I really like it. Anyone else finding this?

Hello there Christine. I'm a person who likes putting on lipstick everytime I go out. I just do it because I think, when I'm not wearing any on my lips, my face looks pale. I just love buying some lipstick of different shades but I think my favorite shade is red. Last time, I ordered something with a friend. I saw a new item in the brochure so I wanted to try it. It's red and I liked it because its look is different from the others that I already have. When I got it, my co-worker also liked it. She bought two of them with different shades. After two weeks of using, my co-worker noticed that she was having dry lips. I think she had an allergy on what we bought. When I tried to use it that day too, I noticed that my lips also became a bit dry. Like the lining of my lips became a bit dark. I didn't like it. It also felt a bit itchy. From that time, I stopped using that lipstick I ordered. I felt scared if I use it again, I might have allergy too. I don't want to spend more in buying some medication. I think, the drying of my lips depends on the lipstick I use. If it's glittery or so glossy, at times I feel itch on my lips. When it's just ordinary, no glitters or something, I think my lips are okay. I think it depends on the brand or the ingredients they used too. Or sometimes, some women's lips are just sensitive. Sometimes, the drying of the lips also depends on the weather. It's good my lips are just okay this time. They're not so dry even though I usually put on lipstick nowadays. :)

Hi, bit late with a reply - sorry I haven't been able to be on here for more than a few minutes at a time lately.
Yeah, I think I would avoid anything that actually made my lips itch let alone dry them out. Who knows what they're putting in these cosmetics these days. I'm sure they're using some cheaper chemicals and somehow not really testing them.

I haven't noticed this personally ... mostly because I don't generally wear lipstick. However, I have noticed that there are some guys that wear it and then want to kiss me, and their lips are all dried out and nasty - I mean, I don't mind them wanting to feel pretty and all, but couldn't they at least put some flavored lipgloss on to soften up those dry, chapped lips and make them taste good or is that really too much to ask?

I am wondering why you are wondering about these places I am frequenting, Orson, especially since one of those guys was you ... or are you conveniently forgetting about that part?

The first time I used lipsticks, it dries my lips. Maybe because I didn't know lipsticks could be drying and I didn't apply lip balms. Now that I am applying lip balms, it has definitely helped a lot in moisturizing my lip. It doesn't dry anymore.

I put blistix medicated balm on at night to fix the damage from the lipstick, I always thought it was the dry weather before. Seems silly to put makeup on that causes dryness!!

I have noticed that too. However, I can't go out without wearing one. I don't have any choice but to put on lipstick or else, I won't be satisfied with my appearance. My lips weren't that pinkish so it's better to put some color on them. Happy myLotting!

I'm with you I just feel like my face is all one color and nothing stands out without makeup but that's probably because I use it and got used to seeing myself that way. Same with my hair - it's long and although I would love to cut it short because of all the care it takes I can't seem to do it.

I tried the color stay once-- it didn't come off for a day, and it chapped my lips. What I do now is I only put it on when I need it, and when I get home I take it off with some chap stick, then I wear the chap stick to fix my lips.
The way I see it, if my other half wants to kiss me, then he wants to kiss ME, not some funny tasting anything LOL. I only wear serious makeup if I have an interview, or to formal occasions. No more skin problems :-)

I didn't like the other stuff when I was, let's say out on a date - it kisses off. But if it causes chapped lips, whose gonna kiss me??

True but I always liked the staying power of lipsticks over glosses but not at the cost of chapped lips - geez..

I remember hearing that always putting chapstick on would dry your lips out. Seems funny, huh. I use lip gloss because lipstick always seemed to dry my lips out and it would come off flaky. Tinted lip balm is something I've tried, but I like the shine gloss gives me.

I do like the tinted lip balms now but they don't stay on. I was using a "colorstay" kind, you know where it stays on for however long. It didn't feel dry when it was on, but I think it was causing the chapping.

hi christine, i think lipsticks are naturally drier than lip balm.
since young, i always have the problem of chapped lips, regardless it is summer or not. i started putting lip balm when i'm younger.
and now, i usually put lip gloss. for one, it's more moistouring and i prefer it's shine compared to lipstick!

Hi, thanks for your reply. This discussion popped up on the top of my list because of an entry and I realized I hadn't commented back to some. Shame on me!!
You're right balms are much better for your lips but I just liked color that stayed on but not so much anymore. I'd rather not have dry lips!

hi,
i also had an experienced of that,i put a lipstick in my lips because i thought that it will moisturize my lips from chopping, but i didn't know that the lipstick i used was fake and it will made my lips more dried and darken,so i stopped using that lipstick.
