When do you comment?

First, I make sure I read the discussion before I try to respond. The title doesn't always fit the writer's post. I keep that in mind. But.... Then I respond. I usually do it before reading the other comments because that makes sure that my thoughts are my own. Then I read the comments and add to what I can or just like what I like. I sometimes get lost in the comments because they make me think or laugh or want to hugs the person because they had a hard time of things. How do you handle responding?

I always read the discussion first, so I know how to respond. If we just respond without reading the discussion, our response may not be relevant to the discussion. It is much easier to respond when I have read the discussion, as I can respond accordingly. I in the past, I have seen responses posted, that didn't pertain to the discussion. It is always best to read the discussion first.

Sometimes I think it is simply misunderstanding the post as well. We have a lot of people from different places that use words in different ways. (Even here in the US ... simple example: Pop, Soda, Soda Pop, Coke..... ) And other times it is because some just assumes they know what it's about by a title or the first few lines. Some people put a question at the end of their posts that isn't really about it in a direct way. I may answer one or the other or both depending on the topic. I'm not sure which the writers prefer but I try to do both.

@TLChimes I had forgot to like posts until now, but now I do hit the like button for discussions as well as comments and responses. I have been asked questions in comments, and I try to answer them as best I can, and if I don't know the answer, I will tell tham that I don't know.

I guess there's no right or wrong way of doing it. It really depends on the individual, For me personally, I may have a firm opinion on something, and not necessarily need to see what someone else has said in order for me to respond.

The same here, normally my first comment would be based on the topic and I don't read other comments for the same reason you mentioned but, later read what others have to say and may be comment on some of them if I feel like !

@TLChimes I guess that seems to be the popular pattern we all follow

It seems that a lot of us do that. I'm happy to know that I'm not alone.

Pretty much the same as you do.. sometimes I read the comments after I have written mine and find someone saying the exact same thing as I did .. which is what I wanted to avoid in the first place..

It happens but I would rather that than a not genuine answer. Besides, unless it is a very short answer, each are going to be unique to the person. We all "speak" a little differently even when we type.

I do the same, I respond first and then I go through the other comments.

I find it the best way to do it so we stay true to our thoughts on the post and not be influenced by others, at least not until later. There have been a few times where I may change my point of view a little based on someone's response. That's when I discuss it with them in their comment.

I pretty much do the same thing. I'm afraid if I start reading the comments, I will forget to comment myself.

Or I may run out of fresh ideas. I love comments but not before I add my own.

...or your answer may be influenced by someone else's answer. This could lead to a different answer to the one you may have given in the first instance, had you not looked at the responses first. Not that there's anything wrong with that approach.

@Lushlala I agree with you. I don't want my answer to be influenced by others comments either.

I'm like you. I read the post, then comment if I feel moved to do so, and then read the other comments. I think you can find some great stuff down in the comments section.

@TLChimes Totally agree. The great thinng about the comment sections is that what you get is pure, rough honesty in all its glory. Maybe not the most intelligent stuff but it is honest. I do enjoy it.

I love comment sections. Not just here but on news stories and other things like that. I think you can laugh, learn, or get feelings (good and bad) from a good comment section

When there aren't any new discussions that I find interesting, I try to check out the comments of interesting people and see where and what they have been up to. If I can add in my two cents, I'll do it.

I will comment after going through the whole topic. If not very hard to guess what the topic is about, Some times header and topic don't match. So very hard to get an idea without reading the whole topic. @TLChimes

I agree. People try to make it fun and interesting from the title but it doesn't always match what their point is.

Yes, that is what I usually do too. I make sure to comment first before going through the other comments - but sometimes I read comments first to check if responses were given already.

For my discussions, you can just answer as you want to because even if you answer like someone else, I think that people have their own "voice" when we type. Your answer will still be different even if it contains the same information. .... unless it is a very short answer, they tend to sound the same.

I scroll through the topics and respond only to what interests me and something I know I'll have something to say about the discussion at hand. I usually respond first and then look at what others have said. Sometimes though, I may glance quickly at other members' comments if I'm not very clear on something, and then comment.

Sounds like a good way to do it. I appreciate the fact that you make sure you are clear on things before you answer... it shows that you care about what you are saying.

I,for one, follow a bit longer process. If the discussion is lengthy,I read it twice and try to make out what the initiator wants to say.I see the comments only when I fail to understand the discussion. It's a time consuming process,I admit.

I often want to respond to the commenters, but I do also try to remember to respond to the OP. I think it's more polite to make sure that you do that.
