I have had a keen interest in writing since I was a child. I wrote stories and essays for English class with pleasure. I was eager to embrace every writing assignment that came my way that required my imagination.
Is this passion enough to parlay into at least a part time career? Id love to go full steam ahead, but I am unsure how to start. I thought I work work on here and maybe hubpages for a little while and see what I can manage to produce.
Ive been kicking around the idea of writing a short story ebook to sort of test the waters. How did you get started?

What kind of career do you mean?
If you're talking about being an author of fiction, there is no pre-requisite at all. You simply write. That said, the act of getting published is more complicated... or of being seen if you're self-publishing. If that's the direction you're interested in then you'll need to have some idea of the publishing process (easy enough), marketing your own work (complicated, of course) and getting critiques (there are online communities that do this).
If you're talking about being a content creator - in other words a freelance writer who produces content on demand for money - then yes, as long as you can put words into sensible phrases, you're fine. Finding work is less easy, of course, especially at the beginning.
There are a LOT of avenues you can explore with freelance writing: in my experience (which I wish I'd had when I started) you're really better off coming at it from the other side, as it were. Figure out what you'd like to do then find someone willing to pay for it rather than looking to see what people will pay for and trying to squeeze yourself into that mold!
Personally, I started with rev share because it's the easiest to get into. It's the worst pay in the short term, though. There's always a trade-off!
Off-hand, the short story ebook is a fine idea but do not - absolutely do not - believe that any results you get are normal. Given how easy it is to self-pub these days, you'll either get no sales and no feedback or be one of the very, very few who get lucky without doing piles of marketing. Most authors sell a dozen copies of their ebook, which is why most of the major self-pub sites work around that model - lots of authors, few sales each rather than few authors, lots of sales each.
Hope that helps... I'm probably rambling a bit because this is such a HUGE subject.

Right now I am not looking at the long term implications. I just would like to start and see what happens. I figure that as my experience grows and I get better then I am more likely to make more money at that point. I work at a decent paying job so its not like writing is my go to income just yet. Maybe one day....

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Well that is absolutely great to hear that u have a passion for writing and i think u should continue doing the same and i believe that one day u will have a good name in the field of writing.
What i feel is that u should start writing blogs and try to publicize it as much as possible. The more traffic it gets the more beneficial u will be at. Besides u can start writing books for children and i m sure your hard work will never go wasted.
What say?

I love blogging but I am never sure about how to go about it. Some people find a niche and can write ALL about one subject. I tend to be all over the place. Maybe with some practice I can mainstream that.
One of my biggest obstacles is that I am my own worst critic. I edit and edit and proofread until I want to go mad or get frustrated with myself. I need to learn to just let the words flow and maybe let someone else fix it.

I do not think I could write as anyone else anyways. I have my own personality and style so it wouldnt work for me to try to write like anyone else.

I have done a bunch of writing. I did do articles once and made a little bit of money. It was a valuable experience. I know I can write and write well. I just need to find my niche.

This is my thought process about it too. I may not make much or even anything in the beginning. Im just looking for a few good places to get my work out there and maybe make a bit of a name for myself first.

I take my hat off on you tanniebabe! great that you have that kind of passion. Great in the sense that it's not only a talent but a passion. I think you're already starting to share and earn about your talent by doing mylot. If you wanted more, you can blog your articles,or go to the sites that pays high for the articles that you're going to submit. I'm not quite sure but I've heard from my friend about site that paid high payments for submitting articles. Unfortunately I forgot the site. You may search it on the net or ask your friends perhaps they know.

Well thank you. I have always wanted to write. I have been an avid reader my whole life and I know I could write outstanding novels. I've even been accepted to a prestigious college for my writing when I was 14. I know I have talent and drive. I am now looking for the outlet for that very thing. If I had been able to afford that college I would have gone.

I really have passion in writing. I started my writing online at writing.com. That is a good writing website wherein one can learn many things from other writers. I'm into creative writing there and I even won first prize in poem contest. You should try. From there I write articles now in one good writing site.
Happy writing!

If you have the urge don't wait. Let your writing be seen. In return, you will make some money. I started out with Ehow. I like the idea of helping people. So I used to write about unique tips. But then I went to Bukisa, Yahoo Contributor and many more to write detailed articles on various things.

That sounds great! I am trying to figure out what Ive learned that might be interesting and maybe even helpful to other people. That combined with not much time and I struggle a bit. I need to make the time though because this is important to me.

Hi friend, good to hear about this, as you mentioned you are interested in writing from your childhood, so there is nothing wrong in writing an ebook. Lot of sites like smash words, lulu allows you to publish your ebook for free and you can make money from your ebook sales. Keep giving your good writing and make money with it

This is actually a great idea! For now I think it would be best to offer some free content if I should decide to go with an ebook at any time to get my writing style out there and see if it will work within any type of demographic. At that point I would feel more comfortable with charging.

Writing I feel should never be done with a preoccupied mind for earning money. I am just having this view because we then loose that charm and pleasure in writing we would have had otherwise. I write to pour out my feelings to speak up my mind. I find this site as a good promotion for people like me who are fond of writing. This site silently pays you for that without letting your interest divert away into earning.

Right now its not even about money. Although I wont lie that would be nice. I would like to just get my feet wet and see if I can make some money. I do love to create and weave an intense story that you can't put down and that runs through all the human emotions so that its as if you live it as you read it. That's my goal and the kind of author I would like to be.

I found confidence to write publicly by attending evening classes for would be writers. I had never read anything aloud that I had written, or given anything to anyone else to read either. So I was rather apprehensive until I heard other people reading their stuff and it was enlightening in many ways. Some was so good I wondered why they were at a class at all and some was so bad I wondered why they bothered. But as the term progressed we all got much better at writing, we had an excellent teacher so we learned a great deal from her and also from one another.
We were able to share our ideas, our successes and our failures, it made such a difference to writing which is usually a solitary hobby. Testing the waters with an ebook is not a good idea initially because if it isn't a very good book and you are named as the author then the sale of future better books might be badly affected.

I am writing out of passion. Frankly speaking, I don't like doing some write up even in high school days. But I got interested to it, when I taught English language to some Asian students. Now, I am just writing to some article sites.

This is why I am trying to decide what is the best course. I dont really have the spare time right now to write a bit long novel. I could probably find time to write short stories here and there or articles though....

Getting into career is a very critical decision to make. More or less, you have to get it the right time though making a mistake isn't completely bad itself. I suggest you read about writers, read their advice and just explore the world of writing- fiction and non-fiction- through reading and trying to make some personal pieces yourself. Being a writer, for me isn't just getting the enthusiasm to get the writing job done. For me a writer, part-time or not, has to have passion and integrity in whatever piece he/she is on or else it's all just words without body. In other words you have to have passion about what you want to write as a writer, what message do you want to perceive even by just an inkling.
Explore the field more but what's most important that you explore your inner self more. Reflect, meditate, and always pray. Part-time or not, whatever career we choose will undoubtedly play a huge part in shaping the kind of person we become.
