Yesterday I started a post about fears and told about my fears for earthquakes and how it was tha my husband feared dogs. I then asked about the fears mylotters had. It was incredible the amount of ansers I got from people afraid of dogs. It seems that it was a much bigger percentage than any other fear. In the years I have been here, at mylot, I had never heard of anything about relations with dogs except for love. Are you aware that dogs are very much feared by many people? Share!

When I was a kid, I was terrified of dogs so much that I would climb trees and stuff when they were around. It was kinda funny because at the same time I liked dogs in theory at least because I had stuffed dog toy that I was pretending it was real. Then one day my parents bring home a little puppy because the owner said he'd drown her if nobody took her. At the first time I was really scared but every day we were getting closer. I remember I was really scared while playing with her but it was still fun and then I was really bored when she went to sleep. I would sit next to her waiting until she wakes up so we could play some more. After some time my fear of all dogs disappeared entirely. So I recommend every person that is afraid of dogs to get one.

That`s a nice way to overcome the fear of dogs, although it will not help everyone. In our case, we got a dog for our daughters and my husband was not afraid of Perla, but still he did not like to go through a place with a dog, even if there was a fence between the dog and him.

Not for me. Ever since never bite by a dog. Dog are aggressive if you are danger to them, just like snake. I feared with snake. It's like I am dying when I see snake even not dangerous

Where I live, we have the brown recluse spider. It lives in houses, even clean ones. Most of the houses, incliding mine, could arbour one or more of them.

I would be very afraid of snakes too, but we don`t have snakes where I live. I do fear a spider that we have in my country that has deadly poison.

when I got my first house, my friends at work, Frank, Noor and Jaye got me a kitten. Noor was deathly afraid of animals, dogs, cats, you name it. So as one of them drove, and another held the kitten, Noor was in the car shaking with fear.

Of couse I`m not afraid. But there are 2 cats in the neighborhood who are extremelly fond of using my grden as toilrttes, specially when I just placed seeds. I shoo them and they look back at me with disdain. Those are the times that I teach swear words to the d**ned cats. And I tell them all the bad things I`ll do to them

hi there marguicha. i'm posting at mylot so i always remind myself that strange is the new normal here. lol! anyway, i do think that dogs being one of the things people fear most is quite strange considering that dogs are considered man's best friend. i would understand if it is a wild dog or a stray dog even but an actual pet dog of a friend or family member seems out of place. that's just me though. anyway, people have different fears and different varying degrees of fears as well. goes to show that mylot is a diverse community and one thing might not exactly be the same for another. i wonder what percentage of mylot users are afraid of keyboards or typing words in a public forum? lol!!! cheers and happy mylotting!!!

yeah stray dogs can be a menace. stray dogs here in my neighborhood are reported and captured. sometimes, these stray dogs are just taht stray dogs and these are sent to animal shelters. other times though these dogs are owned by families and measures are done to return them to their owners.

In my neighborhood, usually a stray dog is a lost dog. They usually have collars and you can trace their ownwers. But in poor neighborhoods, she dogs (mylot did not let me use the right word) give birth to puppies beyond the posibility of anyone to take care of them.

THe thing is that there are many stray dogs, and maybe that is what people fear. I don`t fear a dog that barks behind a fence, but I am cautious of a stray dog that goes by. Fortunatly there aren`t many in my neighborhood.

Hiya margi, Two encounters with the owners of Dogs apart from the Doberman Dog. One was when I was walking down a Street minding my own business when a group of Children walking a Rottweiler on a long leash tried to block my way on the right hand side of the Street. I saw their intentions a mile off so when I walked straight through the middle of them with the Rottweiler in the middle because they deliberately blocked the pavement so that the only way you could go was through the middle of them. So through I went and the Rottweiler just looked at me and that was it. They looked astounded they said in Spanish "that foreign woman was not afraid" and I had to giggle to myself a bit. But what they were doing was very wrong exposing the Rottweiler to a very possible encounter where he might have gotten to bite someone and they were nasty little bullies they obviously thought I did not understand them. Another one was a couple man and woman sort of forty odd and with a pitbull think it was a Staffordshire but it was very nasty and fierce but it was because the owner would stand right where you could not go past otherwise I would have gone the other way and she would pull on the leash and frustrate the Dog and he would snap out at you. Really annoying was the Woman much more than the Dog although I was tempted to report her I thought better of it because of her political stance we lived in a complicated area. I managed to get around this silly woman and boyfriend who was more menacing than the dog looked like he could eat you alive if he could. After that she would watch to see who would come out of the Door and try it on someone else. Don´t you think they are amazing some People they put up with it doh still can´t believe it after all this time.xxx

I`d say that one of the differences between dogs and men are that dogs are nasty because they don`t know otherwise. People are nasty knowingly. Those children you talk about were not angelsand neither were the other people in your stories.

Hiya margi, That is very true they really do not know malice like we do and there is plenty of malice going around even we only want to see the good things in others. I was concerned about the Dog itself and that if it did get to bite me the Dog would have been put down its a Law here most Dogs get put down if they bite. As for the children they might have looked like little Angels but they are not using the poor old dog to satisfy their whims of trying to bother and bully other people is not my idea of fun. It seems like they only did it for fun of course. As for the grown ups those two need a lesson teaching to them each one as some time or another somebody will do the same back to them and I am pretty sure that they will not like that at all. They are just people with a bit of malice or a lot I really could not care less about them either. Second time around that I walked down that Street they were there again with the dog and the same trick but this time they did not even bother with me so I guess they are not so bad after all but dogs like Rottweilers get a really bad reputation just for being one. xxx

Here they too put down a dog that bites if it is a stray dog. As for a dog that kills, it is put down no matter who is the owner. We have to keep a paper of our dog`s vaccination and if our dog bites (even if it is a scratch) and we don`t have the paper, we are heavily fined. Those bullies should be taught a lesson tough. I always say that most of the people everywhere are nice. But it is those mean people that sometimes give a place a bad name.

Yes some people are very afraid of dog. I am not afraid of dogs, just some of the meaner breeds because they were bred to protect, and cause harm if need be. Sometimes those dogs lose it and attack those that would not cause harm.

I have heard that although some breeds are meaner, as you say, it is more the way you teach them that make them do what they do. It`s like the way police dogs act. Probably it is the same breed they have for blind people (intelligent dogs) but trained differently.

Yes training is very key in how a pet should react to people. Our Princess may get up in the window and bark at someone but she does not jump on anyone, which is a Godsend because she would knock you over with her size.

Animals are like people in that they sense and smell fear. For some people it is something that happened when they were younger that causes that fear and the cause might even have been something said by a parent or older person, i.e. don;t touch that dog or he wil bite you or something similar. Or perhaps evebeing bitted by a dog is enough to cause fear. I am not afraid of dogs, cats or any domestic pets or even most farm animals but snakes are another thing altogether. I have a good friend who is afraid of dogs but keeps snakes. Admittedly they are enclosed in big pens/cupboards with glass on 3 sides but they are still snakes to me! However I will admit to being afraid of heights .... feet planted firmly on terra firma if where I am most comfortable.

When I was a little girl my mom told me that my dad was bitten by a dog. From that on I hated dogs and I assumed Every dog would bite me . The only reason I am not that leery today is because I have seen dog shows on t.v. I got to see dogs while not being in their presence. Now I don't walk in the other direction when a dog walks by.

I am a pet owner and animal lover but I am also very cautious when around animals that are not used to me. Dogs especially. I have had a couple of near misses with some very big aggressive dogs and I am afraid too. I am super uncomfortable around big dogs that I don't know.

Yes, especially thieves. Thieves are afraid of dogs and so if you have dogs at home, you can be sure thieves will have second thoughts about robbing your house. I know of many people who re really afraid of dogs. I am also, if it's not my dog, but not much. If they don't look wild or the type that will bite me, I'm okay with them.

Here you can find tons of stray dogs on streets, very few persons keep dogs as pet; after the breeding season we also see so many puppy here and there; these dogs will bark at you and if you run out of fear, they run behind you. If you are on a bike they chase you.. Due to all these people are afraid. My sons were bitten by dogs, they were given 14 painful injections.

Stray dogs are worrysome. When I was small there were more than there are now. Still, there are more in some neighborhoods than in others. Where I live, the municipality has a sort of shelter for pets. They charge you if you want to get an animal out of them.

I think that people do not know much about dogs, and how to behave around them. And when you expect something bad to happen,it just might happen, because dogs react to the energy that a person projects. So if you are calm and expect the best, you usually get a photos reaction. Also it matters, how the people around you see the dogs and what they tell you about them.So if somebody(parents or friends)tell you that dogs bite and be afraid ,you will. So I can see how many people could be afraid .

when you meet a stray, stay calm( a deep breath helps) and let the dog come to you id he wants and smell you,That is their way of saying hello ! Do not reach for them,,but if they seem tame and you decide to pet, never from above, always from under the chin,or chest. the dogs feel your energy,so they feel if you are nervous, agitated, fearful,That is why is important to stay calm, assertive.Do not expect the worst.

I have never been afraid of anything much. Maybe when we get tornado warnings, I will get a little anxious and I watch the radar. Last week, there was a tornado sighted that was heading straight for my area and I kept a close eye on that. My brother was bitten by a Chow Chow when we were kids and to his dying day, he feared dogs. I was bitten by a big dog once when I was riding a bicycle and he did break the skin but it was mostly just a nip. But I didn't develop a fear like my brother did. I've raised dogs since then and will try to make friends with all kinds. I know some people are fearful of cats. They've listened to the old wives' tales and taken them for gospel. Right now I have a cat and a dog and there is nothing scary about either.

I should say a tornado is way more scary than a dog, any day. Normally you can keep away from a dog, but tornadoes are terrible. Where I live, we must have fences surrounding each house so usually dogs are kept away from other people. THat doesn`t count for cats, though.

I was bitten by a dog when still a kid and had undergone painful anti rabies injections but this did not create fear for dogs. I just avoid being near them particularly if these are somebody else pets that I am not familiar with. Some of these animals are cuddly and friendly and what makes them fearful are their warrior like attitude once they sense aggression.

I am sort of aloof with dogs, most especially the stray ones. I wouldn't want to undergo all those piercing from numerous injections for anti-rabies. But I guess, my fear is just within the normal range. Not really dreading to see a dog coz we have one at home and I pet him a lot whenever I see him lying on my feet.
