Its been a question which pesters me how many languages a human being can learn. India is a country which is flooded with so many languages. That's one more reason for our problems and also why we are good at English. This is my experience. I have stayed with 10 different roommates and all speak different languages. What kept us together is our patriotism and love to spend time together. My girlfriend speak a different language but she says she wants to learn mine as she has to move freely with my family. When i see my folks speaking my native language, i feel very comfortable and move with them easily. I have love to speak some language and learn them too. But it is really tough. Share your thoughts on same.

Here in the Philippines there are a lot of dialects also. When I was in college I studied in our neighbor town and they have their own dialect. At first, It was very hard to communicate with those who live there but later on I learned their dialects already. Quite difficult to understand but tolerable. I want to learn so many languages so that when I go to any place I will feel I belong with them and I will not feel awkward to communicate with those people with different languages as mine.

Hi xorticanz
One should speak in a language he is comfortable with. Knowing your mother tongue is of course important. But as we stay in India, talking in Hindi with everybody is mostly prefered. I've heard, people from the south dont speak Hindi! They strictly speak their own regional language..
And Afterall, Language is just a mode of communication.

One should speak in a language he is comfortable with, i agree with your point so not a big deal if south Indians don't speak hindi ,its their interest if they want want they will. Nobody should say that they should learn /speak hindi.

I worked as a children's nanny in Finland when I was eighteen years old. Many other young people did some work in Finland as part of a European young person event. I was invited to a day out with all the foreign workers. They came from all around Europe and English my mother tongue language was the common language. It is lovely your girlfriend is trying to learn your language. It is tough to speak one, two or three foreign languages. I admire the Dutch because they are masters of foreign languages. I learned French at school and went to a Spanish evening class. I love traveling and foreign languages are useful overseas.

English is my first, and sadly to say, only language. Howver, if I had to learn a language today, it would NOT be English. English is so complicated. Our language is a mish-mash of many other languages. Because of this, our language doesn't follow rules. There are some spelling patterns (and therefore patterns in the way groups of letters sound), but it seems there are almost as many exceptions. For example, in the word "bead", we hear the middle two letters say the letter e. This is the pattern. When two vowels go together, the first says its name. But what about fierce and friend? The exceptions don't even have a rule. The "ie" sounds different in each word. We can't even agree on what's correct in different English speaking countries! Britain says the abbreviation for mathematics is maths and America and other countries in North America say the abbreviation is math. Why is English the universal language???? Couldn't we have chosen something a little easier, that makes a little more sense????

Hi,
wow i agree you are right. once one of our teacher asked us to speak a few words about English. yes many felt the same as you mentioned.
I think it is called as universal language because it is a mish-mash of everything that's why (lol)

I know there are many languages in India. Sometimes when I watch the Indian movies, I feel very confused because sometimes they speak in English, and sometimes they speak in a kind of Indian dialect. Here we also have many dialects, but Mandarin is our official language. But in my city the main language is Cantonese. Of course I prefer to speak in Cantonese much more because it is my mother language. I can also speak in Mandarin, but sometimes it will not be as fluid as Cantonese, especially in the discussions

Hiya,
Yes, I actually like to speak in my native language. Through the times I have learned other languages like English and a few conversational knowledge in other languages. However, when I need to speak from the deepest part of my heart, I find that my native language lets me naturally show my emotions. There would be a perfect word for what I was feeling and there would be perfect descriptions to what I was thinking and feeling.
I do wish to learn other languages because I find it fascinating how other people get to communicate and I would love to be able to communicate with them in the same way.^_^

yes we all feel very much comfortable with our mother language but as a citizen of a country like ours those who like to travel places will like to learn many languages at the same time with due respect to our own one.I personally can speak four languages and also a little about one or two more and recommend learning of many languages of this land so it is easy to know many people of your country and their life and traditions and little known facts of life.good luck.

We do have a lot of dialects in our country, it's different in every region and we are also scattered on the different region in our country. If I were to have a roommate with a different language or dialect, I too will learn their dialect/language so we could have a good flow of communication. It goes as well if I were to stay in another country with a different language. Even if we do have our own national dialect, it's also a good thing to learn other dialects or other languages. I have a Romanian colleague before but we never understand each other if we don't speak English. what we did is we ask him to teach us some of his language and we teach him some of ours as well.

yes of course i love to speak in my native language , and that's more comfortable. Yes India is a country where we speak many languages . That's also a plus for us. As like any other Indian can speak and write 3 languages. But speaking in my language is more comfortable always.

I speak three different languages and I feel pretty comfortable in all of them but when I have something that I want to express clearly I use english just because my brain thinks in english. When I have to speak in a different language it does take me a while to get comfortable think that way but then things are ok. I think if you speak multiple languages you just have to be able to adapt.

Actually when I with my family I always speak my local language, but if I need to communicate with others then I will choose mandarin because most of them can not understand my local language.Of course if I meet foreigner I will choose English,English is such a good language when we can use it we can communicate with the people from all over the world, then I find out that most European can speak English and it takes up a large proportion.

To be honest I do not care. I think the dutch people are so used through the ages to foreigners, they travel a lot that no matter where they go most of them always will try to speak some words. It's normal to have a travel guide with words/sentences with them. We hear English whole day on (radio, tv, etc) but I can't say many children nowadays do speak good English. Years ago it was way better. What is kind of strange.
I do speak some foreign languages, did even learn more but if you are not able to use it, it won't improve. By now I am not that interested anymore to learn to speak the language of my husband since he is speaking English as well. I do learn the language of the country I stay more frequently since I think it's not good to depend on some people (never know how long they are able to help you out, one should be able to handle things him/herself plus you never know if you can trust people plus if you stay somewhere else more frequently you should try to integrate and not stay on your own island).

Chinese in my mother togue. but there are so many dialect In China. Putonghua maybe the most popular one and everyone can understand. When I go to college, we speak different language because we come from different places. How I wish I could speak my dialect with my roommate. But they just cannot understand. English is my second language. I have to memorize many first words first then I can communicate with someone In English fluently. I do hope to learn French. Is there anyone who can teach me French.
