Would you put your dog down if he is ill?

My 15 year old Belgian Shepherd, Tupac is not eating and seems to be on his last legs. He still barks, he still struggles to get up, but he is depressed and the other dog Achilles, the huge Boerbul, a South African breed, seems to be pining. I know Tupac is not going to improve. He gets the best nutritious food, walks with Achilles with my son, but his spirit is gone.
Is it bad or wrong to put down a dog in this condition? Could you do it? Tupac has been such a good dog. Let me know if you would do something different.

To stop an animal from suffering, I would have it put to sleep.I know that it is not a easy thing to do to an animal and I know some days your dog may look better than others, but if a vet tells you that there is nothing that they can do for the way your dog is feeling, or if it gets worse it need to be put to sleep, then you must be kind and let the dog be put to sleep.

I would feel worse if I made him suffer. I know it's a hard decision, but if his quality of life isn't what it should be because of his ailments, I would do it. He can't tell you how he feels. And you, as his owner, know him better than anyone would ever know him. What does his vet say?

I don't think so. Because you shouldn't lose hope. Miracles can happen anytime. :)

This would depend on the nature of the illness and the prognosis of improvement.
If the animal is suffering and is unlikely to resume a level of health permitting an enjoyable life, then it would be the only reasonable action to take. I understand how difficult it is to make such a decision because a dog is not just a possession that can be replaced. Nevertheless, extending the misery without any realistic hope for the future is certainly not doing your pet any favours.

If your dog's terminally ill, I think the best thing to do is to give it a peaceful and painless way out. It's better than prolonging your dog's agony. I had been in a similar situation, and we decided to put our dog down. But none of us could do it, or even see someone doing it, however painless the procedure is. We let our vet took care of it.

I would, and I have...twice. Freddie couldn't eat, could barely move, so we put him down to end his suffering. Sparkie went blind and had renal failure, so we puthim down, too. I don't have dogs anymore. They were part of my family, and I just can't do that again.

I have had one dog that we have put down but really there is no choice with her because she was dieing and my parents felt it was best to end her suffering because she was in pain. My dog had cancer and it was slowly killing her and she was never happy. She didn't want to go and fought till the ever last day. I could be there when she was put down but the doctor made her very comfortable and both of my parents sat with her as they gave her the stuff to put her to sleep. She never felt a thing at all.
I see it as if the animal is in pain, and they are just not happy and you can make them happy then why keep them a live and make them suffer because you can let go or your not ready to. Some times it's just better to put them to sleep and be there for them then to keep them alive. We have to judge that as best as we can for our pets since they are not human they can't tell what they want.

I would say that if Tupac is in pain then it's time. I have been there many times and it was the hardest thing I ever had to do in my whole life. His spirit, though is different than physical pain. How can one tell how much emotional pain is present if you have no spirit left? This only you can answer. I could not put down an animal unless it became painful, physically, for it to live. It is the best, last thing you will ever do for him. That's all I can say. In the end it's the caretaker who has to look at all the advice and make the decision. All pet owners face this some day. I wish I could say more. Maybe others here will have better advice.
For Achilles, and I know you didn't ask, I have some sites that may give you some help in dealing with his grief when the time comes. I don't know if you need this or not but I thought I would include it, just in case. www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?A=1400 and this site has natural remedies for a grieving dog www.thenaturalpetpantry.co.uk/bach-flower-remedies-for-dogs I'm sorry I can't help you more. Please come back and let us know how things are.

It is sad to be in this position with a beloved pet. I would not trust myself to make this decision, I would ask a vet. They are not in a hurry to put dogs to sleep, and would only advise this if the animal was suffering.
If he is enjoying his food and going for walks perhaps it is not time yet. Someone told me that in a way her dog conveyed to her that he was ready to die. I have never experienced this but I imagine that if an animal and a human are really close this may be able to pass between them. After that experience she was able to part with her dog. My dog had a stroke when she was old and the vet told me that she would not recover, she would be blind. So the decision was made for me. I mourned her for 4 months and ten years later I still think of her.

Hello riempie9,
I understand that it's really hard decision which you will have to make yourself, but if your dog feels pain all the time and feels unhappy, then why not ending his agony by putting him down without any pain? I understand how much memories he did bring, but try to look at the dog's point of view, he is in pain and not happy, i don't really think you want to see your dog ends his days in pain.
Be sure your decision is right.

I think that sometimes you have to think about the bigger picture when it comes to making the decision of whether to end the life of an animal or not. If this is something that a vet has suggested to you, then you must understand that they must have had a very good reason for doing so. If your animal is in a lot of pain and has been for some time then you should know that it would be kinder to allow them to be put down rather than to refuse and then have them living in agony when there is no real need for them to do so.
