Every time I go to my computer now, all the news about the lottery jumps out at me. It is up to 900 million!! imagine that. My son got so mad at me for bugging him to go get me more tickets yesterday. He has dreams. Why should I not? What would you do with it? I would get a no kill animal shelter and a home for so many homeless families. Put 2 of my kids in a rehab before they got a penny. Give my oldest daughter 1 million and say don't ever bother me again! Same with this son here that has made me miserable lately. My youngest daughter would have to live with me. lol. But of course in comfort. she has always been there for me when she was able to. Yes basically I would give most of it away I guess maybe that's why I never win. Guess what? I have now caught the awful cold or whatever it is that my son brought home. That on top of everything else has made me even more miserable. sorry this is so long.

I am sure we could all use it! I would buy a home for my family since we have never owned a home before, I would buy a mini van since we will have 4 children soon, I would definitely help some homeless families since I absolutely know how it feels to be without a home, and I would open the daycare I have always wanted to have! =) Oh and I would visit many of my friends from MyLot and help out those of us who need it. I know plenty of us need the money.

Nine hundred million dollars would instantly make me richer than Paul McCartney, so I could hire him to play my birthday party! I would honestly rather play the $15 million game than a $900 million game, for several reasons. 1. What if 20-30 people hit the winning numbers? A CNN article says that the cash payout would only be about $550 million, and at least half of that is going to taxes, bringing it down to $275 million. If 20 people win (either "pools" or multiple numbers) that means that the "$900 million" is more like $13,750,000. 2. When it's this big there's going to be news coverage over who wins it. When you snag the $15 million, who cares? You're not being interviewed on Fox News when you win a comparatively "piddly" sum of money. 3. The more you have the more you spend, and that means you "go through" the money, leaving you with the millionaire toys...but no money to pay the outlandish annual taxes on your mansion, Mercedes, and mega yacht. (Fun fact: many lottery winners end up broke within five years of winning.) 4. $900 million carries with it about 900 million headaches. You have "friends" you never knew you had, the aforementioned tax man (who, I need to repeat, comes around annually and not just once, thanks to interest on the money, taxing the luxuries purchased, etc.), and whatnot. There's a terrific early episode of Night Court where a million-dollar lottery ticket holder asked Harry to find someone deserving of the money, and the court turned into a circus (complete with someone dressed up like the Elephant Man ). Nah, I'd rather have the $15 million. But yes, it is nice to dream!

@ivyparkgirl so are you saying you would rather live on a little then get rich? or does the waiver give you a lot? Not sure I know what waiver is?

This is why the first thing a big winner or even a comparatively small winner should do is visit a lawyer and an accountant BEFORE turning in the winning ticket.

Hope you feel better - we are just getting over all our bugs! I would love to win all that moola, but then I wonder how it "really" would be to be the winner (yesterday Hubby found a website that shows the unluckiness of past winners).

@RichardMeister Exactly. They blow their winnings. And some have relatives or friends who get too envious and end up attacking them in one way or another!

@much2say That's one of the reason I would try my best to not let anyone know I won the big bucks. There was a woman in Idaho who won a lottery a few years ago. She was separated from her husband (who at the time was in jail). She had planned to divorce him but just never gotten around to it. Anyway, her husband demanded half the money since they were still married. The last I heard they were headed to court. But I think he got half. (If you are planning to play the lottery and you are planning to divorce your husband, you had better divorce your husband first!)

Most people who with lotteries are broke within 5 to 7 years. They never stop to think they may someday run out of money.

People who win such a large amount of money should immediately create a tax shelter or move to a tax free country.

@LadyDuck In a high cost of living country you will still have to work. I think the advantage of living in a lower cost of living countries is health care. Medical treatments that were highly priced rich countries will be more affordable. I can have anti-cancer stem cell treatment for upper class people for a cheaper price in a low cost of living country. I can only have a Millionaire lifestyle in an Eu country but I can live a Billionaire lifestyle in Uruguay or Thailand.

I heard Liechtenstein have low tax but have a high cost of living. Moving to a 3rd world country with no wars and have low crime rate is also a good option.

@CaptAlbertWhisker If you win a lot of money who cares about the cost of living. Monte-Carlo is free of taxes, but of course the housing is very expensive.

After I secure the money I will immediately set up trust funds for all my kids, grand kids, nieces and nephews. To be used for their education and advancement in life. After that I will take care of our more immediate needs including securing affordable housing for those in need of such. Somewhere down the road there would be a huge family vacation. During all this time I will be on the lookout for ways to improve the lives of others in our community.

Now here in S outhern C alif homeless can o nly stay one week in a sheler so ha is no really much help.

@Hatley I agree and also know what it's like being homeless. Helping the community is HIGH on my list of things to do. But I don't want to just throw money at the problems, I want to use the money to help solve the problems.

It wasn't long. So sorry you have a cold. It seems like a lot of fellow Mylotters are getting it. My daughter and grandson has it too. Hope I don't get it. If I won the lottery I would go to Mackinac Island and stay at the Grand Hotel for as long as I like. I would travel to ireland, Britain, Scotland,France, and anywhere else I wanted to. I'd come home and buy a house out away from a lot of people. Then start a home for animals and have my daughter run it. I would have fun decorating the home. I would have a cook that cooked what I wanted to eat which is a lot of fish and vegetables. It would be nice.

I do not do the lottery or think too much about being rich. There are so many good causes I would be spoiled for choice. However I do not like window shopping and the lottery is a bit like that.

I've found it very interesting that everyone I've talked to, or every post I've read about winning the lottery, the people mention three things consistently: taking care of the homeless, taking care of our veterans, and taking care of animals. Very, very consistent. If these three things seem to be the will of the people, then why can't our boneheaded government listen to us and put more money into these areas? It's a shame that our homeless, veterans, and animals are treated so badly in this country. Well, not necessarily treated badly, just ignored and forgotten.

I heard on the TV that you are more likely to get struck by lightning while you where drowning than you are to win the lottery. Another one I heard was you were more likely to be struck by lightning while wearing a monkey suit riding a donkey. With that said, the first thing I'd do is pay off my mortgage. Then I'd give a chunk of it to charity (such as St. Jude Hospital). Then I would kick back and enjoy the rest of my life. If at all possible I would not tell a soul I won the money so no one would be bugging and begging me for money.

I know we could sure use it. Like you, I'd want to donate to charities and such. I'd want to save some as well, put some aside for my kids, give some to some really good friends and family, maybe travel. I'd pay off my student debt, along with my husband's. It'd be nice to get, but the chances of winning the lottery is small. I don't think I'll ever win it, but I can dream.

I would build a beautiful home for my family in the countryside. Donate some to charity. I would help out my extended family who are struggling and invest a large chunk of the cash too. Then I would fulfill my dream of travelling the world.
