in the u.s.a we hold the mentally ill responsible legally and criminally. of course, i would never criticize the u.s. for it's ever so beautiful and fair laws. i just wonder why this is so. how does your country treat the mentally ill when they commit a crime?

hi there, im raj and im from india, Well my dad is a cop and at times he shares some instances which he feels to be shared and i've heard about such cases where people commit crimes when they are not mentally stable..but in our country the laws are some what different..if someone commits such crime..they would be sending him to the hospital for the treatment to check wheather he is really sick, if yes then he has to go under treatment and then he would be charged on the seriousness of the crime, well it depends upon country to country.. There are some cases where criminal pretend they are sick and they are not..so cops in our country take proper care of them..

that sounds more humane. at least their mental illness gets a chance to be looked at before they are just thrown in jail and not taken care of.

In Denmark we have a special psychiatric ward for climinals who are mentally ill. They get treatment there, but in other ways it is similar to a prison because they can't leave the psychiatric ward when they want. Some criminals are in "forvaring" which means that they don't know how long they have to receive treatment, it could be a few years and it could be several years. It depends on the doctors' evaluation and whether the doctors think that they are likely to commit new crimes in the future. Mentally ill criminals get treatment instead of a prison sentence, that is the goal, but some of the them have to spend some time in prison first, because there are too many mentally ill criminals and not enough psychiatric wards for criminals.

In the Philippines, when a mentally ill person commits a crime, he will be sent to a psychiatrist for diagnose as to his mental condition whether he can bear the rigors of court hearing. Then when he is already cured of his mental illness he will face the charge against him. If ever, it will be proven that he is mentally ill during the commission of the crime, he will be cleared of the crime however, he shall pay the damages he has done.

It is not always happen in my country. If the person is mentally ill, they are brought to a certain mental asylum. I had seen one facility, they were in the jail-type room.

Yes, in my country they do imprison those who mentally ill and committed crime, intended or unintended crimes. Normally they will sent to the special rehabilitation center, and later on proceed to the proper imprisonment but isolated. Anyway I'm from Indonesia. Cheers.
