pineapples were originally south american.cultivated by the aztecs and the mayans.when european came there ,they loved it and started to transport it to europe .initially due to lack of proper transport system pineapples used to cost 1000 time what their cost was.The rich Europeans started to like it instantly.
But with advent of proper transport and local cultivation in europe they became cheaper and with that it's consumption decreased amongst the rich europen.
Why did it happen did the taste of pineapple changed or was it just because it became cheaper. in reality pineapple consumption was a sign of royalty in society
and since it became cheaper it's consumption gradually declined among rich.
Poor pineapples became victim of human nature

Some people I guess do not want to be seen eating cheap food which should not be the case, we eat food to reap the benefits of what mother nature has to offer. Pineapple is very popular in the Philippines, Del Monte has a pineapple plantation in the Southern Philippines

I love pineapple and they are great in an Hawaiian pizza. I wasn't aware that the flavour had changed, certainly not noticeably so in my lifetime.

@karlmarxx I thought you asked if the taste had changed?
Yeah, I guess most (what we call "exotic fruits") would have been beyond the financial reaches of most Europeans at one time. It seems that now we can have any fruit we want for a small price.
