Sniffling, aching, cracking, popping, hurting, sleeping, coughing ...
This has been my world for the last two days. I'm currently curled up in bed with a sleeping cat snuggling up to me. The last two days have seen me venture into the dark world, spreading my horrible germs amongst bus passengers, students and friends, and this morning I thought, No! Not again! I shan't drag myself into work feeling so poorly. I deserve a day in which I can relax and recover. So I prepped myself, took a deep breath and rang up the administration office at work, leaving a message. To be on the safe side I also emailed my line manager, the teaching staff I work with and a friend in my department. Then I tootled off to bed, sleeping for four solid hours and dreaming of the most daft things.
My absence record, when compared to other people's, is virtually unblemished. I {perhaps stupidly} have a fear of being off work. I don't like missing the gossip, the chatter, the students I work with, the lessons I'll have to catch up on, etc. Deep down I think this stems from many moons ago when I was teaching and had a lot of sick days, which eventually culminated in me being signed off work for four months with depression. Now, even when I'm genuinely poorly, I feel guilt for taking time off; it makes me think I'm going to go through the whole rigmarole of those teaching days.
I sometimes wish I had never grown up.
And the boiler is broken. The pilot light keeps going out. I need to contact British Gas and get them out to look at it, but I just don't want to. Not right now. I think I should sleep right now.
*small smile*

@Poppylicious This is a wrong attitude, they should encourage sick people to stay at home.

I know, but management can get quite uppity and I've seen the way I'll staff and students get treated. It's demoralising and sad.

@LadyDuck I know that, and you know that, but superior people don't seem to understand it!

I tend to feel a little sorry for y our colleagues, they have to put up with you being miserable and risk catching your germs and becoming miserable themselves. Hopefully you do not get sick very often!

@41CombedaleRoad I don't get sick often at all. I'm quite lucky. However, I work in education and it's a huge place. There are always ill students and staff around! Besides, I'm miserable when I feel well, so no one can tell the difference with me!

My sentiments precisely. Hence my nearly unblemished absence record. I just didn't have the energy to even think about getting ready to go out today.

I do get paid sick leave, thankfully. If I didn't I would be sure to never be ill.

@Poppylicious They were probably warned to stay out of sight as 'Snow White and the 9 Dwarfs' just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Well, I'm always Grumpy so there was no point in adding that. Poorly and Personal were the shy ones who hid from Snow White. Do you know nothing?!

It's daft that we feel we have to go to work so as not to let anyone else down. We end up letting ourselves down. :(

Get lots of rest. I am like you and when I worked I often worked even when feeling bad. It was a mistake. No one appreciated me any more than if I had taken the day off when I needed it.

The last job I worked I took one day off in a year because I had a seizure. I felt so guilty about taking it off and I wanted to go into work but my family would not allow me to since they were caring for me that day. So, I understand your feelings on that one. But I also know when we are not feeling our greatest we really aren't doing anyone any favors by showing up in that condition.

If you are infectious I really think you should either stay at home or go to work wearing a mask if for some reason you have got to be there. Sleep is the cure for your problems, it helps you get better, it closes down your concerns and bed is a warm place to be if you have boiler problems. Have a hot drink and an asprin and nurse yourself well again.

Get well soon. Being sick is definately not a nice feeling. You did well by calling in sick so you can get some well deserved rest. Sometimes when we not feeling well the body is just sending signals that its exhausted and wants to rest to regain strength. Take care.

I think you're probably right ... those four hours extra sleep after I crawled back into bed would suggest so!
