Eat less to live longer

Many old people in my country subscribe to a concept that mirrors the eat less to live longer concept. The old people say that everyone has a food quota. When you use up the food quota, you will die. They believe that heaven has destined the total amount of food that you can eat in this lifetime. That means you should eat less everyday so that you can live longer. This seems to mirror the medical concept that says that you have to eat less to live longer. Eating less does not mean you need to deprive yourself of food. The concept behind eating less is to eat well. You have to eat good food, but not in huge quantity. Perhaps the concept is to eat less, eat well, and live long

I think it should be eat well and live longer. It depends on the food we eat that helps us maintain a good or better life.

That is true. I notice that when a person eats less, he tends to eat well. Since he sets a limit to food quota, he will cut down on junk food. it is the same for those with weight problem. They will eat more vegetables, fruits, and practically cut off all sugared products.

@scheng1 A fat person can eat all the vegetables and fruits you want to give then and will still have 'room' for a chocolate bar and/or a piece of cake.

This reflects a problem that the US has with obesity. A large number of the population here is obese from eating, not only too much, but bad food too!

That is partly due to the deterioration of traditional values. When families do not eat home cooked food at home, you will have this kind of trouble. In Singapore context, some families have this problem too. The whole family is getting obese, and the medical bills add up.

@sgbrown Medical care will cost a lot more in the future. Many people are still eating their way to destroy their health completely.

@scheng1 I agree about traditional values deteriorating. Too many people are not cooking good meals for their families and eating junk food. Being over weight causes so many health problems and the cost of medical care is so high!

Eating more but healthy kind of choice is fine. Just make sure you are not eating too much since too much of something whether it's good food or not, is always bad.

That is true. I know someone who lands in hospital with gastric problem because she takes too many oranges every day. The acid from the oranges burn through her stomach lining.

I am 80 years old not eating less--why should I stop now? I like how I live, including the way I eat, to live another year or two!

That is good to hear. I hope that you are active enough to burn the calories, and to keep fit. I have seen people in their 70s run marathon. They are much fitter than the younger ones, and they do eat a lot more.

Unprocessed food tend to make us feel full more than processed food. We will not feel sleepy in the afternoon too.

This just shows that you are very young. You probably have not met with people who are over 90 years old. I have at least one of these old people as my relative.

I also heard about it. In fact in China we also have the similar saying. We shall eat less and also wear less. In Japan they also don't eat much and their lives are long and healthy. Eating less will avoid many diseases.

It is not a medical condition that makes them eat less. They do less physically, so they eat less. Some of them do not eat fatty food or those food with high cholesterol. It is not a medical condition, but a health precaution.

Some older ones take the other extreme. They eat too little, and they are not getting enough nutrients they need for daily activities and to maintain their health.
