Do you think that anyone should/is capable of driving?

Unfortunately, here in Greece it is so easy to get a license. Anyone can pay and get lessons since the lessons are given by private companies and not the state. It is practically an industry, they control politicians, the prices and decide how you get your license. But everyone gets a license, even people that are not capable of driving since it is a very complicated procedure. Our mind is racing and each part of our body is doing something different. For me it is not a right but an obligation, an obligation to drive safely keeping in mind that a car/motorcycle could kill someone. But driving schools do not teach drivers about safety and respect to other vehicles or pedestrians. All they want is to get their money. More students more money. More money, more bad drivers. What is your view on this? What happens in your country? How do people drive?

I feel bad when people drive rashly, without caring for others and their life.Thousand in my country die due to rash driving of our drivers.Wish everybody would become careful and responsible about their life and others.

It sure is a shame. I have seen videos fron cities in India and it seems there are no rules or traffic lights.

I'm in the United States and no longer have a Driver's License couldn't pass the eye chart test. There is a written test and that was easy. Personally, I think people should be required to take the written and eye chart every 10, as some of the people driving clearly have vision problems or they have forgotten many of the rules on the road like signalling, stopping at red lights and don't park on the rail road tracks. The last one has been a big problem and there have been many deaths in my area.

I'm in Southern California and people think they can get past the gate even though the train is using its horn to announce its coming now. Also we hear the bells ding. Its terrible to know people are losing their lives.

Fishmomma, I agree that people should retake the written tests every ten years-or sooner, especially if they are rewriting the rules of the road! And doctors could help with the vision portion by submitting lists of people with severe vision problems-not everyone is that honest! Or if they have a medical condition that could potentially cause a problem and interfere with one's ability to reason or react quickly, like a stroke. When I was hospitalized in 1994 with a possible stroke, my neurologists had told me that they would have to report my name to a state-wide database, and I could potentially lose my license. Fortunately, I wasn't a resident (I was hospitalized in Pennsylvania but a resident of and licensed in New Jersey), so it was a moot point. Are your railroads not on raised beds then? Ours (New Jersey and Pennsylvania) usually are. But with the great number of rural roads here in Pennsylvania, they are winding and often aren't lit as well as main roads, making them quite dangerous for people who aren't familiar with them.

Here in Greece, you get the license and then have to pass the next test at 65! That's why a lot of old people kill and killed in car accidents. Park on the rail road tracks? Nice... At least you have gates, we have aome places that don't have gates. Accidents happen all the time...

Here in the USA, individual states make the rules. Some states allow licenses to be issued to youth as young as 15, while others wait until youth are 17, like in New Jersey. Often youth licenses carry additional restrictions and regulations, ranging from how late one can be out driving daily, to the number of people in the vehicle. When I learned (in New Jersey), students were required to take a written examination, then spend an additional time behind the wheel of a simulator prior to taking the examination. After that, you could apply for a learners permit, but there was no additional behind the wheel requirement. I think I took six hours with the instructor, but by then, I had countless hours of practice already logged. Now it is MANDATORY for children to take six hours of behind the wheel before being granted that permit (in New Jersey), BUT that requirement is waived if they wait until they are 17 before they obtain their permit. I think the requirements should NOT be waived for anyone-we have the worst drivers here, and by requiring them to have reflectors on their licenses only makes them targets-the first day my daughter received her permit, she was tailgates and forced to drive faster than she was comfortable! That wan an eye opening experience!

Kostas, If she was obeying the speed limit (55 miles per hour), then she was in the right. The drivers in New Jersey are known for intimidation, and once these tags came out, inexperienced drivers are being forced to adhere to bad drivers' habits.THEY should learn the rules of the road (speed limits) and learn that tailgating is not only dangerous, it is considered a form of intimidation. I'm not sure about every school, but I know that my daughter received driving instruction in school, as I did. The reason she didn't go to get her permit was because neither of us could afford to send her to a driving school at that time, something required if someone is merely 16 when they receive their permit. But she's been practicing since she was 13 or 14 on our private property, and is quite adept behind behind the wheel.

Before learning to drive a car in a practical way the person must be over 17 years old, 16 years old if physically disabled. The person can have driving lessons with an approved driving instructor. The lessons can be one hour or two hours per week. Once the person has lots of driving experience he or she might get further practice in their mom or dads car. To teach a person to drive the person must be over 21 years old with three or more years driving experience. Before booking the practical driving test the person must pass his or her theory test which includes hazard perception test done on a computer. There can be weeks of waiting for a practical driving test. It includes a show me and a tell me question in the car. Then it involves driving and following the examiners instructions. It make the person feel nervous. The pass rate is around 50 per cent. Too many minor faults or one major fault then the person will fail his or her practical driving test. I passed my practical driving test in February 2010. I drive as carefully as I can respecting other road users. I think of bikes and motorcycles and keep a safe distance away from there. Most road users drive in a safe way in my home country. The people follow the Highway Code and obey road signs shown. Standards are high and much is expected when a person takes his or her driving test. The person has to drive safely and do as he or she is told. During the first two years after the person passes his or she test then if he or she gets six or more points against him or her then he or she could lose the driving license. Then he or she would have to pass an extended time driving test to get their license back. Police can hand out points which are awful to have on a driving license. Speeds have to be obeyed.

For many years I cycled on my bike so therefore I know to protect cyclists when I am driving. I know that a person on a bike might go left to stay safe but really be going right. I stay back if I see a person on a bike about to turn to keep them safe. I know motorbikes can move much faster than cars and they sometimes dart into and out of traffic. Before moving I check my mirrors and do a final check of my blind spot. That would show if a motorcycle is just in that area. I know some pedestrians step out so I slow down and stop if necessary. It was in my exam and I keep this knowledge always. I have further thought about it myself.

It is good that the exams are strict. Do they teach you to respect bikes/motorcycles/pedestrians, or have you thought about it yourself? because that is my objection in driving, respect for others.

I do agree with you that there should be rules and regulations for driving and should be governed by the state. Here in america it is a state thing. Each state controls the license and also issues them to drivers that have passed a written test as well as a driving test. But we still have bad drivers here. And also drivers that do drink and drive. Driving can be hazardous if one does not know what they are doing.

intertia, do you mind telling me what state you live in? I received my license from New Jersey (driving age is 17 here), but currently live in Pennsylvania where the driving age is 16. Do you think that perhaps some rules SHOULD be the consistent? I recall being a teenager passenger with a group of friends that visited New York city and were stopped by the police because we had made a right turn on red. It is legal in New Jersey, unless there's signage telling us otherwise; but in New York city (and possibly the state), it was illegal.

Scorpiobabes, it is not legal to make a turn on a red light here in NYC. It maybe legal in NJ but now here. And in new york you have to be 18 to be driving a motor vehicle. I know there are differences in every state. Since I am from NYC, when I do drive in NJ I always stop for red lights. One time someone behind me was beeping, at that time I did not know we could turn on red. But it is the NY in me I guess. LOL. But each state has their own laws and rules. For the most part driving in any state is similar. KOSTAS, yes, there are bad drivers everywhere. And the police to try and do their job to the best they can.

Hello,I'm also a greek citizen who lives at Greece and what you're saying is completely correct.Almost everybody can get his license and maybe this is why there are many car accidents here in Greece. If you're incappable of driving you can give your examiners a Bribe so you can "pass" your driving tests without the fear of not getting your license. So as you understand things here are really out of controll and somebody should put an order as soon as possible,so there won't be as much car accidents by the incappable drivers!

Too many accidents. The biggest percenatge in Europe. The state should include safety and driving courses in scholl instead of stupid things like religion courses. How can you ONLY teach about Orthodox Christianity in schools (in 2012) when we have immigrants who are muslims, catholics and lots of other religions???

It might be easy to get a driving licence here in Greece, but it took me four months to renew my English licence when I lost it. Lots of proof had to be given from England and then translated into Greek. This was done quickly in England but sat on a desk in Greece for months, until I got really desperate and made a nuisance of myself. Now the taxes have increased for two cars I doubt that many students will be needing lessons in school. I think the Orthodox church could take the initiative in schools and press home the needs for honesty to help put an end to people obtaining licences by bribes.

Here in China, you need to pass a written test on driving knowledge as well as driving test before you can get a driving license. It is a responsible act for drivers. If one is not able to pass these two tests, he or she is not able to get the desired driving license, not shall he or she drive a car on the road. Take care.

If private company give driving lesson to a student and the state control the examination before a person is given a driver license, then i guess it is alright. If both functions are control by private company, and is becoming a for profit industry, then i can see what you meant and the grave consequences come later. Over here, you can take driving lesson from a private driving school owned by a company, then after you finish the duration of the course, you can apply for a license and go for a test drive and examination conducted by the state's public safety department. Both are mutually exclusive events control by two different entities. You still have to pay for the private tutorial fee to the company and the exmination fee to the state, the difference here is instead of paying just one party from the beginning till the end of getting a license, you have to pay two parties. Go to a driving lesson won't necessarily meant that you can pass the test road and examination test. It is all up to the test instructor.

Test instructors here in Greece are bored public servants. They do what the private companies tell them to do just for extra money.

Well, in my country (Italy), to drive, you obviously get a driver's license, claiming the necessary examinations of practice and theory. In fact, when you are stopped by traffic agents the first thing you ask is, "Kindly license and registration!" (the certificate to establish that the vehicle has not been stolen). Can not deny that, however, (and this is just a minority) I believe that in Italy there is the possibility of obtaining a driving license, simply paying out large sums of money. So this is a very serious problem! For each vehicle, if misguided can be a fatal weapon! is really obscene thinking of putting on the roads drivers who are not able to bring a vehicle in accordance and in compliance with the letter of the rules of the road! It would, in my opinion, very drastic actions to prevent catastrophic accidents. However, I repudiate the act of delivering a driving license to those who did not support the necessary examinations. When this happens, it is a real shame!

Italy is also like Greece. It sure is a shame when someone pays to get the license. Cars and motorcycles can kill and it is no joke. Plus, they don't understand road behaviour.

There is a lot of drivers in the US and there are a lot of good and bad drives for sure here. We are all taught the same thing when learning how to drive. I don't think the more money you have the worst the driving gets. I think it has to do more with there are some people that feel that they are better then other people or that they are invisible since they can do many things behind the wheel. People tend to get comfortable with the things we do so we feel that nothing can happen.

Here in the USA, its really not that easy to get a drivers license..You first have to take a 3 hour class for safety road rules, then you have to pass and written and then pass a drivers test before getting a license.. At 16 yu can get a learners permit but an adult with a drivers license had to be in a car when you are operating a vehicle and you are not allowed to drive after 9:00 pm with a learners permit..

I agree with the fact that safety should come first, because when greeks drive, they think that they own all the road! They do many mistakes and they don't pay much attention to pedestrians and motorcycles. However, there are countries where I think it's even more easy to get a licence! My flatmate in uk was from India and she told me that they gave her a driving licence without going to a driving test! I am sure that other members from india can also share their experiences.

hi, yes people get license by bribing, in our country too, we have to give a written test and a driving test to get the license, but due to the bribing , everything is spoiled, and the result , many accidents , innocent people are loosing their lives every day, this should be controlled, and they should make some strict rules and give some proper training ,

I think before a person can have a driver's license he/she must pass various examinations to be sure that a person is really capable of driving. Not only physically but mentally as well. Driving is a very serious thing that is also risky if a person has unstable mind.

I am from India. So far as I know the state does not provide training for driving here.People who want to learn driving get themselves enrolled with private institutions known as 'driving schools'.When they finish their training, the institution takes the responsibility of getting their driving license issued by concerned government officials.I have seen heavy vehicles being driven by untrained drivers who manage to get licenses issued by government officials by bribing them.Consequently incidents of accidents are rampant.I also know drivers who have become efficient drivers after being trained by any good and experienced drivers.Such people either run their own taxis or become drivers of government buses. In brief, here is a kind of anarchy in issuing driving licenses.
