hiccups is the result of irritable diaphragm. LOL (diaphram having tantrums, that's cute) Anyway, what I do is to hold my breath for a while. It seems effective.
Furthermore, http://www.ehow.com/how_116950_stop-hiccups.html suggests the following: 1. hold your breath for 30 seconds and the release it. 2. breathe into a paper bag five times is a row. 3. sip 10 consecutive gulps slowly from a glass of water without breath. 4. immerse your face in ice-cold water for 30 seconds. 5. swallow a teaspoon of dry white granulated sugar.
If symptoms persists go to doctor or call 911. LOL
Good luck and stop your hiccups.

I usually have to hold my breath until I am uncomfortable to get rid of them. My husband eats a spoonful of peanut butter to get rid of his, and I have heard that eating dry toast also works for some people. The internet is full of advice on getting rid of hiccups. If MyLot doesn't do the trick, try googling it.

I have has success rubbing the tip of my tongue with lemon or sugar-- and another thing that works is:
put your hands on the top of your tummy, under your ribs. As you bend over, push in while you blow out through your mouth. While you're all the way bent over, don't breathe for 15-20 seconds, then breathe in as you straighten up. Those are the only things I have found that work.
My other half chews up and swallows ice, and that works for him.

Another person I know rubs jalapeno pepper juice on her tongue, but I am allergic, so I won't do that. But I have found the breathing trick and the lemon juice work pretty well.

I think hiccups is caused by air in your stomach!so the best thing to do is just try to get that air out.

The wellknown ways to remove hiccups is drink water, be scared or hold your breath. I haven't had hiccups in years, however I recall that holding my breath always worked in my occasion. It's kinda weird though, because if hicups happen due to the lack of oxygen in the brain, how is it that holding your breath provides your brains with oxygen?:P

I suffer a lot with hiccups, so I too will be interested in reading the replies to this common ailment. I drink too much pepsi and that is what mostly causes hiccupping for me. Some people say holding your breath for a minute, or being given a fright, and drinking water, I've tried all of these ways but none have been successful.

Well, last year when my husband was going through chemotherapy, they actually had to give him a prescription for an anti-seizure medication to help him to deal with the terrible hiccups that he would deal with on the day after he had a treatment. However, I don't think that this is something that is an option for most people.
So, for me, most of the time when I have a case of the hiccups, I have to admit that I will just try to wait them out, they don't tend to last for a very extended period of time.

The best remedy that works for us is to put 1/4 of a teaspoon of sugar on your tongue and let it slowly melt in your mouth. It seems to help and make the hiccups disappear.

As someone has mentioned before, sip on some water, drink slowly, take a deep breath, sip some more. Think of something else, have another sip. Don't give it much thought. Just be calm and take some deep breaths.

so how can you cure a hiccup? while a doctor might claim that all hiccup "cures" are really just old wives tales that have zero effect, other people claim that their favorite pet cure works evertime. this is most likely due to a placebo effect and resignation to the universal yet underrated condition problem of hiccups (signultus). interestingly, some of these folk remedies are no the correct path by having at least some basis in the science of the hiccup and singultus. with home remedies, the methods that attempt to relax or stimulate the diaphragm tend to be the most effective. whether the chosen "remedy" is a miracle cure or placebo effect is for you to decide. here are some proposed methods that some people believe work. your results may vary http://www.wikihow.com/Cure-Hiccups

hiccups can be stopped in many ways.......if the person listens any sudden news and if he gets tension then they will not come because an impulse will pass to the brain that stops the hiccups

Breathing in a paper bag stops them cold; so raising your CO2 level will get rid of them. Works for me every time.

My boyfriend had hiccups when he was at the pub one day and a friend of his, with great confidence, suggested a teaspoon of sugar. The barmaid supplied him with said sugar and he swallowed it down. The hiccups vanished! :D So I would try this but brush your teeth after. ;)
