The beggars are commonly seen near the exit of the metro or on the crowded street.Especially in the winter,I always feel sympathy for them.Every morning when I go out of the metro station,I can see a poor old man,who squatts on the roadside and keeps his head down.He is about sixty something. His face is full of wrinkles, which seems remind people the hardships he experienced.
Each day thousands of people pass in front of him hurriedly, some spares the coins, but most just give him a quick look and then leave. On one morning,I gave him 2 RMB and the next day I summoned up my courage to give him some bread, though it is little,it is the only thing I can do for him.I don't have too much money and the ability to do the big favor to him.
But I won't give the money to the beggars with young face and healthy body,I should say they just want to make the easy money.Giving them the money just encourges them to be lazier. What is your point on it?Thank you in advance.

The government always reminded us that giving money to the beggar is not a good option or not helpful for them to get away from that kind of life they have.
For me I give money depending on what kind of beggar that ask something to me. I always refuse when someone ride in a jeep and ask for money. Because I don't know if those money really go to their pocket and buy some food? They are merely used by some bad people to make money...

No, friend. Not just a man but many kids ride on the jeepney and ask for money. They gives passenger envelop as their alibi with the purpose of asking gift because this month is a Christmas time.
Even those preacher ride on the bus and used the words of God, to ask for money. All those actions are prohibited by law.

Yes I give money to the beggars on the street, those poor old people, some who can't see or who can't walk. Some says that there are people who leads them to beg for alms but i don't care as long as I helped even a little of what I have. I am just disgusted when i have given some food to a kid when he asked for money, he didn't accept the food! My god what kind of a beggar is that? he was so choosy and I was humiliated because i really bought the food for him. I don't understand why some of the beggars really wants money instead of food which can aid their hunger.

I guess the kid who begs money rather than food is trained by some type of criminal organizations. If they can not fulfill the task, they would punished.

From reading this.. I think everyone is "on to" these "beggers". Not that we are heartless or anything, but we just can't be sure! Just cause they LOOK like they are poor or need help etc, doesn't mean they do! Many make themselves look that way to get the money so they don't have to go to work...quick easy money! That was a HUGE issue out here in California few years back...beggers on the streets and on the off ramps of the freeways. They'd stand there with their signs, saying "will work for food". You know no one is going to say "hop in the car and I'll take you home to work" or anything like that, so they just give them a buck or two. End of the day, that person has couple hundred bucks in his pocket!
But I dont' give to anyone anymore unless it is obvious they are needy. There is this one guy that I see sometimes at the grocery.. in a wheelchair with no legs. I will give to him, but the young guy sitting there with a cigerette in his hand asking for some change...sorry.. if you have enough for those cigs...you aren't to hungry! So it just depends. I know this stuff has really effected the help the needy used to depend on...Salvation ARmy and their buckets and all...But you dont' even know for sure if those with the buckets and bells are really working for the SA or any other organization. They could just be taking it home!
I also don't donate to anything with a person sitting in a chair with a tv tray in front and a sign saying to donate to this or that cause. Again, I have no idea that the money is for that cause or just going home with that person.

Thank you for your wonderful words,we do need the ability to distinguish which one is really needed of help and which one just does it as job, they even mind when you give them food only. Those people are not worth being felt pitied.

Before I responded to your discussion, I visited your profile to find out the place you were.
At my place, Malaysia, the government does not allow to have beggars around our place because there is a charity department to provide shelters and to take care of them.
Recently, there were so many beggars believing from China.
They were arrested and sent back to their origin because of abusing their visa.
Within a day, a single beggar from them could earn around $500.00 USD or more.
This was the reason, they frequently came our place to beg around.
Besides, there were organizations which delivered those handicapped people or children to beg too.
For me, I shall not give any money to any of the beggars to prolong such bad culture in this society.
I do hope everyone here can do the same as me too.

Hi Aeiou,I do hope our government can take the effective actions like yours, which would not only prevent from the vicious cycle of this phenomenon, but can help the poor settle down and be wandering everywhere. They tried, but I think they still need to perfect the relevant regulations.
Thank you for your share.I learnt a lot.

I have never given a "beggar" money. I have given them food. I have given them what I could spare if I have had extra food with me while I am out and about. I will not give them money. I would rather give a homeless person money than to give a beggar money. I recently read the difference between a beggar and a homeless person. A homeless person will usually not even ask for money. They may even have a job, keep clean and do what they can to keep their family safe. Beggars on the other hand don't have jobs, but have a place to stay and are dirty and beg for what they get. Sometimes it is hard for people to get jobs, because they have no address to fill out on their application. Society is one big mixed up mess. I agree with you though, encouraging begging is not cool. I like to help these people, give them a warm bed to sleep for the night, a full stomach and a clean shower.

What part of the world are you from? I live in the states and I typically don't give money to those in the streets. I would feel better about my self if I donated money to some type of organization or worked to give out food for the homeless. I am one who likes to see my money turn into value. And I think that by giving money directly to the homeless I will not see the value but only feel good about myself.

Hi,isha,I come from China.I should admit in my country, the welfare institution and other similar types of organization are derelict of their duties,so after we donate some money to them, actually it would be difficult for them to put it into effect. That is why I gave some money or food directly to the poor beggars.

I am more apt to give money to someone that is disabled. I have a son that is and know their struggles day to day. I also give help to families that are struggling because of something that has had something happen to put them in a bind.

I will not give beggers money. Most of them will turn around and use it to buy cigerettes or booze! Instead of food which they really need! It is better to buy them a hamburger or something like that if you want to help them out. Even a cup of coffee is better then giving them money!
A few weeks ago a so called homelss man who has mental problems was walking around New York city,in the cold, without anything on his feet. A cop saw it and bought him a pair of boots to wear. A few days later the guy was barefoot again! He said he hid the boots because he felt someone would kill him for them! Then it comes out the guy,who has mental illness, has an apartment! Social security and his military benefits pay for it! At first he said he didn't use it! A few days later he said he sleeps there! This guy is not homeless and doesn't deserve handouts! He is taking advantage of others and he should be ashamed for this!

Giving foods for the elderly is much better than giving money.
The other day a young boy approached me and my son soon as we came out from a fast food.
My son asks me for a loose change and I said, "give the boy a food" , so my son took a hamburger and a cup of soda and handed it to the boy.
I also do not give anything to those beggars who looks healthier than I do.

I feel sad seeing people in the streets, most especially those kids asking for alms. I am sometimes torn between giving them money or not coz I know that there are some people who belong to a syndicate that looks after these beggars and they take the money away from the beggars. What I would commonly do is give them food instead. Atleast I know that it is them that will eat the food that I gave them.

Yeap, you are right. It cannot deny that they were controlled by some type of criminal organizations, and all their earnings they begged actually would be taken by the organizations.

Having beggars on the streets is a problem that the authorities should deal with and should not let it be. The welfare department should look into those beggars to find out what their plights are. For those people that is unable to work, some sort of assistance should be accorded to help them so that they would be looked after. Child beggars must be investigated if they are controlled by criminals. They must be rescued and sent back to their family to have their life back on tract, or to an establishment that could let them be taught a skill so that the children can earn a living when they are old enough.
I won't give beggars money. I feel that to give them money will just encourage them to take begging as a career. I would rather help the unfortunates thru the proper channels.

It depends. For me, I can tell (though I'm not always right) whether the beggar is really in need or just a member of a syndicate, or just a product of laziness. We are actually discouraged to give anything to beggars but some people just can't afford to just tolerate them.
I wanna share this quote, 'It's not your fault when you were born poor, but when you die poor then it's your fault'.

Hello my friend. I understand how you feel and I had a similar experience in Shanghai, when I was there. I was going into a park and there was an old man sitting there begging. He looked very sad. As I approached, he looked up at me and I gave him all the change I had. It was the same when I was in Vietnam too. I saw so many people there begging and it's very sad to see people with no arms or legs. I wonder how they manage to survive each day.
My friends there always told me, never to give them any money but when their backs were turned away, I always did give them some..haha
Maybe I am too soft and easy sometimes but I do care about people and I realise that I have a comfortable life, where so many do not.
I can see that you too are a caring person and I find that nice. I agree that you should not give money to young looking people though. In my city London, there are so many sitting on the streets begging for money but I know that many of them collect a lot of money each day and then go home!
You keep up the good work and it's nice you care. :-)

It is so nice to get your reply,Robin. From your words,I should say we are birds of feather, lol.I am easily touched by this poor scene and melted by their sufferings. But because I was cheated by some of them before,I realize we do need to have the ability to tell which one is in need of help, and which one is just for sake of money.Obviously now some one treats it as a job, that is ridiculos, but I think no matter what we do or offer,we have a nice heart, even sometimes we were tricked by them,it is their fault, not ours. Our starting point is not wrong.
Have a nice day.Merry xmas.

I personally give money to begers and when I pass by the people who are not that fortunate or rich as I am, the simple reason being it makes me feel more fortunate, it makes me feel humble and moreover I do not loose anything by giving them few coins in my pocket.

No I never give a single penny to any beggar ever.If you are giving them money you are simply making them lazy and promoting them to stay out of work to earn money.
Now it is most common problem every where. We should never show sympathy to them.Sometimes you may see some people who are really poor and handicap and need help from us should be helped. In India you will find beggars almost every where starting from temples to railway station and sometimes inside the train. Many of them really are not poor and look healthy but not not willing to work hard and earn money.
