A Tiger for a pet.

I have just watched a lady on the TV rolling around on the ground with her pet tiger. She said she would take a bullet for it and her life revolves around this tiger. Another person was interviewed who breeds, trains and sells tigers. He makes a great deal of money out of his animals, one particular enterprise was to charge people for the pleasure of swimming with one.
I have no experience of big cats, but I do have some knowledge of the small 'domesticated' ones. If you have ever had a kitten mistake your leg for a tree trunk and scale it with claws fully extended you would know that even tiny kittens have claws like needles. Big ones must have claws like knives.
If that tiger decided to treat his 'mistress' to a playful swipe she would learn the hard way never to roll around on the ground with him again. I would have problems swimming with dolphins and nothing would induce me to swim with a tiger, particularly this one which was quite young and very reluctant to even take to the water.
I am sure there are laws to protect animals but also loopholes through which people can obtain them not just for their own image but also to make money through them. A wild animal is not a pet.. Laws should be tightened up to protect them.

This is a good law regarding wild animals. Cats are a little different since they are never really owned nor are they caged - except for the so called 'indoor cats' and of course I do not agree that any cat by nature would choose to be kept inside a house all its life. Cat rarely scratch unless they are teased so we can avoid a normal cat from attacking us, although I grant there are exceptions which I think is due to bad experiences.

Agree with you. Some people thought a big pet is a symbol of status or made them cool. But the big pet also is very dangerous. Do you heard about the Tibetan mastiff? It is one type of dog in China and very very expensive, but it is very huge and also dangerous. I heard some news about the Tibetan mastiff hurt the people, even killed a three years old little girl. I think if someone want a big pet, you can. But please watch over your pet, maybe it is only a pet in your eyes, but it also is a killer to other people.

I suppose the idea behind the image is that if a man can cope with a tiger as a pet he can cope with anyone who might be an enemy. I dislike all this macho stuff.

@ivyparkgirl It is illegal .What we can do here is adopt one and keep it in the zoo and pay its expenses.

There is a difference between wild animals and the ones which can be kept as pet. These wild creatures even if kept with care can cause unintentional harm. I believe these should be kept protected in wild life parks where these creatures can better grow with nature and be safe.

Unfortunately some of these species, such as white tigers, can only be kept in parks but they have to be an exception to the rule. Wild animals need to roam and lead a normal life.

@41combedaleroad Wild animals were surely never meant to be kept this way or used as status symbols. And why should I be put at risk if a neighbour choses to keep one and it escapes? This really is little more than vanity with little care or respect for the animals.

I completely agree with what you say. It is bad enough here in Greece trying to sleep with all the dogs barking at night because they have been abandoned by their owners. Imagine if it were lions roaring!

I now people do raise these animals for movies and it is common in some places to be around them all the time. But in the end it can also be dangerous because they are still wild animals. dogs and cats can be dangerous as well but they are a small breed of animal than large hunting animals like this. It has got to cost a fortune to feed an animals such as this. They have to eat raw meat and if you don't feed them I am sure they will go and hunt for themselves.

Even if cats are well fed they cannot resist going for prey. It is only mice and an occasional bird which is deposited on my doorstep but even so it is a reminder that the tiniest claws can kill.

@41CombedaleRoad You are so right on that one. I don't think I would want to be like a lot of these people who have wild animals as pets. A friend of my daughters rescues wolves and other animals that come near the city. She has 4 wolf cubs in her home. I would not really want this one. I know they are like a dog but this is not the same. Her neighbors complain all the time. She has a special animal run set up in her yard to keep them inside. I think she uses some of the same material and stuff they use at zoos. But still if one gets out it could be dangerous.

One of my cats sleeps with me when she feels like it and she snores and she occupies more than her fair share of the bed. Sleeping with a lion would not be an option, warm maybe but safe - definitely not!

There are laws to protect animals but also loopholes, yet the law in India do not allow any wild animal of Indian origin as a pet. However with this loophole we can have a pet wild animal which is not Indian origin. Yet it is not easy to bring International wild animal in Indian home.

It is not a good idea to have wild animals as pets. So much can go wrong.

You have probably read some horrendous tales of snakes appearing in toilet basins. Several months ago there was a story about a crocodile which someone had owned, got tired of and let it go near to a lake. Last I heard they were still trying without any success to capture it.

@41CombedaleRoad Yes, I have heard of snakes appearing in toilet basins, this is the reason why I always keep the basin closed.

Not only a swipe with those knife like claws but I'd be afraid of a big bite with those huge teeth.

My imagination would not go down the path of looking into the lion's teeth. Dog's teeth are scary enough.

You can't domesticate a wild animal. I find having a pet such as a tiger crazyness. I hope all goes well for this lady but I certainly have my doubts.
