Our whole house is sick! Everyone of us has the worst head cold ever and two of the kids have ear infections now. We have been using herbal remedies through out all this and though the cold isn't as bad as it could be despite my need for drama above it has been very draining. We have tried to stay away from chemical Thought I would share and see if there are any other home cures I might be missing!

Increase the vitamin C and D while sick. Put Vicks VapoRub on bottom of feet and put on white socks at night to eliminate coughs. Everyone wash hands often. And use hand sanitizer if unable to get to faucet and soap. Cover mouth while coughing and sneezing. Isolate, if possible, those that are the sickest. Stay in and do not go to places where people congregate in perfusion. This means staying home from work as well. Don't worry too much about eating but do keep fluid intake up. If plagued with vomiting and diarrhea, limit meals and drink Gatorade, small quantities at a time.

I have never heard of putting Vapor rub on your feet instead of your chest! Sorry it took so long to respond but sick was an understatement and I was hospitalized for over a week. Then I just rested.

Before you start with herbals: everybody will catch a cold sooner or later this is normal. I will advice you something very simple. All wear (woolen) hats. It keeps the head warm plus the ears. If necessary (and there is some draft in the house) wear it even in bed. You will see it will work plus if your head is warm the rest of your body will be also. Keep yourselfs warm (fleece blankest, hot water bags), drink a lot of hot tea, go to bed early and let your body do the work. There is no herb or med in this world that can prevent getting sick or will cure you at once. It's your body who had to do the job!

Well we already use the herbals and we don't usually get sick like this but this strand of cold going around is just wicked and taken down most of the town at this point. Sleep is all we did for three weeks.

Home cures I can't really think of. I mean I can think of natural remedies, but even if they are natural remedies like herbs you have to buy those in the store. Do you have a humidifier? That usually helps.

You might want to do antibiotic for those ear infections. They can damage your children's hearing. I know, I had adult onset ear infections and I think they damaged mine. Not to mention they hurt.

Rest and Relax. It's important to get lots of rest and to just relax. I always insist that my family eat lots of oranges and grapefruit when they have a cold. Lots of Vitamin C in the natural way. If one of my family has to take antibiotics, then I always make sure they take acidophilus capsules or eat yogurt with acidophilus as it restores the body back to health. http://www.wisegeek.org/what-is-acidophilus.htm 'Because antibiotics kill the so-called probiotics, such as acidophilus, as well as harmful bacteria, people who are undergoing treatment with antibiotics may find that they are more likely to develop yeast infections and similar problems. Experts often recommend that patients take supplements of acidophilus and eat foods rich in the bacteria after completing the treatment to help restore the body's natural balance. Acidophilus is touted for its many health benefits, some of which have been known about for thousands of years.'

Always wash your hands. Open the window or door every morning to enter the fresh air. Drink lots of water and eat fruits. Try to make chicken soup, chicken soup is best to fight colds and flu. And at bed time put some oil or any vapor rub to chest, back and sole. It is more relaxing when they sleeping.

Zinc... zinc somehow keeps viruses (viri?) from reproducing. I have some Zicam that I just sprayed on my new mouth ulcer, those are caused by viruses too.

My mother used to put alittle eucalyptus oil in water and boil it on the stove at night. The steam was very soothing to the head, chest, and throat. You could use it in a humitifier. And warm tea and honey is always soothing for children and adults alike. Chamomile is always a good one to help with sleep and relaxation. I would also suggest you all take some L-Lysine. It is one of the 2o some amino acids and strengthens the immune system. Adults would take 5 for a week and then one a day. Golden seal is a great antibiotic. You can get it in bulk and put in capsules yourself or buy the herb already in the capsule form. Drinking plenty of water also helps flush out toxins in the body and keeps you from getting dehydrated when sick. If there are body aches you can take warm bathes with Epson salt in it to soothe the pain.

Why don't you use some balm like, D'cold total, or vicks etc. It is effective if you apply it on your nose in the night before sleep. It is not costly at all. If you want some home remedy then try the garlic mixed with the sarso(mustard) oil, mix them together heat them a little and then apply the oil mix on your nose and your throat(externally) and massage it. It also give good results. That is all a little I know about. Always take the general precautions to take care of your body from the cold.

We have a petroleum allergy in the house. Only three of us can use Vicks or other balms based with it so usually I use a peppermint oil watered down with olive or mineral oil. I will have to look for that oil.
