Brussel Sprouts - Anyone knows what I should do with it!

I've made a terrible mistake! I've bought something I shouldn't have done. Brussel sprouts! Ok, they were on sale and I thought why not! But then hey, there's probably a darn good reason why they were on sale in the first place. So now I am stuck with this abomination of a vegetable! Too wasteful to chuck it away, too not happening to eat. Anyone has any clue what I should do with it? Thanks thanks!

The reason why most people hate Brussels sprouts is that they remember them as soggy, slimy, yellowish things vastly over-cooked and thoroughly disgusting, which. moreover, they were made to eat as a child. In fact, they are one of the nicer ways of eating any cabbage vegetable, when done properly. I suspect that the lot you bought were cheap because they had been on the shelves too long and also because the Christmas season is over. They will doubtless look a little worse for wear but that is no problem. Just cut a bit from the stem and discard the tired outer leaves. The inner part of the bud should be as good as new. There are two main methods of cooking them to bring out the sweet nuttiness of them at its best. The first is to boil or steam them. I prefer steaming because they absorb less water and the vitamins and minerals are better preserved. Either way, they should be cooked for no longer than 7 to 10 minutes. I generally give them less than that (I'm afraid that @topffer's 15 to 20 minutes on top of 5 minutes blanching is FAR too long!). They should go into lightly salted water at a rolling boil or be put into the steamer when the water beneath is boiling well and the steam has as much heat as possible. The second way I like to do them is sliced (at 90 degrees to the stem) and stir fried in a little toasted sesame oil with a clove of garlic and about 1 cm of stem ginger minced. Sprinkle with soy sauce and serve immediately. Done this way, they will need 2 minutes or less. I guarantee that the most inveterate sprout hater will love them done like this! Since you are from Ireland, what about colcannon? I know this is usually made with cabbage or kale but it's just as good with Brussels sprouts. Follow the stir fry method but maybe use bacon fat and omit the ginger and soy sauce and then blend them into mashed potato.

I should have added that they are good when you can easily put a fork in them. 10 minutes is good enough in a pressure cooker, not in a pan.

I happen to love them! Put on a baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil, sea salt and fresh ground pepper. Bake in high oven, 450 for abut 20 minutes..check them. Baking veggies gives them a nutty flavor.

It's amazing to hear the word "nutty" associated with the sprouts, but sure am willing to give anything a go at this point!

They are yummy and i love them, you can boil them, steam them, roast them. To cook them take some of the out leaves off, maybe cut a bit off at the base/stork, some say to "X" them at the base/stork to cook them better.

Lol, you need to blanch them first to make them digestible : put them 5 mn in boiling water ! Drop the water, and cook them 15/20 mn in salted water. Finally, you fry them in a pan with butter or olive oil and 1 chopped onion or 2 chopped scallions, and some pieces of bacon. It is the basis : you can add garlic, pepper, a bit of fresh cream... Not my favorite vegetable, but it is not bad.

You can steam these and eat them with butter. You can fix them with bacon or in a casserole. You should goggle for some good recipes.

I found that just cutting some up and throwing them into a salad works. I actually enjoy eating them with an apple an avocado and some tangerines. I like them best uncooked. You can throw some into a smoothie. They are very nutritious. Of course you can cook them and make a favorite sauce. You just have to experiment until you find them enjoyable and if you don't, well you will know never to buy them again. You can also do a search and find some recipes. You can also give them away to someone that likes them. I actually like them in many ways, but that's me!

Take your sprouts and slice them in half the long way from top to base. Then steam them when they are done. Pull out a frying pan throw in a little butter and raw smashed Garlic cloves. Smash them using the bottom of the frying pan. You just want them to burst open so when you cook them in the butter it flavors it. Cook the garlic til its browned remove them if you don't like garlic, Throw in your sprouts and let them get caramelized in the garlic butter. Add salt&pepper to taste. When they are browned serve them on a plate with maybe some mashed potatoes, gravy and steak or your choice of meat. I hope this dish idea helps.

@Drosophila Garlic is wonderful in being able to mask bitterness and make it pleasant to ones taste buds. My wife loves sprouts the rest of us can eat a few if they are done with the butter garlic saute. My son first saw them he said oh this is so cool i got baby lettuces on my plate until he bit into it then he said hey you tricked me what is this? This isn't lettuce I know its not! it was quite funny.

I do like garlic, I can see how something strong like garlic butter could really do wonders to the bitter taste. When I first got them, I just boiled them a bit and try to eat it with salt 'n' pepper.. so not happening

I recently heard that they are delicious rousted. THey are also good raw in salads, but you would want to slice them fairly thin. They are good steamed with a bit of melted cheese over the top. I'm the only one in my family that will try eating them. I buy a chopped salad that contains them. I was surprised they are soo good this way being raw and all.
