Adult Coloring Books

I was looking for some art type projects to add to my Getting Out of Here Fund, and received an awesome suggestion of doing an adult coloring book. Seriously, this is a truly cool idea and right up my alley. I'm doing some research and thinking about what kind of book to do, and ideas are already popping up in my head. I will probably start with a dragon coloring book because that's a subject I draw frequently anyway. If you like to color, what are some subjects you'd like to see more of? I'm looking for niche markets that aren't already packed to the scuppers with books. For example, I had the idea to do one about horses, but I know there are already a million of those. Thoughts?

@Rohvannyn I think that is a wonderful idea. I love adult coloring books. I would love to see one that reflects the Victorian age. I guess like the old time Victorian Valentines.

oooo, do the Valentines. Lots of adults and children would enjoy colouring their own Valentines.

@paigea I thought it was a good idea. The Valentines from those days were so romantic.

I have a lot of adult coloring books and they have almost every subject. I think the more complex the better as some like to frame and hang their work as art. I see subjects like horses, wishing wells, butterflies and more. How about one with the seven natural wonders and another with different countries natural wonders?

there are some great series out there, I am thinking of games for example, I know it's HARD to find good anything with images from Final Fantasy, or of the Mercedes Lackey series Valdemar (you could work in horses there with their companions)

@Rohvannyn well fan art is ok, and I see people selling fan art on etsy all the time. I dont see how this is much different really. Especially if you make up scenes and stuff.

Oh, that would be amazing. I think I'd have to get permission to do it though. I'd love to do a Final Fantasy 1 coloring book especially.

I grew to like coloring from working with kids. I don't mind coloring kid stuff. How about nature scenes?

@paigea That's when I enjoy it the most too. I can say I'm "modeling good focus and concentration" for the kids. But really I'm just having fun.

Dragons sounds like one that wouldn't already be saturated. I have only glanced at these books, but I notice some include quotes. For example zen colouring books have corresponding zen like quotes. I am sure there must be dragon related quotes. I bought my grandson what I thought was a colouring book. It was actually a set of about 8 posters. They were on heavier paper. They were all fish and after colouring he could bend up part of each fish for a 3D effect. There was still a layer of paper under the folder up part, the part that folded up was scored for folding. It seems to me it would be a good variation to your adult colouring books too. The name brand of that set is Melissa and Doug

I know it sounds lame but when you said do one with dragon quotes my first thought was the one I saw before, "be kind to dragons as thou are crunchy and taste good with ketchup."

@paigea I like the dragon idea. They would be great colored in metallic pencils.

I would go with what you enjoy best, where I may like flowers on the patio you wont. I do call myself an artist so I am not sure I want to color, maybe paint though.

I am not very interested in coloring books, I like to paint for my own painting. I ever browse these adult coloring books and I must say that they look very complicated. But after finishing it, it looks so great. I ever saw that some of these color books can be a cartoon story. It is a nice idea because you may even use them as your own books and tell the stories for your kids.

The first adult coloring book I bought was the colorama one. I love the various designs in it, and what I like about it, as is I can use colored pencils, markers or gel pens. Cryahons won't work on them, but that is okay as I do have couple of kids coloring books that I can use them on. I am in my sixties and coloring.

Well I haven't seen many Christian ones out there, with crosses and such in it. Maybe that is an idea?

It seems people find colouring books therapeuitic. I would not, but my daughter loves them. Dragons would be fun to draw anc so I say, "go for it."

Sometimes, it's good to be back to the things you usually do during your childhood days. Only if those things are still worth doing now in your adult life. Coloring is one of them and it will not vanished forever. Hearing of adult coloring book is new to me. I'm now thinking that the things the person is coloring is now more complicated and the coloring technique is much more realistic than brushing up and down only
