If you plan to throw a party, do you know how to get rid of overstaying guests? When it's time to go to bed, and some guests seem not ignore the clock: - Stop to be nice. Remove all the glasses and the bottles. - Stop talking, do not show interest in what they are saying. - Look at your watch making sure your guests notice this. - Yawn and show that your eyes are so tired that cannot stay open. They do not still understand? Go into your bedroom, put on your pajamas, come in the living room, open the front door and show them their way out. Have you ever had guests like this?

I'm afraid I'm very blunt - I will say (with a laugh) ''Time you weren't here!)''

Very good being blunt as some people can't take a hint. @jaboUK

If they are friends I tell them, but when they were clients of my husband I sent messages.

My father-in-law used to say if we go to bed, these people can go home so that it seemed like he was keeping the guests up!! Very effective. lol

A wise man your father in-law is to say that and the people will leave.

@LadyDuck With my kids actually they leave quicker than I would like because usually they have another place to be. But I am glad to come to me on Christmas for whatever time I get.

This is very effective too. Some people seem not to understand when it's time to go.

My way of encouraging guests to leave is to offer them hot chocolate. This seems to work most times and it has become a standing joke with us and our friends.

Oh, I knew one that would accept the chocolate and will find a way to drink it very slowly.

My friends know that we do not like to go to bed too late, but it happened in the past, when we invited clients of my husband, that some of them stayed well too long in the night.

I've never had that problem thank God but if I did I guess I would try all the things on your list. Or say listen I'd love to talk more but I am tired so we'll pick up on this conversation another time thanks for understanding, good nite.

I only happened to me a few times, the guests were not friends, but clients of my husband, so I needed not to be rude, but I was so tired and I really wanted to go to sleep.

@LadyDuck I hear what your saying, that would be difficult with them being your husbands clients. I am certain you were thrilled when they finally left.

@Butchcass4 I was more than happy and I asked to my husband never to invite them again at home, but only outside at a restaurant.

I have not had guests that were not expected. And those guests that we have invited would be left alone to fend for themselves when it's time for me to hit the pillow.

How about asking one of these "special souls" ,,, what o clock is it? instead of looking at your own watch/clock or whatever. I had done that on two occasions.Once was a success and it did the trick. The other instance had me in trouble Things get a bit awry when dealing with drunk guests

It happened that I asked, they replied! When I continue to look at the clock, they understand that for me it's getting too late. I never had drunk guests.

I take guests OUT to dinner and at the end they know it is time to go and the end is when I pay the check and start saying goodnight!

OH yes but I think a more subtle approach would be TATA nice to see you. See you again then never invite them back!

I agree this is what to do. Take note of their names and prepare a "black list".

@Auntylou I am not surprised, my cousin owns a restaurant, he is a chef, he told me that they have a black list, people with noisy kids, those who are always complaining and so on.

@LadyDuck On a slightly different track, my brother used to work in a very popular restaurant. People who didn't tip, were put on an unofficial black list by the staff and were told that there were no tables, if they phoned to book!

I sometimes have trouble getting one of my friends to stop and have left her on the sofa with the TV and gone off to bed.

When I was a young married woman and very pregnant, we had friends come and visit for the day. They stayed and stayed and stayed. You know how tired pregnant women get, I finally went to bed. My husband said I was rude, but I could not keep my eyes open! Benjamin Franklin once said, 'Fish and company stink after three days'!

If they are friends, I have no problem to tell them, but sometimes my husband invited his clients or colleagues, there it came the problem.

When the guests are friends or family, I tell them that it's time to go. When I had more official parties with colleagues and clients of my husband, I could do nothing else than "send signals".

I am a blunt as @jabo - it is quite rude when visitors overstay their welcome. I always say, arrive on time, but leave before the light gets dim and remember to listen for the cue - Time to Go Home!

We don't do parties, but we do have a few folks that stop over from time to time. One in particular stays for hours at a time, and I mean hours. I've learned that it's best not to invite a person inside if I have things I want to get done even if I have the day off. Thursday an old friend, a different one, stopped by with a gift for us, out of the blue. We'd not seen this individual for several years and of course we invited them in. I left the room after visiting for a while and went back to my computer leaving my husband to visit more. Eventually the person left on their own. I've actually told certain people that we needed to get to bed soon and that will usually help them along. One person used to stay over six hours when we weren't working before leaving. Yikes!

Some of the clients of my husband stayed too long and I could say nothing, just because they were clients and I did not want to offend them.

I've had a couple staying past than what was planned and I finally got up removing food, drinks, turning off music and they still sat. I finally said, "it was nice to see you but I need rest now. Be safe driving." They got the hint. I need to be more blunt from the get go.

Sometimes showing it's not enough, you really have to tell them.
